Social Security Administration LogoIf you created a Social Security username more than 3 years ago, you will need to transition to a new or existing Login.gov account or use an ID.me account to have continuous access to our online services. We recently announced this news in a press release.

For step-by-step instructions on how to make the transition, watch this video. We also encourage you to visit our Frequently Asked Questions for Transitioning Your Social Security Username to Login.gov.

Beginning June 1, 2024, people who sign in to their personal my Social Security account with their username are given the option to transition to Login.gov. This blog provides additional information and guidance to help you with problems you may encounter. We’re also going to provide answers to some of the questions we’ve heard.

Who does this affect?

If you created your free and secure my Social Security account on or after September 18, 2021, no action is necessary because you already have the right setup. If you are among the 46 million people who created an account before September 18, 2021 and use your username and password to access Social Security online services today, you will need to create or use an existing account with one of our two Credential Service Providers (CSP) – Login.gov or ID.me.

Is there a deadline?

While you can still use a username and password to sign in to your personal my Social Security account right now, this option is going away later this year. At that time, you will be required to have a Login.gov or ID.me account if you want to continue to access your personal my Social Security and our many other convenient online services.

A personal my Social Security account provides tools for everyone, whether you receive benefits or not. You can use your account to request a replacement Social Security card, check the status of an application, estimate future benefits, and manage the benefits you already receive. To learn more, visit What is an Account?

Why are you making this change?

This change will simplify your sign-in experience and better align with federal authentication standards while providing safe and secure access to our online services.

What do I need to do?

To avoid any disruptions in accessing our online services we encourage you to transition your account now by signing in to your account with your username and password. Our online instructions will guide you through the process of creating or signing in to an existing Login.gov account.

Information about Login.gov and ID.me

You can use your Login.gov account to access your Social Security benefit information, services, and other information. And you can use that same Login.gov account to manage other government benefits and services. For support, visit the Login.gov Help Center.

ID.me is a single sign-on provider that also meets the U.S. government’s online identity proofing and authentication requirements. You can use one ID.me account to access government and private services. For support – Go to the ID.me Help Center.

I tried logging in and following instructions. It locked out and didn’t work. Messages for code didn’t come . This system does clearly not work. First instructions are not easy to follow. Merging my old account with a new one was a bust. the worst possible thing to have to the seniors and disabled people in the USA. I feel I have been failed by Social Security.

It is not fast. It is not easy. It runs you around in circles all day long.
It’s no surprise why there are so many homeless on the streets.
Our government is supposed to be helping us. Not taking us on a roller coaster ride.

Meanwhile government employees are overworked strung out on drugs, and cigarettes and a bunch of alcoholics like the rest of us and everyone in US is Bi polar cause we are in a bi polar nation cause everyone is addicted to pharmacy drugs staying alive by the addictions.

If you want my opinion paperwork is much safer than putting my personal information on this or any other site using a pc or phone. You see everyday someone getting their information stolen by someone. I don’t know where my information is going or who is using it. And you sure can’t trust this goverment anymore.

Followed directions exactly, got basically “Can’t complete, try again”.
So, this means if the time period runs out – September 21, 2024, I will not be able to access my account! ?
    Perfect.

Scott, I called and got a live person that spent 2 hours with me to get my Login.Gov. Now I have been trying over a week to get an authenticator app so I can get into the Login.Gov account. Very fustrating!!!

You may want to go to your local SS office for help. You won’t get any help here!!!!

I have a gov.ID and a S.S. ID The gov.ID now wants a selfie or state license. My S.S. account tells me I’m using my email as my username, I am not. This is completely crazy.

I too am having problems logging in. When I get to the point to enter the code a second time it does not work and it has not worked serveral times. I even waited before trying it again. The code comes and it works on the first entry but not the second time. I even tried entering A- before the number the second time and that did not work either. Very frustrating.

Obviously cause the government is flat broke so the it tech down the system so no one gets pd even vets are not getting their checks pretty soon we will all have to wear mask again and big pharmacy company will get rich vaccainating us again cause the medical fields are all sick with covid and pnemonia they are using scare tactics to not treat pts and just not treating most are not even certified drs they are fake dr and fake rns abusing pts kids adults and seniors I know this for a fact cause I been a dr for over 40 yrs and a red cross board member who discovered over 75-95 fake sites for fake certification you can even buy a fake board certificate in China and get fake creditationals and what sad is world wide we have fake drs fake rns and they all are drug addicts and alcoholic too stealing from hospitals drugs and reselling them its a investigation report CNN is going to blow wide open I hear about the use of narcatics in USA and world wide and the opoid epidemic and I think pretty soon going to be some big time Cartel bust coming by FOP Swat and other law enforcements. Cause cartel carries drugs over the border everyday and head cartel say the border is in on it and border officials sell them too.
