Supplemental Security Income Recipients Will Receive Automatic COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

The Treasury Department announced that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department.  Treasury anticipates these automatic payments to go out no later than early May.

SSI recipients with no qualifying children do not need to take any action in order to receive their $1,200 economic impact payment. The payments will be automatic.

SSI recipients who have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should now go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info section to provide their information. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If SSI beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait until later to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

This is great news for SSI recipients, and I want to remind recipients with qualifying children to go to IRS.gov soon so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for. I also want to thank the dedicated employees of the Treasury Department, Social Security, and the Internal Revenue Service for making this happen and working non-stop on this issue.

SSI Recipients with Dependent Children Should Still Go To IRS.gov to Provide Their Information

Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries (who don’t normally file taxes) will also qualify for automatic payments of $1,200 from Treasury. These payments are anticipated to start arriving around the end of April.

The Treasury Department, not Social Security, will make these automatic payments to beneficiaries. Recipients will generally receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their SSI or Social Security benefits.

For those SSI and Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, with dependent children, who use Direct Express debit cards, additional information will be available soon regarding the steps to take when claiming children under 17, on the IRS website.

Please note that the agency will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

For more information about Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, please see our most recent blog.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found on the IRS website. In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.

Will ALL Social Security recipients receive COVID-19 Economic Impact payments or will adjusted gross income be taken into account? I had already filed our 2019 tax return, but our AGI was too high based on 401K and IRA withdrawals as I retired in mid-2019 and wanted cash to pay for our retirement home. Otherwise, we would have qualified in both 2018 and 2019. Now, in 2020, our combined income is even lower. I feel penalized for having file our 2019 tax return too soon.

        Hi Vonda,
Thank you for your response. I have read over the information on the IRS web site many times and it is not clear when it comes to my specific situation as noted above. I am a retiree as of June 1, 2019 and have been receiving social security benefits since that time. However, I worked the first half of 2019 and withdrew taxable 401K and IRA funds as noted. If I had not filed my 2019 tax return, I would have definitely received the stimulus money based on my 2018 tax return. The 401K and IRA withdrawals inflated my adjusted gross income in 2019 and my wife and I would not be eligible for the relief money as a result, unless ALL social security recipients as of 2019 will receive the benefit.

Given the above, should we expect to get the money or are we out of luck based on the 2019 tax return?

        Thank you,
        Paul

    • ssdi i.

YOU SHOLD EXPECT NOT TO GET THE STIMULUS CHECK FOR A FEW WEEKS. THIS PLANDEMIC IS A TARGETED ATTACK ON PEOPLE ON SSA AND NEED THE MONEY TO SURVIVE. THATS WHY WE ARENR BEING PAID UNTIL ATLEAST MAY. THEY WANT AS MANY OF US AS POSSIBLE TO GET SICK AND DIE. THATS WHY IM PREDICTING THAT MOST OF US WILL HAVE WILL HAVE CHECKS MAILED IN EARLY MAY AND THOSE CHECKS WILL TAKE A LONG TIME TO HIT MAIL BOXES. SO IM SETTING YOUR EXPECTATIONS TO MID TO LATE MAY. THERE IS NO HOPE THAT YOU WILL RECEIVE ANYTHING IN APRIL AT ALL SO DO NOT BELIEVE THE SSA REPS ON HERE THAT TELL YOU ITS COMING LATE APRIL. THEY ARE LYING. IF THEY HAD AN ACTUAL DATE THEY WOULD HAVE PUBLISHED IT ALREADY, GOD BLESS YOU AND TRY TO CONSERVE YOUR RESOURCES AND STAY AS ISOLATED AS YOU CAN BECAUSE THIS VIRUS SPECIFICALLY IS A DEATH SENTENCE FOR PEOPLE LIKE US AND NO ONE CARES. THEY WILL LET YOU DIE IN AGONY IN A HOSPITAL CELL, REFUSE YOUR FAMILY TO VISIT YOU OR SAY THEIR GOODBYES , BURN YOUR CORPSE AND THROW IT IN MASS GRAVES FILLED WITH OTHER OLD DISPOSABLE PEOPLE. BE VERY CAREFUL, MINDFUL AND AWARE BECAUSE THIS IS A WAR ON ELDERS AND WE ARE BEING PURPOSELY LEFT OUT OF THE STIMULUS MONEY AS LONG AS POSSIBLE TO KILL AS MANY OF US AS POSSIBLE.

      • Kim

Everyday with you. I wasnt going to say anything but why the heck are you on this blog. You are always negative and you type like you are screaming. If you cant help anyone keep your negative mouth shut. It’s people like you that make our suicide rates go up in the country. If you cant help shut the hell up and mind your business.

