You can now apply for a replacement Social Security card online using your personal my Social Security account. If you meet all requirements and live in some states or the District of Columbia, you can start using this service today. Go to www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount for more information.

This answer was horrible. IT only told you you can get one online if you are in the following states. It NEVER states what to do if you are not in one of those states and if it is minor.

Generally, when applying for a replacement Social Security card for a child under the age of 18, we consider the parent(s) or step-parent with custody, as the proper applicant. Applications for replacement cards for children cannot be done online. Remember that knowing their number is what is important. You will rarely need to show their card, but if you need information on how to obtain a replacement Social Security card, visit our Frequently Asked Questions. You will need to present documents proving your identity, your child’s identity and citizenship status (if not already established), and evidence of your relationship to, or responsibility for, your child. Also keep in mind the submitted documents must be originals. You can use birth certificates to prove your child’s age or citizenship. But you cannot use it as proof of identity. We hope this helps.

Hi, Penelope. To learn more on the process of replacing your Social Security card and what documents you will need to get a card, please visit our Social Security Number and Card page. Keep in mind all submitted documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency and must (unless otherwise indicated) have been issued within the last two years. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents. Once you’ve submitted all the needed documents, it can take up to 10 business days from the date we received the application to mail a replacement card. We hope this helps.
