      Hi Maurice, we prefer a government issued document with your picture, as proof of identity to replace your Social Security card. If you do not have one or you cannot get one within a reasonable amount of time, we may be able to use other documents such as:
      •Employee identification card;
      •School identification card;
      •Health insurance card; or
      •U.S. military identification card.
      Any document you submit, must be an original or certified copy, current (not expired) and show your name, and other identifying information (date of birth or age).
      Also, realize that you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important.

    My 14 y.o son needs a replacement card. It appears he can not do this online. If I, mother, bring all the documents to ss office, does he have to be with me? Is there a way I can open “my account” in my name and request his ss card replacement?

    • R.F.

      Hello Sherry, you can only create a my Social Security account using your own personal information and for your own exclusive use. You cannot create or use an account on behalf of another person.
      You can bring your son’s application with the required documents needed to process the request for his replacement Social Security card. As the mother of a minor, you will be allowed to sign the application. However, you must also provide documents that will help us identify you. Any document you submit, must be an original or certified copy, current (not expired) and show his/your name, and other identifying information (date of birth or age). We prefer a government issued document with his/your picture, as proof of identity, we may be able to use other documents such as:
      •Employee identification card;
      •School identification card;
      •Health insurance card; or
      •U.S. military identification card.
      To learn more on the process and what documents you will need to get a card, please visit our “Social Security Number and Card” web page. When ready, you can visit the nearest Social Security office or Card Center in your area.
      We hope this information helps

    Does anyone know if you can use the temporary paper copy of ID that give you at the license commissioner’s office as proof of I’d when trying to obtain a ssh card..
    The reason I ask is because I lost everything in a fire and am due to start a new job an a few days..so 1st I went to health dept pd $15 to get a copy of birth certificate,next to the License commissioner and got a “state issued”ID for $41.25,Then to the SSA just to be told after waiting an hour while Federal Employees waited on 2 customer’s,when my turn came I was told by some Asswhole that I had to wait for hard copy of ID. To come 2 weeks off..how can I win

  10. Sheila

    I need a replacement social security card for my 16 year old.

    • R.F.

      Hello Sheila, you will need to submit an application with your child’s proof of identity to replace his or her Social Security card. We prefer to see the child’s U.S. passport. If that document is not available, we may accept other document showing your child’s name with identifying information (i.e., age, or date of birth). We generally can accept a non-photo identity document if it has enough information to identify the child (such as the child’s name and age, date of birth or parents’ name). Any document you submit, must be an original or certified copy, current (not expired).
      Also, realize that he/she may not need a replacement card. We rarely need to show our card. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important.
      A child under age 18 may sign the application, if you sign the application on behalf of your child, you will need to provide us with documents that identify you.
      To learn more on the process and what documents you will need to get a card, please visit our “Social Security Number and Card” web page.
      When ready, you can take or mail the application to the nearest Social Security office or Card Center in your area.
      Please call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213 for further assistance. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Generally, you will have a shorter wait time if you cal later during the day or later in the week. Thanks!
