man and woman on laptop It’s that time of year again. Preparing for tax season can seem overwhelming. Some forms and paperwork might be difficult to track down. If you misplaced your Benefits Statement or haven’t received it by the end of January, we’ve made it easy to go online to get a replacement with a personal my Social Security account.

An SSA-1099, also called a Benefit Statement, is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to the more than 60 million people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits received from Social Security in the previous year so people know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on their tax return.

For noncitizens who live outside of the United States and received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we’ll send form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

If you currently live in the United States and need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, we have a way for you to get a replacement quickly and easily. Go online and get a replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.

Every worker in the United States should create a personal my Social Security account. The secure and personalized features of my Social Security are valuable tools to help Americans plan for retirement.

Need copy of last years return

    • L.A.

Hi Hi Mary & James. Thanks for letting us know. Generally, we will only contact you if you have requested a call or have ongoing business with us. Recently, scams—misleading victims into making cash or gift card payments to avoid arrest for Social Security number problems—have skyrocketed. Our employees will never threaten you for information or promise a benefit in exchange for personal information or money.
If you receive a suspicious call like this: 1) Hang up. 2) Do not provide personal information, money, or retail gift cards. 3) Report suspicious calls here. For more information on how to protect yourself, check out our Frequently Asked Questions. We hope this helps.

My brother is in a memory care facility and unable to handle his affairs. I am his DPOA, including for Financial Affairs. I need his 2018 Benefit statement so I can file his 2018 taxes. How can I get this.
    Thank you.

    • L.A.

Hi Sandra. If your loved one is unable to manage his benefits with Social Security, you can file an application to legally serve as his representative payee. To learn more about becoming a representative payee, you can read our publication, “A Guide for Representative Payees.” When ready to make an appointment please call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). Once you have been selected as representative payee, then you can then request a replacement SSA-1099. We hope this helps.

I need my 1099’s for 2017 and 2018, in addition to a replacement Social Security card. I tried several times to create an online account, but could not do so because the questions about times for residences and when I owned which car were impossible for me to answer. I desperately need help. The 1099’s are the last submittal I must make to secure a mortgage. And, I always need a SS card. Can you PLEASE help me! email: c_j_williamson@yahoo.com, 713-591-8598. Charles J. Williamson, SSN *** – ** – ***.
    Thank You.

    • A.C.

Hi, Charles. For your security, we do not have access to private information in this venue. We ask that members in our Blog community work with our offices with specific questions. For copies of a SSA-1099 for a year prior to the last year, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., for assistance. Generally, you will have a shorter wait if you call later in the day. You can also contact your local Social Security office. As far as a replacement Social Security card, realize that you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing the Social Security number is what is important. To learn more on the process and what documents you will need to get a card please visit our Social Security Number and Card page. Just a reminder – please be cautious about posting personal information on social media. We hope this helps.
