Earlier this week, The White House issued national guidance regarding Opening Up America Again. We are evaluating this information as it relates to our agency and are continuing to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation across the nation. In fulfilling Social Security’s mission, when we reopen offices to the public, we will provide a safe environment for both the people we serve and our employees.

As we continue to develop our plans, our offices will remain closed to the public for face-to-face service, and our employees will continue to work remotely and provide services to the public. We will provide updates moving forward and post updated information on the status of our offices, by state, at our website. Our agency will provide these updates directly, and please disregard other sources of information regarding the status of our offices.

We will continue to provide the vital service the public relies on. Please visit our website for more information about our services during the pandemic.

I’m 49 yrs old soon to be 50 and my health is not the best and my question is how do I go about the start process of my SSDI?

    • Vonda V.

Hi DeShannon. We pay disability benefits through two programs: the Social Security Disability Insurance program (SSDI) and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. To qualify for SSDI benefits, you must have worked long enough and recently enough in jobs covered by Social Security (usually within the last 10 years). The (SSI) program is a needs based program that gives cash assistance to disabled individuals with limited income and resources. We pay disability benefits to people who are unable to work because of a medical condition that is expected to last one year or more or to end in death. If you think you may be eligible to receive disability benefits and would like to apply, you can use our online application. We hope this helps!

I want to know how much longer do you intend to remain closed? I mean can you not accommodate by appointment only. Your staying closed has inconvenienced many. I mean we where only to shut down for a little bit. This appears like you will stay closed long term. It’s now September. I’m sorry am I the only one who finds this ridiculous and inconvenient. No I will not mail my originally documents only to never get them back. I don’t see why you can’t open and start doing like DMV. Appointments.

When do you guys plan on reopening?
I refuse to mail in my original documents for it to get “stolen” or “lost”.

Or at least have a office drop off box. Something!
