person reviewing information onlineIf you receive Social Security benefits, the easiest way to change your address and phone number is by creating a personal my Social Security account. Once you create your account, you can update your contact information from your preferred location. This feature is available for people who receive retirement, survivors, or disability benefits, along with Medicare enrollees. If you receive Supplemental Security Income, you can check the address that we have on record with your account.

Visit our my Social Security webpage to get started. To create an account, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Provide a valid email address.
  • Have a Social Security number (SSN).
  • Provide a U.S. mailing address (includes military addresses, APO/FPO/DPO, AE, AP, or AA).

Once you have a valid email address, you are ready to create your personal my Social Security account. When you visit my Social Security, select the “Create an Account” button. You will have the option to create your new my Social Security account with one of our two credential partners: Login.gov or ID.me.

  • Login.gov is the public’s one account for simple, secure, and private access to participating U.S. government agencies.
  • ID.me is a single sign-on provider that meets the U.S. government’s online identity proofing and authentication requirements.

Please note, if you already have a Login.gov or ID.me account, you can select the appropriate button to sign in with either one and access your personal my Social Security account. If you previously verified your identity with Login.gov or ID.me, you don’t need to do so again. If you don’t have a Login.gov or ID.me account, please select the “Create an Account” link to start the one-time registration process.

If you create a new Login.gov credential, we will still complete the identity verification part, so you will need to provide some personal information to us. You will also receive an activation code from us to complete the process.

Remember, you can do much of your business with us online.

Right on Corrina. Heres what I know from talk with 2 agents today- Person is NOT ABLE to Change Address in MY ACCOUNT unless you ARE currently getting some sort of Benefit. OTHERWISE- its not possible on the website.
I just worked with two agents at the 800-772-1213 while in my ONLINE Account.
Spent about 20 minutes w her after 20+ minute phone wait time. Agent finally put me on hold– asked others at SSA– got the ANSWER. “Cant do Change of Address online– unless you ARE receiving benefits.” Weird eh?
Should be changed! n my case I ordered replacement SSN Card. Then realized it will likely be sent to address in the system even though i moved 1+ year ago- and mail forwarding is already off.
IMPORTANT DOC- to register to vote and Drive. Went into account– no way found to change– risk not getting importaNT THINGS FROM SSA.
SSA: YOU NEED TO CHANGE THIS.
      OTHERWISE LOVE THE WEBSITE.
      Robert

I have this problem also. You can’t even get access to the account without confirming your phone number first! Therefore, how do you go to , “My Profile” in order to do anything online?!

It of course assumes that everyone who receives social security receives it in the USA. Those of us living overseas still can’t access this facility. Still living in the stone age as far as the internet goes at SS.

    • CECILIA

YES STILL I CANNOT SIGN IN LEAVING OVERSEAS ..ONLY FOR USA RESIDENTS IS WORKING…NOT FOR US

  4. Debra A.

Need to log in but not have password nor username as I did have account years ago.

    • Ann C.

SSA is so concerned about security it’s absurd what it takes to keep your “my social security” account. Not all of us have instant internet or WIFI so going to our account isn’t used much. I created a Login.gov account, time 24 mins. But wasn’t able to get to my account. On hold 49 mins a rep tells me she would send me a temp password. That’s great. I told her I was homeless recently and my mail goes to a relative. It was critical I get a recent statement to prove my income for a new apt. Asap. I enter the temp password to a statement a new password will be sent to me in the mail in 5-10 DAYS!! Fill out my info. It would not take my family’s address only my old address. Being forced out in 7 days I had no time or a place for change of address. So I won’t get that classified password and still can’t show proof of income for a place to live. Traumatized living in a 100degree car, killing my therapy dog, am I now to freeze in my car during snow?
SSA guards your acct to change address/phone, wow, but shows no concern over 100,000s recepients using the worst card provider US Direct Express on the market. My card was hacked 5xs of 100s of dollars with every dispute denied. And incompetent customer service makes it pathetic. Make sure SSA protects my address/phone like fort Knox but it’s just fine to steal the only money I get to survive on, they could careless about. Time for govt reform.

Can not get In my account.

      • Ann C.

Hi, Sheila. We are sorry to hear that. If you created a personal my Social Security account before September 18, 2021 and you are still are unable to access your account, please call our dedicated my Social Security Hotline at 1-800-772-1213, and say “help desk” at the voice prompt. The help desk is available to callers between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. (Eastern Time).

The Login.gov contact center will assist you through the Login.gov proofing flow only i.e. to help create, sign in and manage your login.gov account. This is done only through their online web support page (https://login.gov/contact/) where you can submit your questions/concerns. Though you can submit your questions at any time, login.gov’s customer support operating hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) and it could take up to two business days for their customer support agents to respond to inquiries.

For ID.me registration and/or authentication process, you should contact ID.me through their customer support page on https://help.id.me/hc/en-us/categories/360005564453-Verifying-for-the-Social-Security-Administration. The page also allows you to submit your requests for any inquiries https://help.id.me/hc/en-us/requests/new.

        We hope this helps.

  5. Monique R.

Hi SSA, can you assist what if you don’t have access online, can you send in the same MC-354 update address (its a Medical form for the county office) it also has availability to add the signature would Social Security accept.

Does Social Security have a form # to report a change of address so we can mail the updates in?

    Please help!

  6. Randy

Please provide a followup article that actually discusses changing the information and not just making an account. As well, confirming how any changed information is verified to not be part of a hack. Thank you !!

I just got this info, when I log into my SS account there’s a message that states “Cannot Update Address or Phone Number Online” & I don’t know why. No info can be provided in “help” section either. I’m just curious in case I need to make those changes, why I can’t.

Hi, this blog post says that you can change your address and phone number online, but it only walks you through making an SSA account. It doesn’t walk you through how to change for address and phone number once logged in!

    • Randy

You are correct, as well they don’t indicate how the address and phone number changes are validated.

The only issue I see with this is if the person is not living in the USA or have an APO/FPO address the system does not allow you to change to an address in another country. Getting the FBU in Frankfurt Germany to assist in the matter is worst than going to the dentist. There is no response. One is told to try to Warsaw FBU but they sent us right back to the Frankfurt FBU. Improving your site would make life easier for many of us who are trying to apply to SS benefits but have a foreign address.
Thanks in advance for anything you can do to help us.

    • Ann C.

Hi, Denise. We are sorry to hear about your experience. We have referred your concerns to our Operations Staff. You can also submit feedback by visiting our Contact Social Security page. Once there, select the “Email Us” link. This will take you to the “Email A Question to our Support Team” form where you can complete and submit a compliment, complaint, or suggestion. We hope this is resolved soon.
