Earlier this week, The White House issued national guidance regarding Opening Up America Again. We are evaluating this information as it relates to our agency and are continuing to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation across the nation. In fulfilling Social Security’s mission, when we reopen offices to the public, we will provide a safe environment for both the people we serve and our employees.

As we continue to develop our plans, our offices will remain closed to the public for face-to-face service, and our employees will continue to work remotely and provide services to the public. We will provide updates moving forward and post updated information on the status of our offices, by state, at our website. Our agency will provide these updates directly, and please disregard other sources of information regarding the status of our offices.

We will continue to provide the vital service the public relies on. Please visit our website for more information about our services during the pandemic.

I am having many difficulties with creating my social security online and really need the offices to open while taking all the precautions needed. Not everything can be done online please can someone give me an estimated date as to when the offices will be opening up again.

Im truing to get a job and need a replacement card out in northern nevada. What am I supposed to do?!?!!

    • V.V.

Hi Spencer, thank you for your question. First, realize you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important. However, if you must get a replacement card, you may be able to apply online. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for details on how to apply for a replacement Social Security card. If you are unable to apply online and you do not want to mail in your documents, which will be returned, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen. Use our Social Security Office Locator to find your local office address. We hope this helps.

I would like to know when social security will be reopened to the public?

    • V.V.

Hi Kayan, thanks for using our blog. Social Security Offices are closed to the public for face-to-face service during the COVID-19 pandemic but you can still get our help by using our online services or calling us.

You can do most of your business with SSA online. Before calling us, please visit our website to see our list of convenient and secure self-service options. Save time and go online.

I would like to retire at the end of August. If I do everything on line now how long does it take before you start receiving your first Social Security check?

    • V.V.

Hi Michael, thanks for using our blog. You may start receiving Social Security retirement benefits as early as age 62 or as late as age 70. Monthly benefits are reduced if you start them any time before your “full retirement age”. Your full retirement age depends on your date of birth. It may be between age 66 and 67. This could affect the amount of your benefits and when you want the benefits to start.

Our system is set up to take applications four months in advance, and you can apply for your benefits online. Keep in mind that benefits are paid the month after they are due. So, for instance, if you want your benefits to begin with the month of September, you will receive your first benefit payment in October.

Please visit our Social Security Retirement Planner for more information.

We need social security offices open. There are things that cannot be done online or by phone. I don’t feel secure sending sensitive certified documents in the mail.
If store workers, truckers etc working with precautions then so can SSA.

  7. Lourdes M.

I need my Social security Number. I applied in March 2020, and I still do not have a number. I was told I need a social Security Number to apply for a job.

    • V.V.

Hi Lourdes, thanks for using our blog. We apologize for the inconvenience. For security reasons, we do not have access to information about your Social Security card application in this venue. Typically, after we receive the application and verify the documents, you can expect to receive the card in the mail within 10 – 14 business days. Unfortunately, if you have not received the card by then, you may need to go back into the office once it reopens. In the meantime, you can call your local office and request that we mail you an SSN printout instead of a replacement Social Security card. We are unable to process replacement Social Security card requests by phone at this time.
