Save Time Applying for SNAP and SSI
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: October 21, 2021
The COVID-19 pandemic continues to impose hardships, especially on people who face barriers to our services and benefits. We want you to know about other benefits you may be entitled to receive. This includes the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program – or SNAP.
SNAP is a federal program – run by state agencies – that helps people with low-income purchase nutritious food.
When you apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you can also apply for SNAP. If you and everyone in your household are applying for or already receive SSI payments, Social Security will:
- Help you complete the SNAP application by phone. Call us toll-free at 1-800-772-1213 or at our TTY number, 1-800-325-0778, if you’re deaf or hard of hearing.
- Help you complete the application in person if you have a scheduled appointment.
- Mail you a SNAP application if you request one by phone.
- Send the completed application to the local SNAP office for you.
All other applicants, including people who apply for or receive only Social Security benefits, should take or send their SNAP application to their local SNAP office. You may also submit your SNAP application online. To find your local SNAP office or apply online, visit the Food and Nutrition Service’s SNAP State Directory of Resources website. You can also call the SNAP information line toll free at 1-800-221-5689.
To see if you’re eligible for SNAP, check out the SNAP Eligibility page. We also encourage you to check out our publication, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Facts, for additional information on the program.
Our efforts align with the President’s mission to address nutrition insecurity for America’s families – and help you secure today and tomorrow. Please share this information with your family and friends – and post it on social media.

is starting to cut back to prepandemic benefits.

Hi Cynthia. Thanks for reaching out. You may be eligible to receive social services from the state in which you live. These services include free meals, housekeeping help, transportation, or help with other problems. You can get information about services in your area from your state or local social services office. You can also visit the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services web page for more information. We hope this is helpful.

If a person is 57 and has applied for SSDI, eligible to apply for SSI. Or, must a person prove they are disabled by SSDI before before applying for SSI.
V.V.
Hi Lee, thanks for using our blog. If you have low income and limited resources, you may be able to receive SSI in addition to monthly Social Security disability benefits. The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program is a needs-based program that pays benefits to disabled adults and children who have limited income and resources. SSI benefits also are payable to people 65 and older without disabilities, who meet the financial limits. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, on the other hand, are based on earnings and are not subject to income and resource limits. For more information on the difference between Social Security disability and SSI, check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page.
If you have additional questions, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance or you can contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. We hope this information helps.

Dear Acting Commissioner Dr. Kilolo Kijakazi:
I subscribed to the President’s newsletter. The President needs to produce an Executive Office of the President FY 22 budget request exactly like the Commissioner must produce a 2021 Annual Report of the Supplemental Security Income Program. The regular budget is too bankrupt to get high, in excess of 3 percent inflation, with every sales person and produce more decadent American Jobs and Families Plans and Build Back Better Frameworks, net worth “community violence initiative”, to leave our 85 percent subsidized preschool children half poor, snot nosed caregivers without hydrocortisone, eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint or salt to help water compete with expensive hospital and nursing home care for Medicare dollars, DC trails obstructed by unfinished union construction jobs, DC trials obstructed by the J. Edgar Hoover Office Building and repeal of OASDI tax loophole to end child poverty by 2024 and all poverty by 2030 neglected. Having been so poorly treated by DC, unless the President nominates me Public Trustee or the agencies pay for my work, I will not conduct another audit of the federal government until after the Appalachian Trail and 2024 election http://www.title24uscode.org/netspend.pdf
Applicant Public Trustee,

The FY 22 Executive Office of the President budget must completely abolish that pseudo-ephedrine Office of National Drug Control Policy.
