Where on the website to I apply for my ex husbands social security. He already receives SSI because he’s 69. I’m 65 and would like to apply for my portion since we were married for 17 years. Can I do this online or do I need to make an appointment in person?

I’d like to know how I can get a copy of my employment history.

  5. Hattie H.

My name is Hattie H. Thompson Small and I am 84 years old. In 1994 I suffered a major stroke and could no longer work. At the time when I suffered the stroke, I was working for The Department of education in Washington, D.C., though I had not earned enough quarters in order to qualify for social security disability. I’ve tried numerous times, applying for social security benefits, though I’m always told, I do not have enough quarters in order to qualify for social security payments. A large portion of my life I’d lived on the farm in Rock Hill, S.C. where I did not pay social security. I’ve tried with getting a portion of my husband’s social security benefits payments but I wasn’t allowed to do so. I’ve visited the social security office numerous time, but to no avail. I desperately need some help. Please contact me by mail or by telephone at: 1660 40th Street, SE, Washington, D.C. 20020, telephone: (202) 575-4083. Many thanks, Hattie H. Thompson Small.

Hello Hattie, some individuals may be eligible to receive social services from the state in which they live. These services include Medicaid, free meals, housekeeping help, transportation or help with other problems. You can get information about services in your area from your state or local social services or welfare office. Or you can visit the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services web page for more information.
      We hope this information helps!

My husband is at retirement age, he still works full time. Someone told me I can get social security from him working, not his ss monies. Can someone tell me about this. I will be 60 in 2 months. Not sure if my age matters He lives in another state.

    • Ray F.

Hi Kathy, even if you have never worked under Social Security, you may be able to get spouse’s retirement benefits if you are at least 62 years of age and your spouse is receiving retirement or disability benefits.
      Hope this information helps!
