person reviewing information onlineIf you receive Social Security benefits, the easiest way to change your address and phone number is by creating a personal my Social Security account. Once you create your account, you can update your contact information from your preferred location. This feature is available for people who receive retirement, survivors, or disability benefits, along with Medicare enrollees. If you receive Supplemental Security Income, you can check the address that we have on record with your account.

Visit our my Social Security webpage to get started. To create an account, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Provide a valid email address.
  • Have a Social Security number (SSN).
  • Provide a U.S. mailing address (includes military addresses, APO/FPO/DPO, AE, AP, or AA).

Once you have a valid email address, you are ready to create your personal my Social Security account. When you visit my Social Security, select the “Create an Account” button. You will have the option to create your new my Social Security account with one of our two credential partners: Login.gov or ID.me.

  • Login.gov is the public’s one account for simple, secure, and private access to participating U.S. government agencies.
  • ID.me is a single sign-on provider that meets the U.S. government’s online identity proofing and authentication requirements.

Please note, if you already have a Login.gov or ID.me account, you can select the appropriate button to sign in with either one and access your personal my Social Security account. If you previously verified your identity with Login.gov or ID.me, you don’t need to do so again. If you don’t have a Login.gov or ID.me account, please select the “Create an Account” link to start the one-time registration process.

If you create a new Login.gov credential, we will still complete the identity verification part, so you will need to provide some personal information to us. You will also receive an activation code from us to complete the process.

Remember, you can do much of your business with us online.

I have power of attorney for my father who is in memory care in Florida. I live in California. He re-located to a different facility in the same city he was living at however his address with SSA needs to be changed. He does not have a My SS account. I have been on hold apologetically (phone call) for over 40 minutes; I have searched online and can not find how I can change his mailing address with SSA. How do I change his address?

    • Ann C.

Hi, Dan. Thanks for visiting our blog. If your father needs help managing his benefits, you may be interested in applying to become his representative payee. As a representative payee, you will have access to your father’s records and the ability to update his account information. Please note that having a Power of Attorney does not give you legal authority to manage payments for someone receiving Social Security or SSI.

Generally, a face-to-face interview is required when applying to be someone’s representative payee. If your father cannot be present, a statement from his doctor would be helpful. The statement should say that your father is not able to -mentally and physically- manage his Social Security benefits and identify you as the person responsible to keep his finances in order.

Please read our publication, A Guide For Representative Payees. for more information. If you have specific questions, or to make an appointment. you can call us at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., for assistance. You can also contact your local Social Security office. We hope this helps.

To make matters worse, signing up for paperless tells me there’s still going to be mail going to old address?

  10. James L.

Can you link an older “my social security account” that uses screen name/password for logging in, to login.gov?

    • Ann C.

Hi, James. Thanks for your question. Yes, you are able to sign in with your Login.gov credentials instead of your previous my Social Security credentials. You can continue to have both sets of credentials if you wish. We hope this helps.

      • James L.

        Thank-you for the prompt reply.
My wife and I have Login.gov accounts. We share the same e-mail address and landline on “mysocialsecurity”. On Login.gov we created a new e-mail for my wife and now share a cell phone for texts. Will this have to be updated on “mysocialsecurity” before we link to Login.gov?
