I want you to hear directly from me how the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting our services. The first thing you should know is that we continue to pay benefits. Be aware that scammers may try to trick you into thinking the pandemic is stopping your Social Security payments but that is not true. Don’t be fooled.

To protect you and help stop the spread of this coronavirus, we cannot accept visitors in our offices at this time. There are several other ways you can get help. Many services are available online. If you have a critical need that you cannot address online, we can help you over the phone.

Please visit our website to find out what services we are continuing and which ones we are suspending, how to contact us, and important information about deadlines we are extending to ease the burden on you and medical providers during this pandemic.

    • Kenny O.

Hi, Patricia. Our offices remain closed to the public for face-to-face service. During the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic, we are dedicating available staff to serve people in most critical need of our services. For more information and to subscribe for updates, visit here.

When is the effingham Il or Decatur Il offices going to reopen? Need to talk with somebody. Call several times put on hold for at least 20 minutes then hung up on.

Why are our local Social Security offices not open yet?

  5. Saustainis

    Hi,

When the offices will reopen because I have to get my SSN card in order to receive stimulus check. I spoke on the phone with one of the consultants from SSA, he said IT HAS TO BE DONE IN PERSON in my case. When will you reopen, it is already phase 2 in New York City. THANKS!

    • Vonda V.

Hi Saustainis, thank you for your question. If you are unable to apply online, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen. You can also call your local office and see if they will mail you an SSN printout instead of a replacement Social Security card. We are unable to process replacement Social Security card requests by phone at this time. Use our Social Security Office Locator to find your local office address. We hope this helps.

      • Amy A.

It’s not acceptable that the local offices are not open yet. We are entering phase 4 in Monroe county. Absolutely no reason these offices should not be providing services to the community

I see you have avoid answering question on offices reopening lately so I will repost my question. Maybe you can tell us are at least tell us if they are even addressing this issue and how so?
I would like to know how I am going to get my SS and get a replacement card as I have been instructed that I MUST show up in person being I am a green card holder. Both your website and my SS advisor told me it is not safe to send my important papers in mail as they can not guarantee I will get them back and I will not part with my green card as that is too big a risk. I was suppose to retire in June but it has been pushed to August. I no longer have a job and need the social security I earned over the past 40 years.

    • Vonda V.

Hi Steves, thanks for using our blog. Our offices remain closed to the public for face-to-face service. However, you can apply for retirement benefits online. Our system is set up to take applications four months in advance of when you your benefits to begin.

You can call us at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance or you can contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

      • steve

I did apply online but have been told I must bring my green card and birth certificate in person. So you reply does not address my specific question. Can’t do the when office isnt open. Also will not issue me a replacment card without coming in person per website. Also this does not help those who are sheltering at home and dont have access to internet.
