The Treasury Department announced that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department.  Treasury anticipates these automatic payments to go out no later than early May.

SSI recipients with no qualifying children do not need to take any action in order to receive their $1,200 economic impact payment. The payments will be automatic.

SSI recipients who have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should now go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info section to provide their information. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If SSI beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait until later to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

This is great news for SSI recipients, and I want to remind recipients with qualifying children to go to IRS.gov soon so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for. I also want to thank the dedicated employees of the Treasury Department, Social Security, and the Internal Revenue Service for making this happen and working non-stop on this issue.

SSI Recipients with Dependent Children Should Still Go To IRS.gov to Provide Their Information

Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries (who don’t normally file taxes) will also qualify for automatic payments of $1,200 from Treasury. These payments are anticipated to start arriving around the end of April.

The Treasury Department, not Social Security, will make these automatic payments to beneficiaries. Recipients will generally receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their SSI or Social Security benefits.

For those SSI and Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, with dependent children, who use Direct Express debit cards, additional information will be available soon regarding the steps to take when claiming children under 17, on the IRS website.

Please note that the agency will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

For more information about Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, please see our most recent blog.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found on the IRS website. In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.

I am on SSI. Lived with my parents last year so they claimed me as a dependent. Jan 1st 2020 I moved out and live alone.

Because of last year I will not get anything??? How is this fair

    • Tammy

It isn’t fair at all !! I stayed with my daughter to save some money to get back on my feet, she claimed me on her taxes so for that reason I don’t get a stimulus check! Because we were claimed for “last year” we don’t need money just as much as the rest of the world ?! Governor Newsom is going the extra mile to make sure that even the illegal immigrants will receive money!!

      • Anon

None of my family even needed the money. Me however, it would have helped so much.

But because of last years living situation I get nothing.

  2. Samantha

So if im reading this right, ppl that are on SSI Nd have no kids, we will get our reg check on the 1st like always Nd 1200?? I could be wrong but thats what im gettin out of this whole thang.

  3. Chris L.

Well thank God we are finally in the works of getting these checks. I’ve heard on the news as well as other sources also that people like us on social security ssi the likes are going to start to get a monthly boost in our benifits as well as our stimilus checks so 1200 dollars plus a huge boost in monthly benifits. Thank God for Elizabeth Warren and the Democrats anyways anyone else hear the same thing o my gosh finally our government is taking care of us poor people thank God.

    • Sweetie

I am wondering if my stimules check will come on my direct express. Card

      • Chris L.

Yes it will just be patient if you are on ssi early May ssdi social security or survivor’s benifits end of April you can thank Nancy pelosi and Elizabeth Warren because not only are we all getting the 1200 per person 2400 per couple and 500 per child but they fought really hard to get everyone on the program social security ssi a huge boost in our benifits like 200-400 a month extra. I heard on the news and other sources Trump just wanted to give it to the rich not us anyways at least we finally are getting something thank God.

        • Chris L.

I just looked it up it’s on the hill and other media online it’s the phase 3 stimilus package it has to pass through Senate congress and Trump must sign it but phase 3 of Corona virus social security ssi ssdi we get 200 a month extra on top of what we get now for the next 2 years Trump said he would sign it also the Democrats pushed this for us you can thank them not the Republicans Democrats care about poor people Republicans don’t just ask me my father is a republican he does not care how my wife and I are doing finaccly and every time I ask to borrow money he yells at me go figure replicans only care about themselves they don’t care about us so thank God we have people in office who care about us and are fighting for us.

        • Rosita B.

So when are we supposed to get the extra on ssi per month

      • Chris L.

Once the Senate and congress and Trump pass the third bill of the stimilus it’s in the works. Keep an eye on the news.

        • Michelle R.

While you people are all bashing Trump and complaining about your economic stimulus checks taking too long, remember this. You are still getting a regular monthly check from SSA. There are working families out there who have ZERO income right now and are trying to take care of their children. Put yourself in their shoes for a minute and think of others who have it worse.

          • Amy H.

Yes im one of them no income i didnt even get the stimulus money yet

    • James G.

Keep watching cnn msn. You can thank Donald Trump for the 1200. Dems don’t give a rat’s as s about you, they just want to use you to get power back.

