I just recently applied for a new social security card because I married and my last name changed. I received my new card but your office printed the wrong number on my card. How do I obtain a new one? I should not have to pay (again) since this is your error. I have been on hold for 41 minutes so far trying to reach someone on the telephone.

    • Vonda

Hi Tara, thanks for using our blog. The Social Security Administration does not charge for a name change on a Social Security card. Please contact your local Social Security office. Look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

Hi, I need to change the date of birth (date only – in real it was 13, but mistakenly is 3 now) of my son. What is the procedure to change it ? How long it takes ? Thanks.

    • Vonda

Hi Dipendra, thanks for using our blog. To correct your son’s date of birth on his Social Security record, you will need to apply for a corrected Social Security card and mail in the application along with required documentation to your local office. All documents must be either originals or certified copies. You will need to provide evidence of your son’s age (for example, a U.S. public birth certificate) and current documentation for evidence of identity. See Learn What Documents You Need for a list of acceptable identity documents. If you do not want to mail in your documents, which will be returned, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen.

  6. Mary B.

I retired in 2017 and am now seeking to return to work. I was told I needed to prove my ability to work in the U.S. by having a ss card. I have misplaced mine due to a recent move and only need to see if I can get an electronic copy to email my future employer. How do I do this today?

    • Vonda

Hi Mary, thank you for using our blog. First, realize you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important. However, if you must get a replacement card, you may be able to apply online. Visit our Social Security Number and Card page to learn how. If you cannot request a replacement card online, call your local office and request that we mail you an SSN printout instead of a replacement Social Security card. Unfortunately, we are unable to process replacement Social Security card requests by phone at this time.

I can’t get my Birth Certificate without a valid Drivers License. Now to replace my Social Security Card you are asking for my Drivers License number and since Covid19, I can’t go in person and it is a viscous circle. WHAT can I do?

Even though it may not be needed much, I still want to get a social security card replacement.

    What is the form number?

Please note I am a brain injury survivor and all this online direction forces my brain to go into overload. I then need to rest for a couple of hours before I can function again.

Please give me the form number and I’ll try to print it out and mail it in.

It has taken me an hour just to find this comment box.
