Social Security Introduces Secure Digital Access to Social Security Numbers
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: April 25, 2025
The Social Security Administration (SSA) is taking steps to provide a significant enhancement for my Social Security account holders, by introducing secure digital access to their Social Security number (SSN). This innovative feature is designed to provide the American public with a modernized, secure, and accessible alternative to the traditional physical SSN card.
SSA is committed to improving service delivery while safeguarding Personal Identifiable Information (PII).
The digital SSN feature will allow account holders to conveniently display their SSN, when needed, for reasons other than handling Social Security matters. This enhancement will provide individuals who have forgotten their SSN or misplaced their SSN cards a simple solution allowing them to securely view their SSN online through the my Social Security portal. This will reduce their need for an in-person visit and/or having to wait to receive their SSN card through the mail. They will be able to access it via my Social Security on their mobile devices. This digital feature not only streamlines the process for those who need their SSN but also reinforces our dedication to protecting sensitive information. By providing a secure digital option, SSA aims to reduce the risk of lost or stolen cards and enhance the overall user experience.
“We are proud to offer this new digital solution to our account holders,” said Lee Dudek, Acting Commissioner. “This enhancement reflects our commitment to providing better service to the public while ensuring that their personal information remains secure. We believe that this modern approach will meet the needs of our constituents in a more efficient manner.”
SSA encourages all account holders to take advantage of this new feature, which will be available starting early this summer. For more information on how to create a my Social Security account, please visit https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/.
Together, we are working to create a more accessible and secure future for all Social Security beneficiaries.

I do not see information on who will have access to this new digital information area. Can you answer this? And, in your reply please provide more specific data than “our partners “. I particularly wish to know if DOGE workers will have such access?

Thank you for this insightful article on the new digital access to Social Security numbers. I found the emphasis on enhancing security measures particularly important in today’s digital age, where identity theft poses significant risks to personal information. Building on the discussion, it’s worth noting that while digital access certainly improves convenience, it also raises concerns about the vulnerability of sensitive data. For instance, the implementation of two-factor authentication (2FA) could serve as an effective way to further protect user access. Additionally, we can look at other government agencies that have successfully adopted secure digital platforms to offer parallel access, such as the IRS with their e-file systems. Such examples illustrate how careful integration of technology can protect both citizens and their information. Considering the potential for dispute arising from denied access or errors in digital records, I’m curious how the concept of “writ of mandamus” https://criminalimmigrationlaw.com/2024/06/01/what-is-the-meaning-of-a-writ-of-mandamus-in-the-anglo-american-legal-system/ might be applied in these scenarios. Could this legal remedy serve as a safeguard for individuals seeking to compel government action on issues related to digital access and record accuracy?8

Thank you for sharing this insightful article on the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) new initiative for secure digital access to Social Security Numbers (SSNs). The emphasis on enhancing privacy and reducing identity theft is particularly timely and relevant in today’s digital landscape. One aspect that could further enrich the discussion is the potential impact of this system on vulnerable populations, such as the elderly or those with limited technological access. While secure digital access is a step forward, there may still be barriers for individuals who are not comfortable using online platforms. Additionally, this system could be complemented by educational initiatives that empower these individuals to navigate the new digital channels safely. Moreover, it’s interesting to note the growing trend towards digital solutions in government services. For instance, other federal entities, like the IRS, have also enhanced their digital interfaces to improve user experience while safeguarding sensitive information. These parallel efforts highlight a broader shift towards digitalization in public services that warrants further examination. Considering the implications of this secure access, how might the introduction of measures like a writ of mandamus influence the ability of individuals to compel government agencies to maintain transparency and accountability in their digital processes? https://criminalimmigrationlaw.com/2024/06/01/what-is-the-meaning-of-a-writ-of-mandamus-in-the-anglo-american-legal-system/

President Trump is on the right tract, as a tax prepare. I hope that he will provide a solution to the Tax consequences of married people who are paying 85% tax on their SS EARNINGS from 1986’s tax structure-so unfair – our own money with no index from inflation. This is the only thing not indexed in the tax code!! Stop making WORKING Americans from choosing Food or Drugs to stay alive!! Thanks to Pres. Trump defore had!!!

Hi Gustave G. Did you know it was Reagan who started having Social Security Benefits taxed? SS benefits are taxed when taken out and taxed again when you retire. The first time it was raised by Reagan with 25 percent of your SS benefits were taxed. Not only did Reagan start taxing SS benefits, he also used some of the SS benefits to pay off the deficit. Then again, in 1985 the tax rate went up to taking 85 percent of your SS benefits. Trump or 47 as I refer to him, is not helping. You can go on line and create your own account on line on the Social Security website. Unless they have up dated this feature, 47 did not do anything to streamline anything. Elon Musk called Social Security benefits a Pyramid Scheme. It seems the Republican Party is out to get our money that WE worked hard for.

I’m cautiously optimistic, I will have to wait to see the implementation before I pass judgement, but the current system provides virtually no protection against identity theft. Your personal identity information (PII) is readable to anyone with the means and desire, and a paper social security card is so laughably forged that a ten year old could do it.
I agree that this system needs to be optional, as there are many people who, for whatever reason, cannot or do not use modern technology, the good news is if they have never used technology or social media, or had someone else use it on their behalf, their PPI may be more difficult to acquire, but remember: all of the data breaches that are discovered are the ones that got caught. We don’t know how many were successful.

Yes it does

A family member is disabled and wouldn’t even know how to use a computer or phone to set up an SSA account. They are not allowed to have anyone else do it for them, even the guardian, per the SSA. How are they going to be able to access this feature?
P S.
This is an extremely bad idea. Who benefits? Certainly not those of us with SScards. Anything online can be hacked and then distributed. Please scrap this idea and keep the cards and secure online access. At the least, offer this as an OPTION–NOT MANDATED.

I disagree. I think this is a great idea. Most of the world is digital so as long as there are security measures in place (like ID.me) to protect someone else from using your information, I’d much rather add it to my phone than have a single piece of paper that can easily be lost, stolen or damaged. The only problem is that I can’t find where to do this on the SSA.gov website. Can anyone provide any guidance here?
Debbie
It says coming this summer

I agree with you 100% . Hackers, Scammers, and Elon Musk and his minions , already snatch our personal data along with Social Securitu numbers .,
Allen M.
Yep. Elon needs your SSN to pay the Mexican cleaning his gutters. What do his minions do with your data?

I logged into my account, went through every menu, and i do not see anything about a DIGITAL SS Card. Where exactly is it?
J.N
I just aske Copilot, and it says that this feature is not yet implemented. They are targeting sometime this Summer.
