Earlier this week, The White House issued national guidance regarding Opening Up America Again. We are evaluating this information as it relates to our agency and are continuing to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation across the nation. In fulfilling Social Security’s mission, when we reopen offices to the public, we will provide a safe environment for both the people we serve and our employees.

As we continue to develop our plans, our offices will remain closed to the public for face-to-face service, and our employees will continue to work remotely and provide services to the public. We will provide updates moving forward and post updated information on the status of our offices, by state, at our website. Our agency will provide these updates directly, and please disregard other sources of information regarding the status of our offices.

We will continue to provide the vital service the public relies on. Please visit our website for more information about our services during the pandemic.

Your blog is dated back to April, nothing new in regards to reopening up while most of the United States is open and functioning this agency is not.
Life is continuing to moved forward and to ensure the function of our day to day lives we need to be able to obtain services which are impossible without mailing in original documents that I personally can not afford to do.

So please give some information as in when the offices will reopen for face to face services.
I need to change my name so I can be added to my husbands medical insurance policy, you would think that is important.

Not only is it costly to mail in documents,
their offices are being flooded with mail (I’m told by my local office) and with limited staff it could be weeks before it’s looked at and you still risk not receiving your original identification and documents returned to you.

I will turn 70 in July,2020. I would like the highest monthly payment. Does social security hold back a month (ie: July benefit paid in August)? I would like to know so that when I apply if I should start benefit in July or August.

I need to change my name and understand I can’t do that online or by mail. When are you opening? I am a dental hygienist working in people’s mouths. Unsure why a office like this isn’t open and I have to be working in someone’s mouth???

    • Vonda V.

Hi Lisa, thank you for using our blog. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page on how to change your name. If you do not want to mail in your documents, which will be returned, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen. Use our Social Security Office Locator to find your local office address. We hope this helps.

I need a name change as well and am been told I will have to do it by mail- by sending the local office my application, which I obtained online and completed, along with a certified copy of my divorce decree which I have, and also my actual drivers license. So I risk losing my only form of official photo ID in the mail, and drive illegally and risk getting a citation. If the SSA are not going to open it’s offices why won’t they temporarily accept a notarized photo copy of a Driver’s License?

    Hello,
I would like to know how soon the social security offices will reopen for in person services as I need an ssn to work currently. I got into an internship program which requires ssn and I am an international student. I have been waiting for so long for the offices to reopen as many businesses have been able to reopen safely and are operating using all the safety protocols. You guys should kindly act on the matter.
    Thanks

I am in the same situation too. I need this as it is very much important to run the payroll and to verify. There is service for everything in SSA online but except for the new cards. They can also set up a plan for issuing cards by asking us to mail the documents or conducting online interviews with a video call.

Hello Good day..i want to change my name into my married so that i can. Apply a driver’s license in DMV…they dont accept my application because my name in employment authorization id is married name and my SSN is single name…when SSA reopen again?

  6. Kemeisha

When will the offices be reopen? I really need to get my social security so I can start working soon!

    • Vonda V.

Hi Kemeisha, thanks for using our blog. First, realize you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important. However, if you must get a replacement card, you may be able to apply online. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for details on how to apply for a replacement Social Security card. If you cannot request a replacement card online, call your local office and request that we mail you an SSN printout instead of a replacement Social Security card. We are unable to process replacement Social Security card requests by phone at this time.

I had set up a my social security account. However I have lost the information to get into it. My yahoo account would not let me into it, so I used my husbands gmail account cobsmith02@gmail.com. I now have my own gmail account and would like to erase the old “my social security” since I do not have the info to get into it, and set up one that I can write down the info on so I can get into my ss account. I will need to talk to a live person on this matter. You can reach me at Martha Smith (719)691-1878. I would also like to know when the SS Office in Lamar, Colorado will reopen. Thank You!

    • Vonda V.

Hi Martha, thank you for your question. After you sign in to your my Social Security account, you can update your email address. After inputting your username and password, you will be at the security code screen. If you receive your security code via email only, then indicate that you cannot access the options listed above and need to reset where you receive security codes. We will then send you a letter with a reset code and instructions.

You can call us at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance or you can contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

    Hello,

i arrived in the US mid-march, on a J-1 visa as a trainee. Since my arrival, offices are closed. I was confirmed by phone I was eligible for a new SSN, but that I need to wait for offices to re-open in order to proceed. I need this SSN in order to be able to get on the payroll, update my bank account, obtain an FTIN, get my drivers license among other things. I called several times since then but I still get the same answer. Do you have an estimated date of when offices will be re-opened ?

    Thank you and best regards

    Hi,

Since I have arrived as an NRA trainee on a J-1 visa, SSA offices are closed. I arrived mid-March in Camarillo, CA. I still need to file for a new Social Security Number, in order to be able to get paid, update my bank account, get my driver license and other services. I tried to contact our local office multiple times but the only response I got is that I need to wait for the office to reopen. I was confirmed by phone that i was eligible for a new SSN. When will offices re-open? it’s been now more than two months offices are closed. Do you have an estimated date?

    Thank you and Best regards,

    • Vonda V.

Needing to know on how to have my SS and SSI sent for me from the US to my Bank Account in Israel. Need to know this before I leave on how to go about this?? All information concerning this will be much appreciated.

    Sincerely, Esther Glazer

    • Vonda V.

Hi Esther, thanks for your question. When you move, you are required to report your change of address to Social Security, even if we are sending your payments to a bank or other financial institution.

Our publication, “Your Payments While You Are Outside the United States”, explains how being outside the United States may affect your Social Security payments.

If you are a U.S. citizen, you may continue to receive payments outside the United States as long as you are eligible for payment and you are in a country where we can send payments. If you aren’t a U.S. citizen, you must meet one of the conditions for payment described in this publication.

You may use our Payments Abroad Screening Tool to see if your benefits will continue indefinitely, stop after six consecutive months or if certain country specific restrictions apply.

We also recommend that individuals planning to leave the United States visit our Office of International Operations home page, which provides additional information for our customers living abroad. We hope this information helps!
