Tax season is approaching, and Social Security has made replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. Now you can get a copy of your 1099 anytime and anywhere you want using our online services.

A Social Security 1099 is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.

If you live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and request an instant, printable replacement form through your personal my Social Security account.

A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is available for the previous tax year after February 1.

If you already have a my Social Security account, you can log in to your online account to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document on your computer or laptop or even email it. If you don’t have a my Social Security account, creating one is very easy to do and usually takes less than 10 minutes.

If you receive benefits or have Medicare, your my Social Security account is also the best way to:

  • Get your benefit verification letter;
  • Check your benefit and payment information;
  • Change your address and phone number;
  • Change your direct deposit information;
  • Request a replacement Medicare card; or
  • Report your wages if you work and receive Social Security disability insurance or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.

If you’re a noncitizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S in the mail. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

With a personal my Social Security account, you can do much of your business with us online, on your time, like get a copy of your SSA-1099 form. Visit our website to find out more.

    Dad (93) didnt file for 2018 so I am gathering his docs to take to the taxguy. The only one we dont have is moms 1099 for her SS, her only income.
    Question-normally could they just use the previous years numbers? Or do you have to file that year’s 1099?
    Questions-but since she passed I assume the taxguy cant estimate he will need the 1099 form?
    Thank you

      Hi Scott, thank you for your question. The benefit statement is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you do not have access to the mail at that address, the executor will need to go into the local field office with proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. Unfortunately, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen. We apologize for the inconvenience.

    I have tried calling the number that has been listed over and over almost as if it is just a bot giving the response. I have the ability to access my account online, but there is no ability for me to find an SSA-1099 form on the myssa page. Every time I call I wait on hold 2 hours and then am disconnected. There is nobody at the offices obviously. And I have a court date scheduled for April 23rd as well and have received no information as to whether court will be held either at the courthouse, by phone, or virtually. I am not sure where I can find the 1099 form to simply print out and fill out as the site says that people o SSI are eligible for the 1,200$ stimulus check. I have no other way of getting through to anyone. With 8 full hours wasted on hold to get no operator I am lost with nowhere to turn and am panicking because I have absolutely nowhere to turn & am in need of the support I have been receiving. Please provide me with an email or a direct phone number where I can speak with an employee. I literally beg of you to help me with my issues, because the phone systems are either so backed up or nonexistent in my experience. Thank you/grateful for your assistance.-Nick

      Hi Nick, thank you for using our blog. If you are requesting an SSA-1099 for the economic impact payments, you will not need it. The IRS will use SSA-1099 information that we provide them to automatically generate $1,200 economic impact payments to eligible Social Security beneficiaries who did not file tax returns in 2018 or 2019. Please visit http://www.irs.gov/coronavirus to learn more. If you need the SSA-1099 for tax purposes, you may be able to request replacement SSA-1099’s by using our automated telephone service at 1-800-772-1213. You can conduct the automated services 24 hours a day. At the prompt, indicate that you’re requesting a replacement SSA-1099. We hope this helps.

    Hi, I just started receiving ss benefits in March of 2020 and have direct deposit set up. However, there has been no occasion to receive ssa-1099 form yet. Also, I have not filed taxes or had any income since 2012 due to health but able to get by on savings until full retirement age and start of benefits. How can I expediate reception of stimulus check?

  8. Cynthia S.

    Hello my name is Cynthia and on March 17th I called and advised Social Security local branch that my bank account had been closed and I needed them to either provide a SSA Card, or send me a paper check and I will have a new account opened before next month’s payment cycle. The gentleman said it would be most timely to close the account on the Social Security side and process a paper check that I should receive on time, or maybe even a day, or two early.
    This did not happen and on the 27th (2 days late), I called the Social Security Administration local office to see if there was an issue on their side. At this point they said nothing that the man said he did on the 17th was done. My payment was sent to my old bank, luckily my old bank returned the payment electronically. Social Security said they had no proof that the payment was returned. The lady said she made the changes that the gentleman claimed was done on the 17th and that I should get the check in ten days, or so.
    I am just trying to verify if this is in the processes as it should be, or if I have to take further steps to get my payment, all the while I have no money to live on at all, further impacted by the Wuhan-Coronavirus Pandemic.
