Hi Mona, thank you for your question. You can get a benefit verification letter online instantly by using your personal my Social Security account. This letter is sometimes called a budget letter, a benefits letter, a proof of income letter or a proof of award letter. To set up your account, visit the my Social Security web page and select, “Sign In or Create an Account.” You will need to provide some personal information to verify your identity, choose a username and password and follow the rest of the steps to finish creating your account. Once you create your account, scroll down to the Benefits and Payments section and choose “get benefit verification letter” where you can instantly view, print, or save your official letter.

If you are unable to create an account or encounter a problem, you may call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. At the voice prompt, say “helpdesk” or you can contact your local Social Security office.

I am delaying my retirement benefits till I reach 70. My question i, When the adjustments for COLAs and the Delayed Retirement Credits ( 8% annualy) will be reflected in my Social Security Statements. Is that annually or when I finally decided to get the benefits?
    Many thanks

    • V.V.

Hi Jose, thank you for your question. The Social Security Statements are updated annually. Every year, your employer sends your earnings for the previous year to Social Security. We use the previous years earnings to calculate future benefit amounts.

A worksheet (IRS Notice 703) is included for determining whether any portion of the Social Security benefits received are subject to income tax.
