Earlier this week, The White House issued national guidance regarding Opening Up America Again. We are evaluating this information as it relates to our agency and are continuing to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation across the nation. In fulfilling Social Security’s mission, when we reopen offices to the public, we will provide a safe environment for both the people we serve and our employees.

As we continue to develop our plans, our offices will remain closed to the public for face-to-face service, and our employees will continue to work remotely and provide services to the public. We will provide updates moving forward and post updated information on the status of our offices, by state, at our website. Our agency will provide these updates directly, and please disregard other sources of information regarding the status of our offices.

We will continue to provide the vital service the public relies on. Please visit our website for more information about our services during the pandemic.

Due to ssn office closure how can one apply for new ssn, if one is not US citizen?

    • Ramya

They don’t help us with this Nitin. I am in the same situation too. I have called many times and they say that it is possible only with in-person appointments but they don’t give it now as the offices are closed. We need to wait till the offices are open. I seriously don’t understand one thing here. When there is a service for everything through online, I am surprised why SSA is not taking steps to serve new immigrants as well through video calls or interviews. It is us who knows how we are suffering now. Its so pathetic.

There appears to be no way that new refugees can present their documents to a SS staff person to apply for
A new social security card to which they are entitled.

This results in those who want to work being unable to work and receiving welfare to survive. Please address a solution.

When will Social security office reopen? I have noticed most of the state license centre and other offices are reopening now to share/ease the workload but SSA office is still closed. It would be great if SSA office will resume their work on appointment basis.Thanks.

I am retiring June 30th from NYS Teachers and am 62.I do not feel comfortable sending my documents in the mail. I am losing my money that I have earned after teaching 36 years. So please open your offices soon. Is there any date in the near future?

    • Vonda V.

Hi Tammy, thanks for using our blog. Our system is set up to take applications four months in advance, and you can apply for your benefits online. Most often, there is documentation required. Keep in mind that benefits are paid the month after they are due. So, for instance, if you want your benefits to begin with the month of July, you will receive your first benefit payment in August. Please visit our Social Security Retirement Planner for more information. Thanks!

    Hi,
To one of my comments, I have got a reply saying that the important thing now is knowing my social security number instead of card. But, if this is the first time I am requesting for the SSN, then the process is showing all the proofs and having an in-person interview. I have called a number of times requesting to accept it through mail and I have sent all the proofs as well. But i got my documents back saying that this is possible only with in-person interview. If that is the case please plan to have video call appointments for showing the proofs and accept digital signatures. Else if there is any change in the process of requesting a new or initial number, please post that.

Please reopen offices so that marriage name changes can be done. Those of us who have gotten married cannot change our name online. Social Security name change is the vital first step before obtaining a new driver’s license, which we do have to show very often.

    • Vonda V.

Hi Cheryl, thank you for using our blog and congratulations on getting married! Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page on how to change your name. If you do not want to mail in your documents, which will be returned, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen. Use our Social Security Office Locator to find your local office address. We hope this helps.

      • Dario G.

Dear Vanda the issue is the initial first time social security cards for immigrants so we are able to work. That’s what we need to have the in person interviews to agiliza the cards

    • Duniesky C.

It seems the personnel of the SSA is not understanding that the need is for a new social security number and initial card for immigrants that are being held of jobs. The site said that for special cases like this appointment should be available however when we call it says no and we need the initial cards and in person interviews to get those cards and numbers please advise when will it be possible as currently we cannot work

  7. Dan

please reopen Office faster! requested for new card. I try to call the local office but don’t provide in office appointment for first time application

  8. Hollyann

My husband must see a physician provided by social security office as we are uninsured. He isn’t able to continue his claim until he does so. Currently the clinic he is assigned to has closed. When will they reopen for him to be able to complete the disability claims process?

  9. Ramya

The most unusual and problematic situation is having an offer but it is still on hold as there is no SSN. Please make plans for issuing new or original SSN cards atleast through conducting in person online interview. When everything is happening around, y is SSA office Shut? Does it require more time to take steps or safety measures as other stores do? We being immigrants cannot survive without a job and this is so horrible of not having an SSN thought we get a job. If you are not planning to open, then you need to be planning all the services through online itself. Please do not say that you are serving better through online. People like me are suffering a lot.

    • Vonda V.

Hi Ramya, thanks for using our blog. First, realize you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important. However, if you must get a replacement card, you may be able to apply online. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for details on how to apply for a replacement Social Security card. If you cannot request a replacement card online, call your local office and request that we mail you an SSN printout instead of a replacement Social Security card. We are unable to process replacement Social Security card requests by phone at this time.

      • Ramya

        Hi Sir,
If I need a initial SSN, they are telling me that it is possible only having in-person interview. How is this possible? Please suggest me.

      • Duniesky C.

They are not providing appointments even after explaining my case. This is so important for immigrants especially and a very bad news that there is no help to get a new card.

  10. Pooja D.

Hi, I would like to know when the local SSA offices will be reopening? This post is from over 6 weeks ago so since they has there not be any development in making a decision? Most states are now opening up/ moving into phrase 3 so why can the SSA offices in these states not open up? Please provide some up to date information on this as it is essential business to have a SSN for doing anything helpful in the USA.