      • Chris L.

Frankly I did not like your comment it was impolite I do not watch CNN MSNBC I watch the local news and Fox news and you can bet that I am not a republican or Democrat I am an independent. And you can bet Fox news has no info about stimilus payments they hardly talk about it and you can also rest assure Trump does not care one bit about you not one bit he only. cares about his rich friends Trump didn’t help the people on social security get the stimilus the Democrats did so before you judge get your facts strait.

    • BP

Sorry but no such monthly increase has even been debated in congress, much less voted on.

    • BP

That monthly SS increase you heard about is simply a proposal. It is not currently being seriously considered and has not reached debate in congress and certainly no where near being voted on. We can only wish.

  4. John

Okay so who on social security has got theirs?

  5. Amanda

I’m the payee for my 10 ur old who’s on ssi for autism will his amount be 500 or 1200 ? I keep reading 1200 for ssi recipients does that include children?

    • Michelle

I don’t think so, the $1200 is for adults. If you file taxes and claim him, his will come to you as your dependent for $500. They have likely taken all child SSI recipients out of the SSI list of eligible people because they are assuming someone has or will claim them. That is a good question though that has not been clearly spelled out. If you didn’t file in 2018 or 2019 though, you will need to take action to get both.

      • Jeanne S.

Michelle,OH so very taxing this is.pun intended.I am a recipient and also raising my grand daughter since birth.I am also her payee. My sons GF has been fraudulently claiming her on her taxes. My grand doesnot reside with my sons GF(bio mom),nor is she supported for by her in anyway. What makes this more taxing is the GF has just claimed my disabled son on her taxes against his agreement.I am his payee and he does not reside with me.She has just recieved 1200 plus 500 for my grand daughter.I had to tell my son he will recieve nothing.Due to the fact that the SSA has the current info in their computers,im wondering if my grand will recieve her stim via her direct express?I donot want to confuse the IRS computers. Is the IRS verifying living situations with other state and government agencies?Ive also wondered how families are juggled if theres a split living for some.I now have a fraud report form to fill n send. This will be a lengthy investigation.Due to alot of last minute changes and trouble shooting,do you think the IRS will look into blatent signs of tax fraud? It seems that SS fraud is not an issue as much as thetax fraud is,for many many people.I know im not the only rare child grandparent situation.Do you have any input on this?Ty, Jeanne n lil M.

  9. Shavona

Hi I recieve SSI and social security I went to H&R Block to file and the lady that handled my paperwork put that my daughter is my son is that going to affect my return I called them to see if that could be corrected she said I should be ok I also tried to correct it on the the IRS site it said my application had already been accepted.

    • Michelle

Hi, I am a tax preparer, and I don’t think that will matter as long as the date of birth and SSN are correct. The relationship has more to do with the manner in which they qualify as a dependent, and son/daughter are equal in that respect. Other types of relatives like mother, aunt, sister would not be equivalent if the error was that far off from the true relationship.

      • Angel

Michelle, I have a question with you being a tax preparer. If you know the answer, wonderful! If not, that’s ok too!

I’m on Social Security (not SSDI, not SSI), and I have a minor dependent who should qualify for the $500 stimulus child benefit. They are saying to go to the website and put our info in if we have minor dependents so they know to include them, I get that. But, what if, the child is receiving a minimal amount each month (under my benefit, not their own) directly from Social Security already, and I’m listed as the rep payee. Wouldn’t they then know I have a minor dependent? Wouldn’t I chance delaying things by putting my info into the website?

I’m sorry this is so long! I’m trying to give as much info as possible! I can’t find anyone, anywhere, asking questions with a situation like mine. Nor can I get the IRS to reply back.

Thank you in advance for any help or advice you might have!

        • Sheffield B.

I get SSI on a net spend card direct deposit will my stimulus come on there

          • V.V.

Hi Sheffield, thank you for your question. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17 do not need to take any action with the IRS. You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS. You should receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as you would normally receive your Social Security benefits. Treasury expects automatic payments for Social Security beneficiaries no later than the end of April and automatic payments for SSI recipients no later than early May. We hope this helps.

  10. Karen

    Thank you just have faith.
