New Guidance about COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

“The Treasury Department launched a new web tool allowing quick registration for Economic Impact Payments for eligible individuals who do not normally file a tax return, and also announced that it would begin making automatic payments.  However, for some people receiving benefits from the Social Security Administration—specifically those who have dependent children under the age of 17—it is to their advantage to go to this portal to ensure they also get the $500 per dependent Economic Impact Payment.  I encourage them to do this as soon as possible, and want to provide the following details:

People who receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability insurance benefits and who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 and who have qualifying children under age 17 should now go to the IRS’s webpage to enter their information instead of waiting for their automatic $1,200 Economic Impact Payment.  By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment.  If Social Security beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

The same new guidance also applies to SSI recipients, especially those who have qualifying children under age 17.  To receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for, go to the IRS’s Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info page and provide information about yourself and your qualifying children.

Additionally, any new beneficiaries since January 1, 2020, of either Social Security or SSI benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, will also need to go to the IRS’s Non-Filers website to enter their information.

Lastly, for Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries who do not have qualifying children under age 17, you do not need to take any action with the IRS.  You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS as long as you received an SSA-1099 for 2019.

For SSI recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17, we continue to work closely with Treasury in our efforts to make these payments automatically.  Please note that we will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found at the IRS’s Coronavirus Tax Relief and Economic Impact Payments page.  In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.”

Here is the final payment date for SS and SSI:

    The Hill in Washington, DC
BY NAOMI JAGODA – 04/23/20 10:15 AM EDT

A Treasury spokeswoman said the deadline was needed in order to promptly get payments to as many Social Security recipients as possible. She said that because of constraints on the IRS computer systems, payments to all Social Security recipients would need to be delayed in order to give those with children more time to provide dependent information.

The spokeswoman said that non-filers who receive Social Security benefits should receive their rebates in their bank accounts by April 29, and non-filers who receive Supplemental Security Income and veterans benefits should start to get their payments in early May.

I would like to know how a person such as I on SSDI and SSI program but does not receive an SSI check, who qualifies for the Ohio Unemployment program for sole proprietorships will affect my SSDI under the new unemployment program for self employed/ sole proprietorship/ Independent contractor?

    • V.V.

Hi Pamela, thank you for your question. If receiving Social Security disability benefits (SSDI), unemployment insurance income will not affect the benefits. If receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you absolutely need to report all of your income, including unearned income such as unemployment. Please note that we will not consider economic impact payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

For more about reporting income, check out the online booklet, Understanding Supplemental Security Income. To report your income, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

We receive Ssdi payment direct deposited monthly along with with child benefits and spouse benefits.
We also file taxes yearly because it’s required since I have health insurance from the market place.
I don’t give my bank information to my tax place.

So my question is since we DO receive ssdi monthly with direct deposit, will that be satisfactory for the stimulus payment to be direct deposited too?
I would think the IRS and SSA would be communicating back and forth and they would get our direct deposit bank info from SSA.

Many people has asked this same question.
Can I please have a site moderator answer this.
    Thank you,
    #allstaysafe

End of April is near. SSDI with direct express here. As if 4/24 Still no stimulus deposit.

    • Wayne L.

Same here. We have no way of finding out any information.

    • Amy

For ssdi, its coming 4/29/20 by direct deposit or by direct express however you normally receive it.
SSi will most like get it the first Wednesday of May. Since they have been sticking to Wednesdays for direct deposit. Example 4/15, 4/22, 4/29 and May 6th. If you normally get a check I have no idea sorry but I’m sure of my facts by reading articles

  10. Cherry B.

I am on ssi . if you don’t get any kind of tax papers from the irs.will we still get the stimulus check? I am really confused about who gets it on ssi and who don’t thats on ssi. Could you please tell me the truth please. Confused in Alabama.

    • John

Yes ,those receiving SSI and are not claimed as a dependent on anyone else’s claim will receive $1,200 per adult and $500 for each child under 17.
You should have gone to the non-filer website for the IRS and entered your banking information that is up to date if you did not you will get a paper check there is a schedule that tells you when the checks are going out and it goes by how much money you made example and it’s probably not correct is 15,000 to 17000 May 9th your check will go out. Again it’s probably wrong but it’s an example you can find it by Googling when will I get my check stimulus payment I am on SSI.

if you do absolutely nothing the IRS will use your SSI income and if you have Bank info on file they will send you just your payment of 1200 if you do not do anything and do not have a bank account on file you will be mailed the check regardless every single American who has a social security number will be getting a letter from the IRS 15 days after payment is mailed out verify that you received yours and if not they’ll be corrective actions in the letter. Right now you can go to IRS where’s my payment they’ll be a blue tab click on it put in your social security number your birth date and your address. it will tell you your qualifications and what to do next correct me if I’m wrong people I thought that was to be done by April 22nd

    • V.V.

Hi Cherry, thank you for your question. Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17 do not need to take any action with the IRS. You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS. You should receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as you would normally receive your Social Security benefits. Treasury expects automatic payments for Social Security beneficiaries no later than the end of April and automatic payments for SSI recipients no later than early May. We hope this helps.
