Tax season is approaching, and Social Security has made replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. Now you can get a copy of your 1099 anytime and anywhere you want using our online services.

A Social Security 1099 is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.

If you live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and request an instant, printable replacement form through your personal my Social Security account.

A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is available for the previous tax year after February 1.

If you already have a my Social Security account, you can log in to your online account to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document on your computer or laptop or even email it. If you don’t have a my Social Security account, creating one is very easy to do and usually takes less than 10 minutes.

If you receive benefits or have Medicare, your my Social Security account is also the best way to:

  • Get your benefit verification letter;
  • Check your benefit and payment information;
  • Change your address and phone number;
  • Change your direct deposit information;

  • Report your wages if you work and receive Social Security disability insurance or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.

If you’re a noncitizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S in the mail. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

    The SSA web page is down… There is no way to log in to my existing account. Quit answering with “call your local office” and give a straight answer. Also, put that answer on the home page stating that the web page has been compromised or that you are working on it or something besides the pat answer you have given everyone.

      Hi Ruth, thanks for using our blog. Over the weekend we experienced intermittent issues with some of our online services, including my Social Security accounts. We identified the cause and have fixed the issue. Our online services are currently available and fully operational. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

    Good news for everyone whose SSA-1099 showed less than the correct amount: I know where your benefit info went. They put it all on mine. Apparently I received nearly $500K in benefits last year. Oddly, that’s MUCH more than I received. I’ll happily take it if they want to send it, but otherwise the IRS is going to be looking for a lot of money. Sadly, I’m not holding my breath for SSA to work this out before Tax Day. I’ve had problems before that I settled by sending them THEIR OWN FORMS.

    • Merrisa

      Well, Goodness Gracious! That is just BONKERS. Thank you for sharing how wild these errors on our 1099s can get. Helps us all get some perspective. I think I am going to notify my congressman.

  3. Merrisa

    Clearly, something caused a mistake on the 1099s. I’m also going through this. It would be nice if the SSA made an official announcement to acknowledge whatever actually happened and to inform that we can expect corrected 1099 forms. Advising us all to call the SSA office or general line is a HUGE burden on us and SSA Staff. How about a coordinated press release so even CPAs and others that help SSA income recipients are notified. At the very least, make certain that SSA staff answering our calls know what to tell us so our hours on hold are not wasted with lack of a confident/competent response. Thank you.

      Typical government snafu (google it). Same problem here. I called my local SSA office and talked with a supervisor. She submitted a notification to the processing center in real time as we spoke and told me not to expect any feedback for at least 30 days. Time will tell, right?

      • Merrisa

        Thank you for your reply Mr. Curtis. I’ll do the same, and am also going to notify my congressman.

    I did contact the local USPS the very next day. Although I was impressed that my own mail carrier called me the same day, I got the usual run-a-round, blaming it on Covid, etc. I am concerned about identity theft. I have all 3 credit reporting agencies frozen, but my concern is that my social security number can be used for other purposes, filing taxes fraudulently with my social security number, being the biggest concern. I just don’t know were to go to hedge off possible issues. I did try calling the IRS but I get the recorded message to call back another day because they’re too busy.

      Hi Paul. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for details on what you can do if you think someone is using your Social Security number. We hope this helps!

      The USPS is having a lot of problems in the past year.
      I have mail that never shows up, or goes to a neighbor by mistake.
      I put on a credit freeze at credit agencies as I am also concerned.
      The way I look at it is this: My sensitive mail probably went to a neighbor who IS NOT a criminal, and they will eventually bring it over to me. If I NEVER get it, it probably went to a LAZY neighbor, who is still NOT a criminal.
      Helps me sleep…

    I’m signed up with USPS that takes images of mail that I’m supposed to receive each day. It showed the picture of my form SSA-1099 from the Social Sec, Adm. but it never arrived or was stolen from my mailbox. Do I need to worry about fraud? I really wish the Social Sec. Adm. wouldn’t print the full Social Security number on the form. I have a my Social Sec. account and I know that I can print the form from there but it doesn’t alleviate my concern about it not arriving by mail.

    • Vonda

      Hi Paul, thanks for using our blog. We appreciate your suggestion. You should contact your local USPS regarding this matter. We hope this helps!

    Someone please, please, please help me. No matter what username or password I enter in my effort to create an acct, one or the other of them, or both, are rejected. I tried this last February when I applied for my retirement benefit. It was the same thing. It’s like a fun house with no exit. I even have entered words in Turkish, my 2nd language. This is awful. I had the same trouble when applying for benefits & setting up an account. For some reason SS did not show that I was married so everything was still in my maiden name. I had to go to the SS office & then send a form along with my marriage license to get it straightened out. If you have received paper statements check the name. Mine had all come in my maiden name but I didn’t think anything about it. Hope this helps

    I’m unable to create an account. Everythning I enter is rejected. Help, please/

    I received my 1010 SSA-1099 today in the mail. There seems to be a big problem because the amount that received from SSA is much larger than the amount on the SSA-1099. Has anyone else reported this problem?

      Yes, my husband received his yesterday too and it has the same problem. Amount received from SSA is much larger than stated on the SSA 1099.

      Yes, I also received an incorrect SSA-1099. I called 800-772-1213 & received no useful help, other than verification that the Benefits Paid & Net Benefits were incorrect. The agent insisted that the form I received did not come from SSA. Hopefully the correct form will be available online Feb. 1.

      i have the same issue, that the 1099 doesn’t match my actual yearly benefit. i called SS and they put in a message to the processing center. i called in 2 weeks after and they said the processing center has until march 15 to reply. they are short staffed because of covid. i explained i needed the updated 1099 to file my taxes but they said again the processing center has until march 15.

    • Marc K.

      Paula,

      Did you ever figure out what the issue was. I am seeing the same problem.

      Marc

      • Cherrie

        Just received a corrected SSA 1099 in the mail and it matches the version you can download on the SSA website. Apparently this is a known problem that is being corrected.
