Supplemental Security Income Recipients Will Receive Automatic COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: February 21, 2023
The Treasury Department announced that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department. Treasury anticipates these automatic payments to go out no later than early May.
SSI recipients with no qualifying children do not need to take any action in order to receive their $1,200 economic impact payment. The payments will be automatic.
SSI recipients who have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should now go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info section to provide their information. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If SSI beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait until later to receive their $500 per qualifying child.
This is great news for SSI recipients, and I want to remind recipients with qualifying children to go to IRS.gov soon so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for. I also want to thank the dedicated employees of the Treasury Department, Social Security, and the Internal Revenue Service for making this happen and working non-stop on this issue.
SSI Recipients with Dependent Children Should Still Go To IRS.gov to Provide Their Information
Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries (who don’t normally file taxes) will also qualify for automatic payments of $1,200 from Treasury. These payments are anticipated to start arriving around the end of April.
The Treasury Department, not Social Security, will make these automatic payments to beneficiaries. Recipients will generally receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their SSI or Social Security benefits.
For those SSI and Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, with dependent children, who use Direct Express debit cards, additional information will be available soon regarding the steps to take when claiming children under 17, on the IRS website.
Please note that the agency will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found on the IRS website. In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.

Hi Donald, thank you for your question. Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17 do not need to take any action with the IRS. You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS. You should receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as you would normally receive your Social Security benefits. Treasury expects automatic payments for Social Security beneficiaries no later than the end of April and automatic payments for SSI recipients no later than early May. We hope this helps.

Coronavirus stimulus checks: Social Security recipients and others receive special alert
While Social Security and other federal benefits recipients will receive their stimulus checks automatically, they must take additional steps by Wednesday ( 04/22/2020) to claim the $500-per-child stimulus bonus.
The Internal Revenue Service issued an alert that these taxpayers need to use the ‘Non-filers’ tool to claim their child if they haven’t filed taxes for 2018 or 2019.
Social Security and other benefits recipients who haven’t filed taxes in the last two years will receive their automatic payment at the end of April. But this payment won’t include the additional $500 if they don’t provide the information to the IRS by Wednesday, April 22, at 12:00 p.m. EDT, the IRS said.
“If the IRS does not receive this essential information by Wednesday, their payment will be $1,200 and the $500 per child will be paid to them with a return filing for tax year 2020,” Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement.
Those who would like to receive the money faster will need to provide the IRS with the following information:
Full names and Social Security numbers, including for spouse and child dependents
Mailing address
Bank account type, account and routing numbers (leave blank if you receive your benefits through Direct Express)
The deadline applies only to those receiving Social Security retirement, survivor or disability benefits, or Railroad Retirement benefits recipients. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and veterans benefit recipients will have until a later date to provide this additional information, according to the Treasury.

You only have to do this if you are claiming a child right??

My daughters 19 yrs old & receives SSI due to being disabled. Will she get her own stimulus check? I claimed her on my 2019 tax return but my stimulus payment didn’t include her. How do I find out if she is eligible for the stimulus payment?
Terri
No you won’t. If you claimed her on your taxes unfortunately she will not get the $1200 and you won’t get $500 because of her age

What I would like to find out is this; I am receiving SSI and SSD, and my husband filed our taxes jointly ( like he has been doing for years). We don’t have any income per se, but he files our taxes nonetheless. Am I entitled to 2 checks since I am on SSI and SSD. 1 for being a couple who file taxes and another since I receive SSI and SSD?

Hi Dee, thank you for your question. Check out the Economic Impact Payments Information Center under calculating the economic impact payment amount. Hopefully this helps.

No, you will get one payment per your social security number.

I was wanting to know if my mom draws social security and I claimed her for the first time this year (we were told by our tax prep person this is what we should do) will she still get her stimulus money in her account like she does her payments.
Frances M.
Nope. If you claim here she will not get the check.

All you have to do is call your bank and tell them that you need your bank routing number so your stimulus payment can be direct deposited into your checking account. They will help you.
