Social Security Launches Redesigned Website at SSA.gov
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: November 2, 2023
Starting today, visitors to SSA.gov will experience a fresh homepage and a new design to help them find what they need more easily.
“SSA.gov is visited by over 180 million people per year and it is one of our most important tools for providing efficient and equitable access to service,” said Kilolo Kijakazi, Acting Commissioner of the Social Security Administration. “Whether providing service in person or online, our goal is to help people understand what they may qualify for and seamlessly transition them to an application process.” Improved self-service capability allows people to skip calling or visiting an office, which helps Social Security staff focus on those visitors who need in-person assistance.
Reimagined website prioritizes customer experience
Part of ongoing efforts to improve how the public can do business with the agency, the redesign is intended to provide a clear path to the tasks customers need to accomplish. Many of the most visited sections of SSA.gov are now live with a more user-friendly and task-based approach. New pages and improvements based on public feedback will continue to be unveiled in the coming months.
Visitors to SSA.gov can use interactive tools to:
Check eligibility for benefits
The new benefit eligibility screener is a convenient and simple way for people to learn if they might be eligible for benefits.
Save time on Social Security Number (SSN) and card online services
If a person loses their SSN card, they may not need a replacement. In most cases, simply knowing their SSN is enough. If a person does need a replacement card, they may be able to request it online by visiting our Social Security Number and Card page. Individuals can also start an application for an updated card or request an SSN for the first time. People may never need to visit an office and, if they do need to visit an office to complete the application, they will save a lot of time by starting online.
Start an application for Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
People can start the application process online and request an appointment to apply for SSI benefits by answering a few questions on our SSI page.
Apply for Social Security benefits and other online services
For most benefits, people can apply online or start an application online. In many cases, there are no forms to sign. The agency will review the application and reach out with questions or for more information. Visit our Online Services page to apply for retirement, disability, or Medicare.
Many Social Security services do not require the public to take time to visit an office. Using a my Social Security account, a personalized online service, people can start or change direct deposit, or request a replacement SSA-1099. For individuals already receiving Social Security benefits, they can print or download a current Benefit Verification Letter if they need proof of their benefits.
People not yet receiving benefits can use their online account to get a personalized Social Security Statement, which provides their earnings information as well as estimates of their future benefits. The portal also includes a retirement calculator and links to information about other online services. The agency encourages people without a my Social Security account to create one today on our website.

This is outrageous, “We cannot process your request at this time” for days. My wife applied 5 weeks ago for retirement starting Feb. She is visually disabled, yet we have no way of checking the status of her application which should have ready been approved. Requesting call backs does not appear to be working. As she works at a hospital, she cannot sit on hold for hours awaiting an answer.
Two questions:
1) When is this going to be resolved? Anyone retiring has additional concerns such as insurance that are tied to “Approval”.
2) What is being done to help those retiring shortly as they cannot check statuses or see requests for additional information?
My next step is a Congressional complaint into this matter as we are in limbo.

Hi, Richard. We are sorry to hear about your wife’s experience. For her security, we do not have access to private information in this venue. We encourage her to continue to work with her local Social Security office. She can ask to speak to a manager on her next call or visit. She can also submit feedback by visiting our Contact Social Security page. Once there, select the “Email Us” link. This will take you to the “Email A Question to our Support Team” form where you can complete and submit a compliment, complaint, or suggestion. We hope this is resolved soon.

I cannot seem to get through to my local office, Port Orange FL to make an appointment to report earnings, as my previous representative’s extension no longer exists!! I need to report slight 2022 earnings where my employer does not have check stubs.
This has been more than challenging and I need immediate attention.

Yes. I have the same problem. I wanted to start collecting in September after 48 years of paying into SSA, I get your payments are deferred because you worked. So I guess only people who don’t pay into SSA get to collect. They also do not let you know how much more you will receive if you are ever able to collect.

I have been trying to obtain information on “my Social Security” for a week now. It gives me access to the home page after signing in, appears to download a file onto my Mac that is titled my HubUi, then supplies me with a text file titled “unknown” with zero content. How can I obtain a SSI benefit report for the new amount with the COLA increase and medicare deduction, etc. for 2023?
Lynn V.
By the way, I am currently reaching a hold time of one hour now on your 1-800 telephone help line. No one is answering.

I have a similar issue as the above. I put my user name, password, and code in and it goes directly into a download file which is not visible to me.

Can’t get prior years 1099 forms. PERIOD. Who every created the website, seriously didn’t make it convenient. Social Security Cards are even worse. Can’t get them easily, even with a VERIFIED account. So Sad

it seems there is a major issue accessing the newly designed website from Mac laptops. For the many people getting blank screens, empty downloaded files, or not even able to log in and getting the message “We cannot process your request at this time. Please try again later” it doesn’t really help asking us all to call the Help Desk. It just adds to our frustration staying on hold for inordinate amounts of time without any resolution.
If the system works on our iPhones what does it say for your Quality Testing?
Furthermore, for the many retired IT professionals frustrated by these problems, we can only shake our heads and wonder how long it will take before this is resolved…..
You’ve touted this new website – now Is it too much to ask you to acknowledge these issues, and more importantly – when they might be rectified?
