Supplemental Security Income Recipients Will Receive Automatic COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

The Treasury Department announced that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department.  Treasury anticipates these automatic payments to go out no later than early May.

SSI recipients with no qualifying children do not need to take any action in order to receive their $1,200 economic impact payment. The payments will be automatic.

SSI recipients who have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should now go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info section to provide their information. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If SSI beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait until later to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

This is great news for SSI recipients, and I want to remind recipients with qualifying children to go to IRS.gov soon so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for. I also want to thank the dedicated employees of the Treasury Department, Social Security, and the Internal Revenue Service for making this happen and working non-stop on this issue.

SSI Recipients with Dependent Children Should Still Go To IRS.gov to Provide Their Information

Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries (who don’t normally file taxes) will also qualify for automatic payments of $1,200 from Treasury. These payments are anticipated to start arriving around the end of April.

The Treasury Department, not Social Security, will make these automatic payments to beneficiaries. Recipients will generally receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their SSI or Social Security benefits.

For those SSI and Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, with dependent children, who use Direct Express debit cards, additional information will be available soon regarding the steps to take when claiming children under 17, on the IRS website.

Please note that the agency will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

For more information about Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, please see our most recent blog.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found on the IRS website. In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.

Hello, I need some help here. First question will an adult who is 21 and permanently disabled and receives disability still get the stimulus check? I have 2 children under 17 who receive disability and I am their payee. Will their $500 dependent amount be sent to their card? My husband and I don’t work and don’t file taxes because we are their caretakers. Will I have to use the non filer tool to claim them as dependents even though we don’t file taxes? They both have receive their disability benefits on the same direct express card, but they both have different account numbers. If I have to use the non filers tool how would i do that when it ask for only one account number? Also since my husband and I are the caretakers will our stimulus go on their card or will I have to use the non filers tool and have them send us a paper check? They have a little brother who doesn’t receive any type of benefits would I have to add him to mine and my husbands if we have to use the non filers tool or can I have it set to come to the direct express card we have?

My husband just qualified for SSDI in March with payments coming June 10th. I filed 2018 taxes and I owed the IRS and is reflective on their site .I filed electronically and never sent paper forms in. However it showing that I filed and owed.
My question is,; is the fact that my husband has qualified for SSDI (even if no $ pd yet) affect when we will received our stimulus checks?

Hi Maria, thank you for your question. New beneficiaries since January 1, 2020, of either Social Security or SSI benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, should go to the IRS’s Non-Filers website to enter information. The IRS online tool guide may also be helpful to determine next steps. Hopefully this is helpful.

    • V.V.

Hi Stacy, thank you for using our blog. Individuals receiving SSI and Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, with dependent children, who use Direct Express debit cards, will receive additional information soon regarding the steps to take on the IRS website when claiming children under 17. We hope this helps.

I receive both a federal disability retirement payment and SSDI each month. Because of the federal disability retirement payment, I file a tax return each year. I have already received my stimulus payment, however, because I also receive SSDI each month will SSA pay a stimulus payment as well? I do not want to risk being overpaid and then have to pay back.

    • V.V.

Hi Andri, thank you for your question. It is Treasury, not Social Security, that is making the economic income payments. Please visit the IRS page for details on the Coronavirus Tax Relief and Economic Impact Payments . Hopefully this helps.

Can someone PLEASE PLEASE help me. My stepdad is on social security and DOES file taxes each year. I went to the IRS website and it says they cannot determine eligibility and payment status is not available. I read everywhere that social security people who DONT normally file will get their money at the end of the month, beginning of May and that the IRS where is my payment doesnt work because he’s technically on social security even though he DID file taxes. My parents were really counting on that money. Can someone please confirm if the above is correct? Even though he DOES file taxes and is on social security, he is eligible and most likely his “payment status” doesnt show on the IRS website for this reason. Please Please Help. Any input would be appreciated.

    • V.V.

Hi Brenda, thank you for your question. Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17 do not need to take any action with the IRS. They will automatically receive their $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS. They should receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their Social Security benefits. We hope this helps!

That may be the message the treasury is pushing but hasn’t it dawned on SSA yet something’s wrong … they’re telling y’all they’re paying us BUT WE AREN’T GETTING IT. I’m ON SSDI and get yearly ssa1099 statements … still no stimulus payment on my direct express card. Doesn’t anyone at SSA even care … hundreds of us on here, and NONE OF US GOT A STIMULUS PAYMENT though treasury says they sent it yesterday. I’ve got .51 cents to my name and no food. Maybe trump will share his lobster dinner with me tonight, or at least some crumbs from his table perhaps.

        • V.V.

Hi Ron. Treasury expects automatic payments for Social Security beneficiaries no later than the end of April and automatic payments for SSI recipients no later than early May.

