Supplemental Security Income Recipients Will Receive Automatic COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: February 21, 2023
The Treasury Department announced that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department. Treasury anticipates these automatic payments to go out no later than early May.
SSI recipients with no qualifying children do not need to take any action in order to receive their $1,200 economic impact payment. The payments will be automatic.
SSI recipients who have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should now go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info section to provide their information. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If SSI beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait until later to receive their $500 per qualifying child.
This is great news for SSI recipients, and I want to remind recipients with qualifying children to go to IRS.gov soon so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for. I also want to thank the dedicated employees of the Treasury Department, Social Security, and the Internal Revenue Service for making this happen and working non-stop on this issue.
SSI Recipients with Dependent Children Should Still Go To IRS.gov to Provide Their Information
Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries (who don’t normally file taxes) will also qualify for automatic payments of $1,200 from Treasury. These payments are anticipated to start arriving around the end of April.
The Treasury Department, not Social Security, will make these automatic payments to beneficiaries. Recipients will generally receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their SSI or Social Security benefits.
For those SSI and Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, with dependent children, who use Direct Express debit cards, additional information will be available soon regarding the steps to take when claiming children under 17, on the IRS website.
Please note that the agency will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.
For more information about Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, please see our most recent blog.
The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found on the IRS website. In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.

I’m on disability too and by the time I pay what bills I owe and then have to pay rent, lights, food, and other necessities I have no money to last me through the month. And still haven’t received my covid 19 check. First it was March then April now may. You can’t win for loosing. But one thing is for sure we serve a mighty God and I know without a doubt in my mind that he will take care of us in the name of Savior Jesus. Thank the Lord we’re still surviving this viras.
Mel A.
Thank you Social Security for taking especially good care of us during these trying times
D D.
First, it was March, then April, and now early May.
Next week it will be June. How come our government can push things out but as a consumer we have to pay state and federal on time. Something is wrong here.

I totally agree we are in a Crisis here & we are the low income why do we have to keep waiting & getting put off it seems a little Prejudice to me we are still apart of America suffering too & need that extra help just as much as people who work small & large businesses we can barely make it with no pandemic going on I just feel we as considered the poor is being treated unfairly here

I have been getting direct deposit social security since 2006…today the IRS took the money I owed for taxes before 3am but no covid19 check, Really discouraging
Diana
If you OWE the Federal Government money, or if you OWE child support…you will NOT get a stimulus check. Your check will go to those you owe and if there’s anything left over after paying your debt, then they will send that to you.
Cara J.
This is not true it does not matter who you owe you get the whole stimulus check they wont touch it
Deleana M.
that answer was wrong, if you owe back child support the stimulus check goes to the people you owe child support to, you will not get that check.
Belinda
They(being the President/our governing agencies/Congress/ect….) have been asked to do a ???(just had a senior ?moment)can’t think of the word!asked the people/student loans/child support ect….. To put the debt collection/garnishing/(straight out taking it ) on hold til I think Aug. /Sept. Of 2020,because basically most of us? are in the same boat(figuratively speaking that is!)
Bobbie
That’s true if you own government they wont take it.you get a check.
courtney c.
to all those who owe child support for being a bum im sorry

You don’t know everyone’s situation, welfare queen.
Michael
LOL stupidest thing i just read. How long did it take you to make that nonsense up. LOL
Deborah E.
I’d hate to think you are speaking about what I posted concerning CARES ACT for STudents, if so, then if I made it up, the lady on the phone I spoke with at my school made it up. I dont have time for foolishness.
Deborahdebor
exactly what post are you speaking of???

I’m on disability but have not heard anything about my stimulus check. I know that my husband and I file jointly and have to pay in. Not receiving answers anywhere !
John D.
You both will get $2400 the end of this month direct deposit or check how ever you get your money now it will come same way with stimulus hold in there be safe and stay home as much as you can. This covid hasn’t even begun.
Shaun
Married couples receive $2400 as a couple, not each one.

