New Guidance about COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

“The Treasury Department launched a new web tool allowing quick registration for Economic Impact Payments for eligible individuals who do not normally file a tax return, and also announced that it would begin making automatic payments.  However, for some people receiving benefits from the Social Security Administration—specifically those who have dependent children under the age of 17—it is to their advantage to go to this portal to ensure they also get the $500 per dependent Economic Impact Payment.  I encourage them to do this as soon as possible, and want to provide the following details:

People who receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability insurance benefits and who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 and who have qualifying children under age 17 should now go to the IRS’s webpage to enter their information instead of waiting for their automatic $1,200 Economic Impact Payment.  By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment.  If Social Security beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

The same new guidance also applies to SSI recipients, especially those who have qualifying children under age 17.  To receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for, go to the IRS’s Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info page and provide information about yourself and your qualifying children.

Additionally, any new beneficiaries since January 1, 2020, of either Social Security or SSI benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, will also need to go to the IRS’s Non-Filers website to enter their information.

Lastly, for Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries who do not have qualifying children under age 17, you do not need to take any action with the IRS.  You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS as long as you received an SSA-1099 for 2019.

For SSI recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17, we continue to work closely with Treasury in our efforts to make these payments automatically.  Please note that we will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found at the IRS’s Coronavirus Tax Relief and Economic Impact Payments page.  In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.”

I am on survivor benefits, and I received my survivor benefits yesterday, April 22, 2020..I did not receive my Stimulus payment, with my benefits..I filed and received my 2019, income tax refund in February..I got a paper check because at that time, I was not on survivor benefits yet..I didn’t have Direct Deposit, but now that I’m on Survivor benefits, I have a Direct Express debit card in whuch my benefits are received on..I called my tax preparer yesterday which is not Turbo Tax or any major company..She told me she would find out when, and how I’ll receive my Stimulus check..Well, she just called me a few minutes ago, and told me they’re mailing my check out tomorrow, April 24, 2020, so I should receive in next week..So, I’m pretty sure the Ssi, Survivors, AS DO, and Railroad will receive theirs in the next couple days..Good Luck everyone..We should be Blessed that we are receiving , a check..Stay safe..

    • Paul

Yoda, where did you read the deposit will be in the accounts on the 29th?

Same here! I have been receiving SSI Benefits since 2010 via Direct Deposit. I don’t even receive half of the funds that would qualify me to file taxes. It’s extremely difficult living on $700 fixed income per month. All of my bills are 1-2 months behind and I’m forced to pay the power or water B.C. it’s about to be cut off. I’m greatful for what I have or what my creditors actually own. I have a difficult time understanding why SSI (etc) beneficiaries have not been provided with a date to expect stimulus funds. I’m sure others understand how it feels not knowing where your next meal will come from or if at all. Just be honest let us know. Be a person of morals. B.C. all this not knowing is beyond stressful. If you don’t believe us try living our lives. If we knew when we could tell the power and water providers when they will get every dime owed in hopes of them not terminating our services. It’s a difficult life but you learn to appreciate everything you do have….

So what noone has done a thing for SSI and SSDI. We should have been first you have had my info for ten years, wtf is going on? I am tired of this so are others. When people start committing suicide or killing their families cuz we can’t survive you still will not tell us a firm date will you? Tell it’s to FUCK OFF for me I can’t get ahold of them or I would tell them myself

I tried to add my son who I receive SSI for and it told me I was not eligible to claim him as my dependant because his social security number matches a different tax form my daughter was going to claim him on her taxes because she stayed with us and had income but decided not to and now it won’t let me what do I need to do for his $500?

  6. Sandra C.

I filed taxes in 2018 but had to pay so the IRS did not have my bank information. Will they then go to SSA for my information?

    • Tony

Good question Sandra. I filed my 2019 return and made a payment to IRS, and CA. I am on SSA and have been getting my direct deposit for my SSA Benefit. So SSA has my direct deposit bank account info. Question to SSA : will IRS use my SSA direct deposit info OR will the mailing address on my tax return be used? ((( I read as many of the posts & IRS info available, my little niche seems to fall in the proverbial “gray area” . . . ))))

    • V.V.

Hi Sandra, thank you for your question. Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17 do not need to take any action with the IRS. You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS. You should receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as you would normally receive your Social Security benefits. Treasury expects automatic payments for Social Security beneficiaries no later than the end of April and automatic payments for SSI recipients no later than early May. We hope this helps.

  7. Lindsey O.

hi. i have been on SSI for 5yrs but just 2 months ago started receiving my benefits by direct deposit to my bank account. do i need to go to the non-filers portal and put my info in or am i ok since thats how i get my benefits? bc when they were first saying we needed to go on there and file so that we put in our info it kept rejecting it every time saying i had to have an amount put in on some of the lines when i dont have “wages” or any of that kind of stuff to put in. so i never was able to complete it

    • V.V.

Hi Lindsey, thank you for your question. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17 do not need to take any action with the IRS. You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS. You should receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as you would normally receive your Social Security benefits. • Seneca

I receive SSI for my son who is 3 years old. Do i qualify for impact payment? I did however fill out the Non-Filers form already.

        • Kevin

You are supposed to get $1200.00 for you, and 500.00 for your son.

        • V.V.

Hi Seneca, thank you for your question. Please visit the IRS Economic Impact Payments Information Center to answer your questions about eligibility, payment amounts, what to expect, when to expect it and more. Hope this helps!

    • Daniel W.

It is my understanding that everyone or nearly everyone has a Direct Express card and they will be receiving their payments they’re just like when they get their benefits I’m not sure when they keep saying within the next couple of days they’ve been saying that for over a week I understand I need my money too I’m starving

  9. Yaffa

    Hi,

Does anyone know if the SSA-1099 Form contains an SSDI, non-filing, recipients bank routing number?

I cannot find the answer online anywhere!

I’m asking because I don’t recall anything beyond a mailing location and suspect that the IRS will have to mail a paper check, because the form lacks direct deposit information.

    • V.V.

Hi Yaffa, thank you for your question. Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17 do not need to take any action with the IRS. • Deborah P.

Hi Vonda, I receive both SSDI and a small check for 38$ since I’m 200% below Federal Poverty Level I don’t get enough to file taxes! I put in all information on IRS site and next page it said if you receive SSDI or Railroad pension you do not have to do anything? So I hit start over and it deleted everything, please tell me I didn’t mess everything up as everyone else has gotten a check, since I’m buying things I wouldn’t normally buy like scarf’s extra toliet paper ect I’m worried I’ll overdraft my checking? Today is 4/23/2020 is it included in the same check SSI or SSDI

      • Rory L.

Doesnt make much sence at all to me!!! All of my friends who are working(and dont really need it) have recieved their payment. Myself and it seems many other SSDI recipients who barely get ends meat from SSDI are still waiting for theirs???As Usual, Our Bass akwarks government at it’s finest,Thanks for making us wait!!

    • Daniel W.

You don’t really need it you should get your payment on your Direct Express debit card providing you get one from what I understand ever disability or Social Security recipients now receives Direct Express you can take it off that if necessary and put it in your bank account
