New Guidance about COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

“The Treasury Department launched a new web tool allowing quick registration for Economic Impact Payments for eligible individuals who do not normally file a tax return, and also announced that it would begin making automatic payments.  However, for some people receiving benefits from the Social Security Administration—specifically those who have dependent children under the age of 17—it is to their advantage to go to this portal to ensure they also get the $500 per dependent Economic Impact Payment.  I encourage them to do this as soon as possible, and want to provide the following details:

People who receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability insurance benefits and who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 and who have qualifying children under age 17 should now go to the IRS’s webpage to enter their information instead of waiting for their automatic $1,200 Economic Impact Payment.  By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment.  If Social Security beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

The same new guidance also applies to SSI recipients, especially those who have qualifying children under age 17.  To receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for, go to the IRS’s Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info page and provide information about yourself and your qualifying children.

Additionally, any new beneficiaries since January 1, 2020, of either Social Security or SSI benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, will also need to go to the IRS’s Non-Filers website to enter their information.

Lastly, for Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries who do not have qualifying children under age 17, you do not need to take any action with the IRS.  You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS as long as you received an SSA-1099 for 2019.

For SSI recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17, we continue to work closely with Treasury in our efforts to make these payments automatically.  Please note that we will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found at the IRS’s Coronavirus Tax Relief and Economic Impact Payments page.  In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.”

my husband and I still haven’t rec our stimulus check we get reg ss. have used the same bank and bank account for years. SO WHY HAVEN’T WE REC OURS YET ???

    • V.V.

Hi Dorine, thank you for your question. Treasury, not Social Security, will be making automatic Economic Income Payments to eligible people. Unfortunately, we do not have information about the exact schedule for these payments. Treasury anticipates these payments to go out to Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries starting around the end of April and to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients starting in early May. Continue to check the irs.gov/coronavirus page for updates.

I receive SSA from my passing mother and I filed my taxes for 2019 will I get my payment on my direct express card or continue to look in the mail?

  3. Russell S.

why when I’ve been on disability using the same bank for over a decade .
should have been paid rt behind those who filed taxes no again the government overlooks the old and disabled people first

  4. Johnathan D.

Its obvious with so many comments/ problems, something is wrong because many of us have not received anything WHY. Here it is the 21 first of April and my direct deposit card from the government has a balance of 8 cents WHY! WE ONLY GET PAID ONCE A MONTH ITS NOT RIGHT FOR IRS TREASURY OR SS TO WAIT TILL OUR REGULAR PAY DATE SUCH AS 1ST AND 3RD TO PAY US ITS WRONG!

I receive SSDI. I filed taxes for 2018 cause I worked a month. On 4-15 the stimulus payment went to the account from the 2018 taxes which is closed. I even provided my updated info on the IRS website a week prior. Will I now get a paper check or because of my SSDI will it be resubmitted…..so confused

    • marcus

Thomas, unfortunately this is a very tricky situation which I don’t think the IRS was prepared for. I was contacted by two individuals who filed 2018 and got their refunds put on some stupid H&R Block debit card. Those cards expired in late 2019, well their stimulus payments were sent to those debit cards and since the cards were expired, the money was sent back to the IRS, at least that’s what H&R Block told them. Now they are in a pickle and don’t know what to do next.

Finding this frustrating that everyone around me getting there check and can’t find anything no where to help ease my mind if me and my daughter will get stimulus. I’ve been disabled for two years with social security. Now before this I had to deal with identity theft yearly needing a PIN number each year and now it’s down to this and there’s no true portal with the right answers so can someone from ssi please assure us (me and my daughter) that will get stimulus and possibly by when sense were in lock down mode due to this corona crap we would lime to be able to do something extra sense we’re on a fixed income now thanks

You will not get your stimulus until your next monthly benefit check or deposit you can keep checking all you want in April but I’m telling you it will be next month

Hi there, thank you for using our blog. Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17 do not need to take any action with the IRS. You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS. You should receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as you would normally receive your Social Security benefits. Treasury expects automatic payments for Social Security beneficiaries no later than the end of April and automatic payments for SSI recipients no later than early May. We hope this helps.

You should try and be more accurate with your responses seeing that you a public affairs specialist. My neighbor is and has been on SSDI for a few years now. He receives his monthly benefit by direct deposit. However he just found out he is being mailed a check.

To the Public Affairs people replying to comments:
Plz do those of us keeping up on this blog as well as yourselves a huge favor by 1st going to read AND take note of what the links you keep providing on who’s “supposed” to be receiving their economic impact stimulus payment read & particular note how one day article says when person’s in this catagory & that, can expect their payment, direct deposit as well as by mail, but u need to also take it upon yourselves to go back & check. “Then” hopefully you can understand why an extreme number of people are losing their composure & lashing out. This is because nearly every day or every other day IRS has changed who/when/how folks should “expect” to receive their Much Needed Help.
Even most the big news outlets are failing to notice or if they have, have stopped writing stories depending upon the IRS’s own website & even others stopping to do stories because they themselves can’t depend on what they’re reading/being told.
I’m not trying at all to be harsh here, only hoping to inform you (if you haven’t noticed all this) so you don’t bare the brunt of people’s frustration & anger after being told several differing “Official” stories.
I myself do realize this is a Herculean effort to get these pmts out in an expected record time, but at very same time I too am one of the millions in massive need of this help, NOW.
    Thx for reading.

    Ok,
My husband I and I filed this year because we knew that the stimulus would be easier and faster to get if we did so. (we are not required because of SSDI). So my husband and I received the stimulus check direct deposit. He has SSDI and we have four dependents. However we did NOT receive the $500 per child in that direct deposit. We can not file on the NON-FILERS application because we already filed our tax return for this year (now I wish we hadn’t). How are we to correct this?

    • marcus

When you filed, did claim the dependents ? If not or you think you may have done something incorrectly, go back and file an amended return.
