With so many services available online through my Social Security, signing up for a secure account will help you conduct Social Security business from home.

With your personal my Social Security account, you can:

  • Estimate your future benefits and compare different dates or ages to begin receiving benefits.
  • Check the status of your Social Security application.
  • Review your work history.
  • Request a replacement Social Security card (in most States).

If you already receive benefits, you can also:

  • Get a benefit verification or proof of income letter.
  • Set up or change your direct deposit.
  • Change your address.
  • Request a replacement Medicare card.
  • Get a Social Security 1099 form (SSA-1099).

You can even use your personal my Social Security account to opt out of receiving certain notices by mail, such as the annual cost-of-living adjustments and the income-related monthly adjustment amount notice.  Instead, through the Message Center you can receive secure, sensitive communications.

Let your friends and family know that they can create a personal my Social Security account today.

Hello … asking for my sibling … can American retirees living in Asia sign on to My Social Security website? Thank you.

    • Vonda

Thanks for the question. At this time you must have a U. S. mailing address to create or access your online account. The “my Social Security” authentication system requires address verification as one of the essential criteria for issuing an account. People with APO/FPO/DPO addresses can create an account overseas, but our system does not support registration ad account creation for users with a foreign address yet.

We recommend that individuals living outside the United States contact the nearest Federal Benefit Unit in the area for any assistance related to Social Security programs and benefits. Also, our Office of International Operations home page provides more information to assist our customers living abroad.

    • Vonda

Hi Suzan, thanks for using our blog. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS), not Social Security, issues the Economic Income Payments. Social Security cannot answer EIP questions about your specific situation. Check out our Social Security and Coronavirus web page for more details. We hope this helps.

I can’t get my income letter up to print it. Can’t find it. Can you send it by email? Can you help?

    • Vonda

Hi Sherry, thanks for using our blog. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for details on how to get a benefit verification letter. This letter is sometimes called a budget letter, a benefits letter, a proof of income letter or a proof of award letter. You also may be able to request a benefit verification letter by using our automated telephone service at 1-800-772-1213. You can conduct the automated services 24 hours a day. At the prompt, indicate that you’re requesting a proof of income letter. We hope this helps.