Hello I’m juliana please help! I am on ssi and was claimed as dependent on my moms taxes she filed head of household, but she did not receive any funding/ extra money for claiming me. I do not file taxes . I filled out the non filers form and checked the box that states I was claimed as a dependent on someone’s taxes. My non filers form was still approved immediately. I am just waiting to be eligible it says approved but to wait for eligibility. Does this mean I will receive the $1200. Please help! I am being told that since I was claimed and I am 24 I won’t get anything. This can’t be right because I receive SSI , and do not file taxes…. so why wouldn’t I be eligible??? Everyone else that receives SSI is receiving payments. So just because I was claimed and the person that claimed me DID NOT RECEIVE ANY TYPE OF FUNDING FOR CLAIMING ME…. I wouldn’t be eligible? That doesn’t make sense and they do not clarify on the IRS website about this topic AT ALL. the fair thing to do would be for people in my situation should qualify for the Refund stimulus. Being that my representative payee that claimed me did not get any money so why wouldn’t I receive the $1200???? I need answers badddd Help!

Understand if your mother claimed you as a dependent as head of household she received more deductions to lower her taxes and earned income money on you that is why your having the problem your having

YEP JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE GOING 46 MPH IN A 45 MPH SPEED LIMIT ZONE YOU GET A TICKET JULIANNA. IT IS CALLED THE LETTER OF THE LAW. YOU GET CLAIMED YOU DONT GET THE STIMULUS. IT IS REALLY NOT COMPLICATED.
IT DOESNT MATTER WHETHER YOU ARE 24 RECEIVING SSI OR 84 RECEIVING IT IF YOU ARE CLAIMED YOU LOSE YOUR STIMULUS MONEY.
WHICH MAKES SENSE BECAUSE IF YOU ARE LIVING WITH FAMILY AND ARE DEPENDENT ON THEM TO SURVIVE AND WOULD BE HOMELESS WITHOUT THEM YOU ARE DEPENDENT ON THEM AND THEY DESERVE THE STIMULUS AND YOU JUST DONT DESERVE IT ACCORDING TO THIS LAW. STOP DWELLING ON IT AND LET IT GO. ANYONE ON HERE WHO TELLS YOU ANYTHING DIFFERENT IS LYING TO YOU BECAUSE ITS LITERALLY ONE OF THE ONLY WAYS TO BE AN ADULT AND NOT GET IT IS TO BE CLAIMED AS A DEPENDENT.
I KNOW IT SUCKS BUT AT LEAST YOU ARE YOUNG AND CAN USE THIS AS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE BECAUSE OTHER THAN THAT YOU WONT BE AWARDED ANYTHING. LEAST OF ALL A STIMULUS CHECK. GOD BLESS. THERE WAS NO WAY YOUR MOM COULD KNOW BUT YEA ITS THE KISS OF DEATH TO BE AN ADULT AND BE CLAIMED. KISS THAT $1200 GOODBYE AND FOCUS ON SOMETHING PRODUCTIVE KIDDO.

Do you realize who you are talking to? Know your audience. Enough with the Caps. She gets SSI most likely because she is Intellectually Disabled and you are treating her like she is a dumb ass. Look in the mirror!

We will not get anything it seems. I havent even lived with my parents this year. Started living on my own and paying own bills Jan 1st. Last year I did though so they claimed me. So because of my living situation LAST year, I get nothing. Meanwhile all the people i know are buying new phones, game systems, etc with the money. I wouldve paid off my credit card and fixed my truck. Wouldve helped me immensely.

Where is my $1,200.00 at and you people lie about it this past Monday and this past Wednesday and you people probably lying about it today to get it thru your guys by direct deposit

  9. Ashley

What if only your children are receiving Ssi ? Will they receive the payment? Or how does that work ?

    • ssdi i.

NO YOUR CHILDREN RECEIVING SSI DONT GET ANY MONEY BECAUSE THEY ARE DEPENDENTS AND DONT NEED $1200 AS IF THEY WERE AN ADULT TRYING TO SURVIVE. WOW SOME OF YOU PEOPLE ARE JUST GREEDY AND ITS A DAMN SHAME THAT AMERICA LETS YOU ALL TREAT CHILDREN LIKE A PAYCHECK. BUT ANYHOW GOD BLESS YOU AND KEEP PUMPING OUT BABIES YOU CANT AFFORD AND MAKE EVERYONE ELSE PAY FOR IT. PUT THE MAN ON CHILD SUPPORT AND THE GOVERNMENT WHILE YOU ARE AT IT IF YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH IT. SOME OF WOMEN NEED TO GO TO PRISON OR FACE FORCED STERILIZATION. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!
