woman on laptopIn December, Social Security will launch a new service for my Social Security account holders where the public can check on the status of an application for benefits or an appeal filed with us.

The service will provide detailed information about retirement, disability, survivors, Medicare, and Supplemental Security Income claims and appeals filed either online on our website or with a Social Security employee.

The ability to check your application status will be available online to everyone who has or opens a secure personal my Social Security account. You can open an account on our website.

The service will provide important information about your claim or appeal, including, as appropriate:

  • Date of filing.
  • Current claim location.
  • Scheduled hearing date and time.
  • Incomplete applications.
  • Servicing office location.
  • Claim or appeal decision.

If you are unable to open a personal my Social Security account, you can still call 1-800-772-1213 to check your claim status by using our automated system using the confirmation number you received when you filed your claim.

Providing our customers with more claim status information helps us meet our goal of delivering innovative, quality services to you and helping secure today and tomorrow.

I filed a request for reconsideration appeal in March and April. To date I have received no communication from Social Security. What does a person have to do to hear back in a timely manner?

    • Deborah B.

      so sad! Sorry . Unbelievable.
Ive been trying over a year…

    • Ray F.

Hello Billie, Typically, the length of time it takes to receive a decision on your reconsideration is about 60 to 90 days but the amount of time could vary from case-to-case. We reevaluate all evidence, plus any additional evidence submitted and make a new decision.
To follow up or if you have questions about your reconsideration, please call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask to speak with one of our agents. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Generally, you’ll have a shorter wait time if you call later during the day or later in the week. We hope this helps!

I cant find where to input my confirmation number to “check your claim status”. I went to http://www.socialsecurity.gov/applyforbenefits and there was no option to “check your claim status”. I have already applied for benefits and application was being processed as of 5/21/2018.

Just wanted to know how my appiaction for SSD is going?

  9. Julie H.

Why can’t I check the status of my claim if this is suppose to be available on line on your site? I guess this service is not working like everything else with social security. Very frustrating. Social security has the public at its mercy because there is no one to file a complaint with! Very sad!

I need help with a local social security office. There is a problem on my wage report that needs corrected and the local field office is either to busy or does not care to even return my phone calls. I have been working on this for 3 months. Where can I go for help?

    • Ray F.

Hello Catherine. Unfortunately, but for security reasons, we do not have access to personal records in this blog. When working with your local office, you can request to speak with the manager to see how we can help to expedite resolution of your situation. If you are unable to visit the local office, you can call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213, representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Generally, you will have a shorter wait time if you call later in the week.
To submit your comment, complaint or suggestion, you can write to us or send us an email message. Thanks.
