If you already receive benefits, you can also:

  • Get a benefit verification or proof of income letter.

If you are a US citizen living abroad, you don’t have a US address. How does one sign up for my Social Security without a US address?

    • Vonda

Hi Sandy, thank you for your question. At this time you must have a U. S. mailing address to create or access your online account. The “my Social Security” authentication system requires address verification as one of the essential criteria for issuing an account. People with APO/FPO/DPO addresses can create an account overseas, but our system does not support registration and account creation for users with a foreign address yet.

I have tried a million times to set up my account & it’s impossible to do because of the verification part. I checked to furnish drivers lic & entered info from my DL but then it asks me to do the next option also of entering last 8 digits of credit card or benefit amt etc..I DO NOT HAVE CREDIT CARD since debit card don’t work that’s all I have so went back to check answer financial questions which ask about paying off a mortgage in 2015 I’ve never paid off mortgage so checked none of the above on question. It said I didn’t answer correctly & also required to enter credit card number with that option. So there is NO WAY I can ever set my acct up without having a credit card PERIOD?! What happens when you’re answering the credit report questions and can’t answer them cause they either don’t pertain to me or I have no idea what company I might have gotten a credit card through several years ago? Also I have divorced & remarried 3 times and my name wasn’t on any credit cards but feel like possibly I was included on ex husbands card but never had access to card or info so I can’t answer those questions? So frustrating that it is so complicated & hard to set up account there’s no place tells you what you can do if you have no credit card or why you can’t send drivers license for verification you still have to enter the other option no matter what and there is no way around having to use credit card or tax records (I haven’t had to or filed taxes in years) how do I set an account up when it’s impossible to have only one way to set up & I don’t have any of that documentation or cards? I’ve worked on this for over 3 hrs watched videos & read blogs, questions & answers!?

Good luck my wife is in a similar situation. The exception is that she has the drivers license information and a Visa card and a MasterCard that is valid however it won’t except it. The people at Social Security will tell you well we use Experian or Equifax. And of course social Security information is probably outdated as most government Information is. So it’s impossible to file for an account online. They say you have to do it in person at a Social Security office. Of course all the offices are closed. So basically we got nothing the whole country is on hold until they decide to open up Social Security offices so people can File in person so too use their fancy-schmancy online services Until then we got nothing.

Her first and closing names have been spelled incorrectly on the letter, but her address changed into correct. She did NOT location any calls to SSA and does not need this info.
