I want you to hear directly from me how the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting our services. The first thing you should know is that we continue to pay benefits. Be aware that scammers may try to trick you into thinking the pandemic is stopping your Social Security payments but that is not true. Don’t be fooled.

To protect you and help stop the spread of this coronavirus, we cannot accept visitors in our offices at this time. There are several other ways you can get help. Many services are available online. If you have a critical need that you cannot address online, we can help you over the phone.

Please visit our website to find out what services we are continuing and which ones we are suspending, how to contact us, and important information about deadlines we are extending to ease the burden on you and medical providers during this pandemic.

I just saw via USPS that my stimulus check or card was supposedly delivered May 23 but I never received it. Firstly, why would it appear that it was junk mail? I have tried to notify the IRS that I haven’t received it but am unable to find the correct avenue to do so. I received the letter from the president yesterday. Why wouldn’t the letter be sent first. I’m unsure if it was lost, stolen, or I threw it away unknowingly what it was. I know it’s probably not your responsibility but I will accept any guidance you can provide. Thank you.

I would like to know how I am going to get my SS and get a replacement card as I have been instructed that I MUST show up in person being I am a green card holder. Both your website and my SS advisor told me it is not safe to send my important papers in mail as they can not guarantee I will get them back and I will not part with my green card as that is too big a risk. I was suppose to retire in June but it has been pushed to August. I no longer have a job and need the social security I earned over the past 40 years.

How about an update on opening of the SSA offices.

I turned 65 in May .. I did sign up for Medicare on time I am getting a lot of information in the mail ..I am still working fulltime for the state .. do I need to do anything or can I not do anything else at this time.

    • Vonda V.

Hi Marvin, thanks for using our blog. If you are covered under a group health plan based on current employment, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) that will let you sign up for Medicare Part B after age 65. You have an 8-month SEP to sign up for Part A and/or Part B that starts at one of these times (whichever happens first):
      • The month after the employment ends
      • The month after group health plan insurance based on current employment ends.

Usually, you don’t pay a late enrollment penalty if you sign up during a SEP.

You should always check with your health benefits advisor, or health plan representative to see what’s best for you. To learn more about the Medicare enrollment periods visit http://www.Medicare.gov.

I have not received my benefits for June yet, should I be concerned or patient?

    • Ann C.

Hi, Jayne. Thanks for your question. If you do not receive your electronic payment on the scheduled pay date, please contact your bank or financial institution first. If you still need to report a late, missing, or stolen Social Security payment, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions. Thanks!

On May 19 my step mother died. The social security check (direct deposit) has been properly cancelled and no payment was received. However, the payment she received in early May has not yet been recovered. Why? Logically, a death notification should trigger two events simultaneously: (1) cancel future payments and (2) immediately trigger a recovery. Why wasn’t the second effected? I have to file her estate and gather assets and liabilities. Life goes on for the living.

    • Vonda V.

Hi Donald, thanks for using our blog. We are very sorry for your loss. To be eligible for a Social Security benefit payment, a person has to live throughout the entire month. We can’t pay benefits for the month of death. If the deceased was receiving Social Security benefits, you must return the benefit received for the month of death or any later months. Keep in mind that Social Security benefits are paid the month after they are due. If the beneficiary passes away in May, then you must return the benefit paid in June and continuing. However, some of the deceased’s family members may be eligible to receive survivors benefits. For details on survivor benefits, check out our Benefits Planner: Survivors.
