Social Security Benefits to Increase in 2018

When we announce the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), there’s usually an increase in the Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefit amount people receive each month. Federal benefit rates increase when the cost of living rises, as measured by the Department of Labor’s Consumer Price Index (CPI-W).
The CPI-W rises when prices increase, making your cost of living go up. This means prices for goods and services, on average, are a little more expensive. The COLA helps to offset these costs. As a result, more than 66 million Americans will see a 2.0 percent increase in their Social Security and SSI benefits in 2018.
Other changes that will happen in January 2018 are based on the increase in the national average wage index. For example, the maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security payroll tax will increase to $128,700. The earnings limit for workers younger than “full” retirement age will increase to $17,040 and the limit for people turning “full” retirement age in 2018 will increase to $45,360.

It’s mid-2018 and that paltry COLA hasn’t helped at all. Medicare Plan increase $24.00 a month. Rent increase for August $32.00 per month. Prescriptions: Each generic now $3.35 each last year was 0. Markets (like Vons) increasing food and products $1 – $2 frequently. Require you to purchase 4 items to get a lower price (even bath tissue). The same at CVS Pharmacy. $1 – $2 continually. Stopped buying some products. Starting to have to travel to locate lower prices. They finally started a Lyft service program in Santa Monica which took months of waiting. Before it was a six-day wait to schedule a ride in Santa Monica only. Need to get a Smart Phone to deal with technology. That will be another monthly fee. No vacations. Affordable housing very limited. Not doing enough to create more affordable units. Mr. Trump wants us to become homeless!

Hello Daryl. Social Security retirement and disability benefits are not based on the state the person lives. Those benefits are based on earnings. When you move, you can report your change of address online, using your my Social Security account.
The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program is a needs based program that pays benefits to disabled adults and children who have limited income and resources. SSI amounts could be different depending on where an individual lives since some states provide supplemental payments. Your local Social Security office will provide more details when you report your change of address. Thanks!
