Change Your Address and Phone Number Online with my Social Security

If you receive Social Security benefits, the easiest way to change your address and phone number is by creating a personal my Social Security account. Once you create your account, you can update your contact information from your preferred location. This feature is available for people who receive retirement, survivors, or disability benefits, along with Medicare enrollees. If you receive Supplemental Security Income, you can check the address that we have on record with your account.
Visit our my Social Security webpage to get started. To create an account, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Provide a valid email address.
- Have a Social Security number (SSN).
- Provide a U.S. mailing address (includes military addresses, APO/FPO/DPO, AE, AP, or AA).
Once you have a valid email address, you are ready to create your personal my Social Security account. When you visit my Social Security, select the “Create an Account” button. You will have the option to create your new my Social Security account with one of our two credential partners: Login.gov or ID.me.
- Login.gov is the public’s one account for simple, secure, and private access to participating U.S. government agencies.
- ID.me is a single sign-on provider that meets the U.S. government’s online identity proofing and authentication requirements.
Please note, if you already have a Login.gov or ID.me account, you can select the appropriate button to sign in with either one and access your personal my Social Security account. If you previously verified your identity with Login.gov or ID.me, you don’t need to do so again. If you don’t have a Login.gov or ID.me account, please select the “Create an Account” link to start the one-time registration process.
If you create a new Login.gov credential, we will still complete the identity verification part, so you will need to provide some personal information to us. You will also receive an activation code from us to complete the process.
Remember, you can do much of your business with us online.

The change of address portal on the website is a crock as you get the message that you cannot change your address on line. So you call their phone number and get excuses why they can’t talk to you. If you try to change it at Medicare they tell you to contact Social Security. It’s the old pass the buck routine.

It seems a lot of people are basically having the same issues such as how to change their address or how to change their phone number because they have moved or they have a new phone number.
In my case I have a new phone number and iam 62 years old and would like to sign into my account to see how my retirement application is coming along. I worked since I was 16 years old and I could really use my retirement benefits. I’m not able to work because of health issues so I have no income at all. My electric has been shut off twice now since cold weather has been here and I will probably be shut off here soon again. I just want to change my phone number…that’s all I want so I can get into my account. I pray everyday for my retirement benefits.

Hi my name is Teresa and I’m having the same issue that you ate having. I was told by a social security employee that I would have to delete my account but I would receive two emails from them. I would have to wait 24 hours after the first email they send then they will send the second email however you only have a certain amount of time to reply to the second email and if you don’t then you have to start the deleting process all over again.

I have been trying to log into my SSA.gov for years! I cannot and cannot get a live person on the phone to help. I created an account but I get a continuous error loop. My financial advisor is located in a different city and we have called many times. HELP! I get my check direct deposit but i need to change my mailing address

I sit here reading all the issues that people are posting on blog, and all I see is how they are redirected back to contacting the office that is not helping them at all, what good is this blog, if you cannot help someone other then telling to to contact the office. You cannot get answers when you call the SS office, because you are placed on hold for hours, and when you go there it even worst.

My mother in law is moving to a different Assisted Living Facility in a few weeks but plans to change mailing address to her son’s address who is her POA. She has direct deposit for her social security. She also has a My Social Security Account. Does Social Security and/or medicare need to know both her residence address and her mailing address or just her mailing address?

If your mother in law needs help managing her benefits, you or her son may be interested in applying to become her representative payee. As a representative payee, you or he will have access to your mother in law’s records and the ability to update her account information. how do you change your mailing address if not yet receiving benefits. I’m 62 years old and waiting for full retirement age. Any information sent to old address will have my SS number on it.

Even though the website says I can update my address in My Social Security, that is not true. I have to call them every time, which is time consuming, and eats up my phone time while I am kept on hold for long periods of time. I receive social security benefits and am a medicare recipient, which means I should be able to do it on my computer. The social security information is incorrect, and should be fixed ASAP.
