woman on laptopIn December, Social Security will launch a new service for my Social Security account holders where the public can check on the status of an application for benefits or an appeal filed with us.

The service will provide detailed information about retirement, disability, survivors, Medicare, and Supplemental Security Income claims and appeals filed either online on our website or with a Social Security employee.

The ability to check your application status will be available online to everyone who has or opens a secure personal my Social Security account. You can open an account on our website.

The service will provide important information about your claim or appeal, including, as appropriate:

  • Date of filing.
  • Current claim location.
  • Scheduled hearing date and time.
  • Incomplete applications.
  • Servicing office location.
  • Claim or appeal decision.

If you are unable to open a personal my Social Security account, you can still call 1-800-772-1213 to check your claim status by using our automated system using the confirmation number you received when you filed your claim.

Providing our customers with more claim status information helps us meet our goal of delivering innovative, quality services to you and helping secure today and tomorrow.

I have a case # and SSN is listed as claim number but the system can not access my claim. The SSI was denied in 30 days but I am now receiving the following
    : Benefit Application Under Review

A medical decision has been made and we are working to process your benefit application. A Social Security Representative may contact you directly if we need any additional documents or information.

I filed a Survivors Benefit Appeal almost a year ago, and there is no where on My Social Security to check the status of an appeal. You guys need to change this as there is no where on this site to check claim status.
    Thank you

My case decision has gone to unassigned writing and assigned writing and its still not showing up on my social security account online. How often do you all update these pages?

  6. Carole A.

This has happened repeatedly over the years, every time we needed to talk to someone re: letters, changes, etc. We even had to contact our congressman a couple of times just to get a response from our local SSA office. Does anyone else have this problem? Many changes need to be made if SSA is going to be effective in helping people do the things they are required to do by SSA, like contacting those who want to report changes so they don’t get into trouble & loose or have to pay back benefits that they legitimately qualified for.

.I am representative payee for my son, and we have been trying to get in contact with someone to report changes in employment/income, to no avail. Contacted 800 number over a week ago, was told a message was sent to local SSA office; have not heard anything! Also, how can we get on the “call back” SSA used to have instead of waiting an hour or more?? SO FRUSTRATED! How do we report changes if we cannot contact anyone, and no one calls back???

    • R.F.

Hello Carole, we appreciate your concern. if your son is receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, is important that you report changes on your wages or income, as it could affect his SSI payments.
The message that our telephone service representative sent to the local office is proof that you contacted us to report the change. However, we may need to ask you specific questions about these changes. Please contact your local Social Security office for a follow up. We recommend that you bring with you the most recent pay-stubs or any other document that reflects the change in your wages/income. Thanks!

I AM TRYING TO RECTIFY AN ERROR IN MY ACCOUNT AND HAVE SENT ALL INFORMATION REQUESTED….WE RECEIVED AN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF THE CORRECTED AMOUNTS FOR BOTH MY WIFE AND MYSELF…. SOME TIME LATER I RECEIVED A LETTER CONCERNING OVERPAYMENTS TO ME. I AM TOTALLY CONFUSED AT THIS POINT. THANK YOU

    • R.F.

We wish we could be more help Eugene, but for security reasons we do not have access to personal records in this blog. Your local office will be able to assist you in explaining the letter or the overpayment issue.
If you’re unable to visit the local office, you should call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213. Representatives are available between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday but you will generally have a shorter wait time if you call later during the day or later in the week.
For more information and to learn about appeals and waiver rights, read our publication on “Overpayments“.
Just a reminder – Please be cautious about posting personal information on social media channels. Thanks.

I sent online an appeal on 12/19/2017 and when I finished it I received a message confirming that it was successfully submitted (I printed it)
I created my social security account, before to send my appeal (Appeal is related to the amount approved for benefits).
As of this date in my SS account there is not any information about my appeal. I have contacted SS twice and the first time I was explained that I need to wait and the second time I was explained that there is not any appeal in the system related to my SS number..

I received your e-mail dated 2017-12-26 my Social Security application online. I hope I just applied for Medicare benefits and not Social Security retirement benefits. Just wanted to make sure. Thanks – wayne

    • R.F.

Hi Wayne, your receipt includes a confirmation number you can use to check the status of your application. Or, you can call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213 and speak to one of our agents. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Thanks!
