person reviewing information onlineIf you receive Social Security benefits, the easiest way to change your address and phone number is by creating a personal my Social Security account. Once you create your account, you can update your contact information from your preferred location. This feature is available for people who receive retirement, survivors, or disability benefits, along with Medicare enrollees. If you receive Supplemental Security Income, you can check the address that we have on record with your account.

Visit our my Social Security webpage to get started. To create an account, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Provide a valid email address.
  • Have a Social Security number (SSN).
  • Provide a U.S. mailing address (includes military addresses, APO/FPO/DPO, AE, AP, or AA).

Once you have a valid email address, you are ready to create your personal my Social Security account. When you visit my Social Security, select the “Create an Account” button. You will have the option to create your new my Social Security account with one of our two credential partners: Login.gov or ID.me.

  • Login.gov is the public’s one account for simple, secure, and private access to participating U.S. government agencies.
  • ID.me is a single sign-on provider that meets the U.S. government’s online identity proofing and authentication requirements.

Please note, if you already have a Login.gov or ID.me account, you can select the appropriate button to sign in with either one and access your personal my Social Security account. If you previously verified your identity with Login.gov or ID.me, you don’t need to do so again. If you don’t have a Login.gov or ID.me account, please select the “Create an Account” link to start the one-time registration process.

If you create a new Login.gov credential, we will still complete the identity verification part, so you will need to provide some personal information to us. You will also receive an activation code from us to complete the process.

Remember, you can do much of your business with us online.

  5. Scott S.

    Hello,
How do I change my mothers mailing address? She is incapacitated and can’t create an account and email.
Her new address is an assisted living home.

    Thank you,

    • Ann C.

Hi, Scott. Thanks for your question.  If your mother needs help managing her benefits, you may be interested in applying to become her representative payee. As a representative payee, you will have access to your mother’s records and the ability to update her account information.

Typically, a face-to-face interview is required when applying to be someone’s representative payee. If your family member cannot be present, a statement from their doctor would be helpful. The statement should say that they are not able to -mentally and physically- manage their Social Security benefits and identify you as the person responsible to keep their finances in order. Please note that having a “Power of Attorney” does not give you legal authority to manage payments for someone receiving Social Security or SSI benefits.

Please read our publication, A Guide For Representative Payees,  for more information. If you have specific questions, or to make an appointment with the local Social Security office, please call us at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., for assistance. You can also contact your local Social Security office. We hope this helps.

Hi, Roberto. We’re sorry for any inconvenience. You will need a U.S. address to access your personal my Social Security account. Since you are living outside of the U.S., please contact your local  Federal Benefits Unit for any assistance related to Social Security benefits. Also, our Office of International Operations home page provides more information to assist our customers living abroad. We hope this helps.

  10. Peggy

How do you change the address for a parent who is now suffering from Parkinson’s related dementia? Obviously, my Mom does not remember her previous login info and is now living in a memory care home. Can I just mail in a form? All of these 3rd party gatekeepers like id.me and login.gov are a hardship and unethical barrier put against many elderly Americans. I urge everyone to contact their Congress person to do away with this disrespectful and discriminatory nonsense.

    • Ann C.