I filled out the IRS filler form and have no dependents to get my check that is what I thought we had to do now they are saying we get it automatically will that mess up my chances of getting my Check
Rese
What if you filed the non filer on the irs website and put in a different direct deposit information before it was announced that ssi recipients don’t have to do anything. Which account will it be deposited in?
Me
I was filed and just found out about I’m 29 on SSI will I still get a sitmulas check

If I am the representative payee for an adult son, will the $1200 go on the Direct Express card?
Jerolee O.
Thank you for the information.
Sara K.
What if we were claimed as a dependent? As an adult? We’re screwed. Something should be made available to those of us who were claimed by someone else. Please???? It’s not fair that every other adult gets a check except for this small percentage of 40 something year olds who were claimed by someone else.
cynthia g.
I agree i only got carried by my son to try and get extra money to get me a cheep car cause i have copd and cant walk far….
Michael W.
Well at 40 years old you should be claiming yourself
Sara K.
I don’t file taxes so I don’t claim myself. I pay half the bills. I get $589. Would my mom share her $1200? Hell no.
Cathy
I don’t think legally your mom can count you as a dependent unless she adds the amount you draw to her income taxes I would check into that since you pay half the bills is she your payee to you should call the IRS and find out if what she is doing is legal
Francine
I received my SS check the other day will I still get my stimulas check too
Charles H.
You will still get the stimulus check. Some people have already gotten their stimulus check that is on social security or SSI.
Fred m.
I’m on ssi,but my sister is my payee, her name is on the bank account, not mine,I get direct deposit, will the stimulus’ check still come for me ,in her account?
Michelle
And that isn’t true, because college students in their 20’s who are claimed as dependents won’t get anything and neither will the parents because they are over 17!
Juliet
Do social security have to file are they going to get a check
Deborah E.
where that might be true, let’s not forget about what has been signed for college students across the country we will be getting funds from the school because of the pandemic, for materials , food, housing etc I spoke to someone who caused me to go to the internet and look it up, the lady was from the Bursars office, and she just threw that in, before I hung up, after we were done talking about the issue I initially called about, so if anybody is in school, and someone has claimed you, or for some other reason it seems you wont be getting anything, Dont sweat it, I think dont quote me,,, I repeat I think this money will go out next week Look it up yourselves if it applies to you Being a college student that is),, Oh and you have to search the internet for the right information, look for the CARES ACT for college students
Let me now if your in college and already knew about it, or searched and found it..

I’m in the same boat. I’m 38, on SSI and my parents claimed me because I’m living with them right now. So now I’m screwed out of my stimulus check. It’s not fair. I still have bills to pay, I still have to eat. My car needs repairs. We are one of the most vulnerable groups in America and we get screwed. FIX THIS AMERICA! FIX THIS RIGHT NOW.
Terri
Um. Why can’t you eat? Utilities are due the same day every month. You eat and pay bills then don’t you? Calm down. Be happy you get a free @1200 which is more than you get on SSDI. I get SSDI (the bigger bucks)

Some situations are just very hard to figure out.I am my adult sons payee and he doesnot reside with me.I am my grand daughters payee and she has resided with me since birth.I have a direct experss for each of them.I was approved last year for SSI and have a bank acct. My sons GF claimed him on her taxes against his will, just this last year.I had to break the news to him that he would get no stim. His GF has been fraudulently claiming my grandchild every year for 8 years.I now have a fraud report form to fill out and send but this will be a long investigation. The GF has recieved her 1200(even though she wotlrked just enough to be able to do a tax each year)and has recieved the 500 for a child thats never resided with her 6 months or any months.Im hoping my stim reaches my bank BUT idk if 500 will be entered onto my grand daughters direct express.I have decided to not go the computer dependant, input route because idk if what has been so wrongly done would throw the computers off.The SSA system has our information stored correctly.Im not sure how the GF slips through the cracks but this Covid and my form will bring it to an end.Can I inquire as to if my grand will recieve her assistance in the form which it normally comes(based on SSA records)or am I needing to budget very tightly for lil M and I?There is worry about SS fraud but I can easily say that Tax fraud is a rampant problem.Especially among the disabled.TY JS

What about disabled people waiting for a decision on there Disability claim? Will claims still be determined be issued COVID19 checks?
John D.

So I’m on SSI with the direct express card. No dependents but I filled out the no file form last Friday because SSA told us to. So now what? I guess the money will go on direct express? I surely don’t wanna wait for a check
michael j.
wait u wait for a check away u didnt need to file one because your on SSI
Roger
years ago when the gov asked everyone to sign up for DD some didnt trust the systems they were scared and old fashion adn wanted a live check. Thats why so many have to wait until they get thier check in the mail.
Juliet
Do social security have to file are they going to get a check
Michelle R.
You do not have to file anything if you have no dependents.
Sdoyle85
If my child’s father gets SSI (not SSDI) and is behind on child’s support, will I get the money or him.? I’m not sure which program can’t be touched .
