    I need a replacement social security card for my child

    • A.C.

      Hi, Cierra. Generally, when applying for a replacement Social Security card for a child under the age of 18, we will consider the parent(s) or step-parent with custody, as the proper applicant. For more information on this subject, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions. To learn more on the process and what documents you and your child will need to get a card, please visit our Social Security Number and Card web page. As you noted, we need certified originals of the amended birth certificate, court orders, birth certificates, valid driver’s license and marriage certificate. We hope this helps!

    How do I apply for a replacement card. I lost mine.

    • A.C.

      Hi, Henry. First, realize that you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing the Social Security number is what is important. To see if you’re eligible to apply for a replacement Social Security card online or to learn more on the process and what documents you will need to get a card please visit our Social Security Number and Card web page. Keep in mind all mailed documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency and must (unless otherwise indicated) have been issued within the last two years. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents. Once you’ve submitted all the needed documents, it can take up to 10 business days from the date we received the application to mail a replacement card. We hope this helps.

    Is there a way I can do an online request a replacement card for my child (who is under 18)?

  6. Charles E.

    I am trying to get a new soc sec card. Have not received my new number in the mail. Also tried to sign up on line and am not able to do that either.

    • V.V.

      Hi Charles. Not sure if you’re referring to a replacement Social Security card or if you’re referring to the new Medicare card mailing? If you haven’t received your new Medicare card, you may want to ensure that your address on file with Social Security is accurate. That could be why you’re unable to create an account as well.

      To check on your mailing address, please call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. or contact your local Social Security office.

      For updated information on the new Medicare cards, go to http://www.medicare.gov/newcard.

  7. Hollie W.

    My son was trying to get a replacement social security card. He turned 18 last summer and has a drivers permit. We were told at the office that even though a drivers permit is a valid state identification the social security office could not use it as valid ID. Why is this so? The state of Oregon only allows a person to have 1 valid state ID at a time. DMV states he can only have the drivers permit OR a State ID but not both. Drivers test openings are not until March and it is January. It seems crazy that a person would have to choose between driving and not just to get their social security card.

    • V.V.

      Hi Hollie, thanks for using our blog. If your son doesn’t have a U.S. driver’s license, state-issued identification card or a U.S. passport, we may be able to use other documents such as:

      •Employee identification card;
      •School identification card;
      •Health insurance card; or
      •U.S. military identification card.

      All submitted documents must be original or certified copy, cannot be expired and must show the person’s name along with other identifying information (date of birth or age).

      To learn about what documents are acceptable to get a card, please visit our “Social Security Number and Card” web page.
