Can you get a social security card that is laminated, metal or of a more durable material?

    • V.V.

Hi Arletta, thank you for using our blog to ask your question. You do not want to laminate or replicate your Social Security card. Lamination prevents detection of many security features. However, you may cover the card with plastic or other removable material if it does not damage the card.

I rarely read the comments but did today. Some of them seem rather fishy. They need to be deleted.

Hello. I have applied for a social security number for my son since 2013. I never received the card. I moved to another states and changed my address. I sent the new address via online to the social security office but it seems no change occured. How to get my son social security card? Can I go to SS office in any state and get the status of his card or it must be from the state where I applied in the beginning for him to obtain the card.
    Thanks,
    Zena

Hi there. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Typically, after we receive the Social Security card application and verify the documents, you can expect to receive the replacement card in the mail within 10 – 14 business days. Unfortunately, if you have not received the card, you will need to apply again for your son’s card.

See our Frequently Asked Questions web page for information on how to replace a Social Security card for a child. Any chance you could use a plastic card? The paper one is wrecked with its first use!

    • V.V.

Hi Danielle, thank you for using our blog to ask your question. You do not want to laminate or replicate your Social Security card. Lamination prevents detection of many security features. However, you may cover the card with plastic or other removable material if it does not damage the card.

To switch to a different medium is a matter for Congress. While Congress can spend above income limits, individual agencies cannot. It would be a huge and expensive undertaking. As it is, it is not an ID card, but something that will verify your current name and SSN.

Also, the number of times you need you card are few and far apart. Do not carry your card with you normally. It will both prevent wear and not allow you to make it easy for a thief to have your identity handed to them on a silver platter.

Why do you keep sending this out when it is not true, This is what my account says when I look at it. I live in Michigan

We’re sorry. We cannot process your request.
You cannot request a replacement card online.
Please contact your local office if you need a replacement card.

Your citizenship needs to be proven to SSA before you are able to request a Social Security Card through the online service.

Just because someone was born in the U.S. doesn’t mean their citizenship is proven to SSA.

SSA didn’t start keeping track of citizenship until some times in the 1980’s.

Let’s say you were born in 1962 and you only had 1 Social Security card your whole life. Even if you were born in the U.S. you will not have a CSP code of “A” on the record, unless you filed for a replacement card in the 1980’s or later, with the local office.

So go and apply with your local office, they will update your citizenship code to A and THEN the online replacement card will work, because then your citizenship is proven to SSA.
