man on laptop We’re with you through life’s journey, putting you in control of your finances and future. Social Security has made requesting or replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. Now you have the ability to download it anytime and anywhere you want using our online services. There’s no need to visit a field office.

An SSA-1099 is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to IRS on your tax return.

If you currently live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and request an instant, printable replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.

A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is typically available for the previous tax year after February 1.

If you already have a personal my Social Security account, you should access your online account and go to “Replacements Documents” to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document on your computer or laptop and email it. If you don’t have a personal my Social Security account, creating a secure account is very easy to do and usually takes less than 15 minutes.

If you’re a noncitizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Securing today and tomorrow isn’t always easy, but Social Security continues to improve our customer service with easy to use online features. Visit our website for more information.

This is my first year collecting SS. The 1099R does not appear as an option under document replacement. Is that because I have not yet had a complete year of SS benefits? Will this be available to me after 2 Feb.?

    • L.A.

Hi Marguerite. Thanks for your question. The SSA-1099 is mailed by January 31 each year. If for any reason you do not receive your SSA-1099 in the mail, starting on February 1, you can request a replacement SSA-1099 for the previous tax year. And the good news is that you can request a replacement SSA-1099 by using her your personal my Social Security account. We hope this helps.

My mother in law (Korean language only) has a broken hip and is unable to be physically present at a field office to obtain a proof of income denial letter, as she has done previously. This is for her application for CAPI benefits.

How do we get this done? I have been led to believe that it can be done via telephone with a translator and, if that’s the case, I’d like to schedule a conference call asap.

  7. Trina E.

The online process does not work properly. When I put my info in it said it was incorrect. So stupid. I need a form SSA-1099/1042 to prove my income. I can’t use the one from earlier it has to be a new one.

How Can I get a replacement SSA-1099 for my mother, she is unable to do it and I am her POA but am not allowed to set up an online account on her behalf. I need it to get her into an new assisted living facility.

    • L.A.

Hi John. If your mother is unable to manage her own benefits with Social Security, you can file an application to legally serve as her representative payee. To learn more about becoming a representative payee, please read our publication, “A Guide for Representative Payees.” You may make an appointment, by calling us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). After a representative payee has been selected for your mother, the designated representative can then request a replacement SSA-1099. We hope this helps.

It would be a much better application if we could upload 1099 for years earlier than the last year.

    • L.A.

Hi Carmen. Please note that we upload the SSA-1099 in compliance with the rules set forth by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). We mail the paper form in January of every year. After February 1st of every year, you can get a replacement SSA-1099 by using your personal my Social Security account. We hope this helps.
