New Guidance about COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

“The Treasury Department launched a new web tool allowing quick registration for Economic Impact Payments for eligible individuals who do not normally file a tax return, and also announced that it would begin making automatic payments.  However, for some people receiving benefits from the Social Security Administration—specifically those who have dependent children under the age of 17—it is to their advantage to go to this portal to ensure they also get the $500 per dependent Economic Impact Payment.  I encourage them to do this as soon as possible, and want to provide the following details:

People who receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability insurance benefits and who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 and who have qualifying children under age 17 should now go to the IRS’s webpage to enter their information instead of waiting for their automatic $1,200 Economic Impact Payment.  By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment.  If Social Security beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

The same new guidance also applies to SSI recipients, especially those who have qualifying children under age 17.  To receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for, go to the IRS’s Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info page and provide information about yourself and your qualifying children.

Additionally, any new beneficiaries since January 1, 2020, of either Social Security or SSI benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, will also need to go to the IRS’s Non-Filers website to enter their information.

Lastly, for Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries who do not have qualifying children under age 17, you do not need to take any action with the IRS.  You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS as long as you received an SSA-1099 for 2019.

For SSI recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17, we continue to work closely with Treasury in our efforts to make these payments automatically.  Please note that we will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found at the IRS’s Coronavirus Tax Relief and Economic Impact Payments page.  In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.”

My husband receives SSI payments on a Direct Express debit Mastercard. I have always cared for him at home, leaving me unable to work. I’m wondering if I would qualify for the stimulus check. I haven’t filled out the non-filers for for my husband yet because they should know his information and I’m not sure about the routing number. Direct Express cards first came out in ’08 through Comerica Bank in Dallas; we live in NC. Comerica bank has a routing number for Texas and, account numbers are the numbers on the Direct express card.

SSDI and SSI are not the same thing. I keep seeing them referred to as SSDI/SSI, and this is incorrect. SSDI is Social Security Disability, and if you receive this you will automatically receive a stimulus payment. SSI is Supplemental Security Income, not disability. If you only get SSI, you need to file. If you receive both, as I do, then you don’t need to file. You may get SSI because you’re disabled, but it’s not disability.

So has anyone that has the Direct Express card recieved a payment? I tried the tool too it said cant determine eligibility at moment. I read it’s for tax payers.

    • CMV

I get the exact same response.

    • Anthony L.

Payment for people receiving benefits do not start till next week.

#1- you CAN get a routing and account number for DIRECT EXPRESS CARDS! YOU HAVE TO CALL THE NUMBER ON THE BACK OF YOUR CARD!! YOU WILL HEAR THE PROMPT ASKING IF YOU WANT DIRECT DEPOSIT INFO!
#2- I have not read ANYWHERE of a definite answer about the Direct Express Cards! All the people I know that have gotten stimulus payments have BANK ACCOUNTS WITH DIRECT DEPOSIT.

    • S.S.I. R.

I just called the number on the back of my card. I got no such prompt no matter what number I pushed. So stop lying. S.S.I. recipients do not have access to their account or routing numbers.

    • D

If you call and talk to someone which you have to do, no matter what, to try to get a account or routing number, they will say go to the website they can’t access that info. Get to the website and good luck because it will absolutely not show up.

Just wait cause if you have a DE card, it will channel that way

I called Direct Express. They told me to call The Social Security Administration. I called The Social Security Administration. They told me they can’t give out that information.

I arrived in USA in february 2020 and received my green card and social security number in march 2020. So, am i eligible for economic impact payment benefits under non filers or any other benefits that doesnt put me in public charges.

    • V.V.

Hi Amogha, thank you for your question. Please visit the IRS Economic Impact Payments Information Center to answer your questions about eligibility, payment amounts, what to expect, when to expect it and more. Hope this helps!

I’m on ssi and I’m 29. What would happen if I used the non filer tool? My dad claims me on his taxes. I think I should get something from this. It’s not my fault that I’m on ssi. Should I try the non filer tool even though he claims me?

    • Piddles

Why are so many parents fraudulently claiming their adult offspring as dependents?

      • Trey

What would happen if I tried the no filer even though my dad claims me? Is it worth a try anyway?

