Change Your Address and Phone Number Online with my Social Security
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: November 2, 2023
If you receive Social Security benefits, the easiest way to change your address and phone number is by creating a personal my Social Security account. Once you create your account, you can update your contact information from your preferred location. This feature is available for people who receive retirement, survivors, or disability benefits, along with Medicare enrollees. If you receive Supplemental Security Income, you can check the address that we have on record with your account.
Visit our my Social Security webpage to get started. To create an account, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Provide a valid email address.
- Have a Social Security number (SSN).
- Provide a U.S. mailing address (includes military addresses, APO/FPO/DPO, AE, AP, or AA).
Once you have a valid email address, you are ready to create your personal my Social Security account. When you visit my Social Security, select the “Create an Account” button. You will have the option to create your new my Social Security account with one of our two credential partners: Login.gov or ID.me.
- Login.gov is the public’s one account for simple, secure, and private access to participating U.S. government agencies.
- ID.me is a single sign-on provider that meets the U.S. government’s online identity proofing and authentication requirements.
Please note, if you already have a Login.gov or ID.me account, you can select the appropriate button to sign in with either one and access your personal my Social Security account. If you previously verified your identity with Login.gov or ID.me, you don’t need to do so again. If you don’t have a Login.gov or ID.me account, please select the “Create an Account” link to start the one-time registration process.
If you create a new Login.gov credential, we will still complete the identity verification part, so you will need to provide some personal information to us. You will also receive an activation code from us to complete the process.
Remember, you can do much of your business with us online.

I would like to change my address with SSA. Although I do not receive SS Benefits yet, I am registered with SSA on line and receive both paper and email notifications, ie, annual statement, … However, there is no place on my profile to change my physical address. Is is not required unless I am receiving Benefits because I receive email notifications from SSA?

Hi, Victoria. Thanks for visiting our blog. As far as your statement, only workers age 60 and older who do not have a my Social Security account receive a Social Security Statement in the mail three months prior to their birthday. If you are receiving Social Security retirement or disability, you can create a personal my Social Security account to change your address online. If you are receiving Supplemental Security Income, you should contact your local Social Security office immediately. We hope this helps.

When I initially commented I clicked the “Notify me when new comments are added” checkbox
and now each time a comment is added I get three emails with the same comment.
Is there any way you can remove me from that service?
Thank you!

I don’t need or want a personal account. I want a printable change of address form as we have moved. I need this so I can receive my 1099 at my new address without delays or after my forwarding has expired.

Hi, Michele. Thanks for visiting our blog. You can only create a personal my Social Security account using your own information and for your own exclusive use. You cannot create or use an account on behalf of another person, even if you have that person’s written permission. Please note that having a “Power of Attorney” does not give you legal authority to manage payments for someone receiving Social Security or SSI benefits. If your mother needs help managing her benefits, you may be interested in applying to become her representative payee. As a representative payee, you will have access to your mother’s records and the ability to update her account information.
A face-to-face interview is required when applying to be someone’s representative payee. If your mother cannot be present, a statement from her doctor would be helpful. The statement should say that your mother is not able to -mentally and physically- manage her Social Security benefits and identify you as the person responsible to keep her finances in order.
Please read our publication, A Guide For Representative Payees, for more information. If you have specific questions, call us at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., for assistance. You can also contact your local Social Security office. We hope this helps.

I have a new phone number and can’t gain access to my SSI account. The only way to get in my account is to confirm phone number from a text sent to me. I need a way to resolve this issue.