        • Sean

Shut up hes right. He is not trying to be negative. He is letdown and sho should u b e. Dont have blind faith dont be a sheep.
He is right even of he is being a little bit dramatic.
u say to mind his own business???? Well it is his buisness. He is on disability and needs t he money to survive these times.

If u dont like him ignore him. No one forces u to read his posts.
People have a right to be letdown and pissed off right now. He has a right to express his frustrations.

          • Kim

It’s a waiting game with the government so do what you been doing best and wait everybody is.

      • Rob

You must be miserable lol…. anyways my inside sources “google” are saying next week

        • Kim

It will come when it comes. Miserable never. We got a check at the beginning of the month we can wait.

    • V.V.

Hi Sam, thank you for your question. Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17 do not need to take any action with the IRS. You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS. You should receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as you would normally receive your Social Security benefits. Treasury expects automatic payments for Social Security beneficiaries no later than the end of April and automatic payments for SSI recipients no later than early May. We hope this helps.

my fiance claimed my kids on her stimulus but her payment is pending at 1200 instead of 2200 for her and our kids they are also on ssi is this why and will the 500 for each go to the card she receives ssi for them on instead

    • Terri

She won’t get $500 for the kids cause the kids are underage collecting SSI. Kids underage who receive SSI will not get $1200 or $500.

      • Sarah

Where does it say that? I’ve read through everything and it doesn’t say that anywhere I can see.

    • V.V.

Hi Richard, thanks for using our blog. People who receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability insurance benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, and who have qualifying children under age 17 and those receiving SSI who have qualifying children under age 17 need to go to the IRS’s webpage instead of waiting for the automatic $1,200 Economic Impact Payment. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about you and your qualifying children, you will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to your $1,200 individual payment.

      • Victoria

So if you are on ssdi and no depends and you don’t file taxes you don’t have to do any thing . The stimulus check will be deposited on my direct express card correct??

  5. Amber l.

Hurry up and wait this is a very frustrating ordeal right now and being disabled and having anxiety as is makes this so much worse yes we all need the money but it doesn’t mean we have to be evil to one another life is to short I hope everyone stays safe and gets there money and soon gets back to our new reality god bless us all

  6. Yuliana J.

Will my child who has SSI qualify for the stimulus check??

Seriously? I know myself and I’m positive thousands of others have done exactly what you just recommend. There are no answers on either the IRS or the SSA website…everything is unbelievably confusing and vague…”what does early May mean?” or “sometime in the near future” or ” in the next round”..my god, cant you just give people an exact date! so we can plan our next MEAL! The IRS economic impact payment information center….more like the LACK OF INFORMATION center. I filled out the “non-filers” form weeks ago, now we dont have to…so now what? most likely the system is so confused by those who did what we were told to do “non-filers” and those who didn’t. really??????? we cant do better than this?

  7. Nunya

Here it is 4/21 and still no payment and still no information in the system to see when I’ll get it. This is getting a little ridiculous.. slews of people on edge and nerves shot waiting for money they desperately need to help support themselves and their families and still getting it up the ass from the govt.. smh

  8. TheTruth

If anyone can go over to New York Times.com or Wall Street Journal.com and tell them what’s going on I myself just emailed New York Times.com then we might just get picked up for a story and if this gets into the media then that would be real pressure on those who could get you your money faster this place in this blog are not going to get you your money faster and they’re definitely not going to reach those who are in power

    • Medvet

Um…your a little late there…its been in news for awhile now lol its simple…people need money.. all want it.. and most shall get it. People are getting privilage checked and are simply not liking it. We have until noon wed. To update for children so…if you havent updated it under non filer, you will have to wait but the 1200 will be sent regardless by end of april. If 12 noon wed is deadline im guessing they will start to send out payment to direct express thurs meaning some may get by this friday, some before, some after. Just gotta wait? and learn what it means to humble smh

  9. Mrs. M.

Will I be notified if I will receive my son’s father’s stimulus check due to back support? If so, when?

    • Gerald H.

That’s more of a question for the IRS

      • Natalie

I think it is really unfair that if you are a ssi recipient and someone filed you on your taxes that you can’t get your 1,200 check. It is like they are punishing all the ssi recipients for something that was done before this started.
Just like parents who have kids 17 or older they don’t get nothing for them their this stimulus payment, and if they are also disabled they can’t get their own stimulus check of 1,200 automatically for being a ssi recipient because they were filed on someone else taxes.. so either way they go they get nothing. Something isn’t right nor fair about that. I thought they were trying to help everyone who is struggling. But that isn’t the case.

  10. Mrs. M.

I have a 17 yr old who receives SSI. Will he receive a stimulus check due to him receiving SSI?
