man on laptop We’re with you through life’s journey, putting you in control of your finances and future. Social Security has made requesting or replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. Now you have the ability to download it anytime and anywhere you want using our online services. There’s no need to visit a field office.

An SSA-1099 is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to IRS on your tax return.

If you currently live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and request an instant, printable replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.

A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is typically available for the previous tax year after February 1.

If you already have a personal my Social Security account, you should access your online account and go to “Replacements Documents” to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document on your computer or laptop and email it. If you don’t have a personal my Social Security account, creating a secure account is very easy to do and usually takes less than 15 minutes.

If you’re a noncitizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Securing today and tomorrow isn’t always easy, but Social Security continues to improve our customer service with easy to use online features. Visit our website for more information.

I need a replacement 1099 tax statemet for my deceased mother, for the 2018 tax year. How do I do this?

    • A.C.

Hi, Michael. We are sorry to hear about your loss. The SSA-1099 is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you did not receive the benefit statement, the executor will need to go into the local Social Security office with proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. If you need more information, call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask a representative for assistance. We hope this helps.

Hi, Evie. Thanks for your question. The SSA-1099 is mailed by January 31 each year. If for any reason you do not receive your SSA-1099 in the mail by then, starting on February 1, 2020, you can request a replacement SSA-1099/1042S for Tax Year 2019 by visiting your personal my Social Security account. If you need a benefit verification letter, you can view, print, and save your benefit verification letter by also visiting your personal my Social Security account. We hope this helps.

I did not receive mySSA-4926-SM form for 2020

  9. George M.

It’s unlikely I’m the first to suggest Social Security more fully embrace the technological age. You need to make the 1099, etc. forms available electronically . . . not just the replacement forms. I have never needed a replacement form, but every year I do need an original form. You could save much by not printing and mailing forms to those of us who are capable of downloading them ourselves, and make no mistake, many (probably most) of us are intelligent enough to know that’s our money you’re wasting. Note: I get every other income document electronically–including from other federal-government agencies– you’re the only hold out. I believe you can do better, and as I have done for years, I’ll hope for better access for my 2020 SSA-1099. Please don’t disappoint me again.

My current Social Security benefits do not take out any Federal Taxes – I would like to take out 15% for Federal
Taxes for the year 2020 not sure how to do. Thanks Gary

    • A.C.

Hi, Gary. Thanks for your question. In order to have taxes withheld from your Social Security benefit, you must start by printing, completing and submitting an IRS Voluntary Withholding Request Form (Form W-4V). On this form, you can choose to have 7, 10, 12, or 22 percent of your monthly benefit withheld. The Form W-4V (to withhold federal taxes from your Social Security benefits) can be returned to your local Social Security office by mail or in person. See our Benefits Planner: Withholding Income Tax From Your Social Security Benefits web page for more information. We hope this helps.
