Is there a difference between a 1099-R and a 1099-SM? Do I have to declare the 1099-SM as taxable income?

    • Vonda

Hi Charles, thanks for using our blog. Social Security mails the SSA-1099 each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to IRS on your tax return.

Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for options on receiving an instant replacement SSA-1099 beginning February 1st, 2021.

How can I get the SSA 1099 for my Father who passed away in April 2020?

    • Vonda

Hi Ken, thanks for using our blog to ask your question. We are very sorry for your loss. The SSA-1099 is mailed in January to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you do not have access to the mail at that address, the executor will need to call the local field office after February 1, 2021. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

    • Vonda

Hi Ron. A Social Security 1099 is mailed out each January to people who receive benefits and tells you how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return. A replacement SSA-1099 for 2020 will be available after February 1, 2021. My Mother passed away in July of 2020. Her 1099 always came to my address, as I did her taxes. Will I still get one for her even if she is deceased? She was in a care home and I paid her monthly rent. I would like to file her taxes, as the family should get back the rent money we paid for half a year.

    • Vonda

We’re sorry to hear about your loss, Geraldine. The benefit statement is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you do not have access to the mail at that address, the executor will need to call the local field office. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. You can call your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

Really great information provided here – thank you for sharing this with everyone! I was going through this whole process the other week with my father and we used the forms found at https://www.1099-etc.com. Their software is extremely user friendly, especially for my father as he gets older.

This web site is not a helpful place to ask questions plain and as can be. Most of the answers are computer generated or cut and paste. If they are read, them it is to get the name to paste in our names. So with this I will ask the question as to where will I find the posting of the 1099.

Good Day! Simple question: Has anyone received their 2020 tax documents as of today 16 Jan 21? Seems like its a major issue for those of us waiting for them to file our tax returns. Please don’t respond with a general statement that does not answer the question. Thank you

            Good day,
I am a retired US Air Force veteran, who, along with my spouse, are receiving Social Security benefits. Neither of us are employed, WE are unable to set up a my social security account. The site simply won’t let us. We currently live in South Korea , with an APO AP address. Should we expect a copy mailed for each of us, since we can’t get one online? Or do we have to contact The FBU for our region (Manila, Philippines) and make our request from them? Any information you could provide would be most helpful

            Very Respectfully
            Arnold B Samberg
            USAF Retired