FELLOW SSDI RECIPIENTS YOU SHOULD KNOW THE TRUTH. WE WONT BE RECEIVING OUR STIMULUS CHECKS FRIDAY THE 17TH OF APRIL REGARDLESS OUR METHOD OF RECIEVING THE PAYMENT WHETHER IT BE DIRECT EXPRESS DIRECT DEPOSIT OR WHATEVER ELSE BECAUSE WE AS A GROUP HAVE BECOME DE PRIORITIZED. PEOPLE ON SSI WHO DIDNT PAY INTO THE SYSTEM HAVE EFFECTIVELY SKIPPED US IN LINE VIA THE NON FILERS TOOL AND THEY WILL BE GETTING THE STIMULUS STARTING FRIDAY APRIL 17TH. THATS THE REASON WHY THEY SAID FROM THE BEGINNING THAT WE WILL BE GETTING OUR STIMULUS THE SAME WAY WE RECEIVE OUR MONTHLY BENEFITS. WE WILL BE GETTING THE STIMULUS MONEY NEXT MONTH PEOPLE. STOP KIDDING YOURSELVES. IF THEY WANTED TO PAY US THEY WOULD HAVE DONE SO ALREADY BEIG THAT EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US ALREADY HAS A 1099 ON FILE. THEY LITERALLY COULD HAVE MADE US TH FIRST GROUP OR EVEN THIS GROUP. THATS WHY NO ONE ON SSDI HAS RECIECED ANYTHING AND ITS ALREADY WEDNESDAY..TWO DAYS BEFORE THE 17TH WHEN WE ARE ALLEGEDLY GOING TO START TO RECEIVE THE PAYMENT BUT YOU KNOW WE WONT BECAUSE NOBODY HAS GOTTEN ANYTHING AND PEOPLE ALWAYS GET IT EARLY LIKE THE PEOPLE WHO GOT IT LAST WEEK AND SATURDAY EVEN THOUGH CHECKS WERE SUPPOSED TO START ON MONDAY 13TH.
JUST WANTED TO HELP MY FELLOW SSDI RECIPIENTS OUT AND LET YOU ALL KNOW THE TRUTH AND STOP HAVING FALSE HOPE. WE WILL BE THE LAST GROUP PAID THE STIMULUS MONEY. THE NEXT GROUP WILL BE THOSE PEOPLE ON SSI WHO USED THE NON FILERS APP AND THE REST OF THE FILERS AND THAT WILL BE FROM FRIDAY THE 17TH TO THE 24TH AND THEN THE 28TH TO THE 2ND ALL OF US WHO RECIEVE SSDI WILL RECEIVE OUR STIMULUS LIKE WE NORMALLY WOULD OUR BENEFITS WHICH MEANS WE WILL GET IT ON THE SAME DAY WE GET OUR SSDI BENEFITS YOU JUST HAVE TO READ BETWEEN THE LINES.
THERE IS NOONE WHO HAS NOT FILED AND IS ON SSDI WHO WILL OR HAS RECEIVED THE STIMULUS PAYMENT UNTIL EARLY MAY AND ALL THIS NON SENSE ABOUT US BEING PAID ON FRIDAY IS JUST A CRUEL JOKE PEOPLE. IF YOU ARE STRUGGLING TO SURVIVE AND DEPENDING ON THE STIMULUS CHECK TO COME ON FRIDAY BECAUSE YOU HAVE SSDI AND THINK YOU WILL BE PRIORITIZED WAKE UP. WE SEE HOW LITTLE THESE PEOPLE CARE ABOUT OUR SURVIVAL EVERY SINGLE YEAR WHEN WE ARE GIVEN PITIFUL COST OF LIVING ADJUSTMENTS MEANWHILE ALL THE MEDICINE PRICES GO UPAND OUR MEDICARE PREMIUMS INCREASE. NO, WE ARE NOT GOING TO BE PAID THAT STIMULUS MONEY ON FRIDAY BECAUSE THEY HAVENT EVEN MADE IT A PRIORITY TO START WORKING ON IT UNTIL NEXT WEEK AND THATS AFTER THEY TAKE CARE OF SSI. BE BLESSED AND GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

    • Deanne

I’m on S.S.I. and can’t even use the online filing crap. It literally doesn’t let me. So shut up and take your meds, you utter wacko.

  9. Denise C.

I get SSDI and it is automatically deposited every month. My spouse works but part time and we were told we had to file a joint return. My name is the only one on the account. And I know a lot of people that already received theirs, including my son. We did file in 2018 thru H and R block. So will I have to wait for my check? We did file 2019 also but they said there was a paper missing a form about the medical. Not a major problem but I can’t get in touch with the IRS . Is it possible to get an answer on this?

  10. Anthony L.

those that don’t file taxes and receive government benefits are in the 2nd round of stimulus going out….it is supposed to start 10 days after the first round starts…the first round started on the 10th…so people who receive benefits should start seeing their stimulus around the 21st! Next week! And you all should be grateful. People lost their jobs and their income….people who receive benefits didn’t lose anything…and yes I am on benefits but I have a wonderful life on my $750 a month…..some of you should budget better!

    • Unruffled

You must live in a roach motel if you’re able to survive on less than a living wage

    • ssdi i.

WHAT IN THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? THERE ARE ALOT OF PEOPLE WHO DID NOT LOSE THEIR JOBS AND DONT HAVE A DISABILITY WHO ARE ALSO RECEIVING CHECKS. WE SHOULD BE GRATEFUL THAT WE ARE DISABLED AND COLLECT SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY INSURANCE? NO YOU SHOULD BE GRATEFUL YOU NEVER HAD TO WORK AND USE WHATEVER YOUR FAKE DISABILITY IS TO GET THAT SSI CHECK WHILE YOU PROBABLY STILL WORK SOMEWHERE OFF THE BOOKS BECAUSE $700 A MONTH IS NOT AFFORDING A DISABLED PERSON A WONDERFUL LIFE LET ALONE COVERING MEDICAL BILLLS AND THATS WHY YOU SHOULD SHUT UP BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT DISABLED YOU ARE A FRAUD AND ARE LUCKY SSI EVEN EXISTS. THIEF.

      • Yup

        Take your meds, psycho.
