man and woman on laptop It’s that time of year again. Preparing for tax season can seem overwhelming. Some forms and paperwork might be difficult to track down. If you misplaced your Benefits Statement or haven’t received it by the end of January, we’ve made it easy to go online to get a replacement with a personal my Social Security account.

An SSA-1099, also called a Benefit Statement, is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to the more than 60 million people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits received from Social Security in the previous year so people know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on their tax return.

For noncitizens who live outside of the United States and received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we’ll send form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

If you currently live in the United States and need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, we have a way for you to get a replacement quickly and easily. Go online and get a replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.

Every worker in the United States should create a personal my Social Security account. The secure and personalized features of my Social Security are valuable tools to help Americans plan for retirement.

This does not help me. I need a 1099 for my father in law’s SSA as I am preparing their taxes. He is deceased and only received three months worth of benefits in 2018 but I cannot seem to find a way to get this form. I received my mother in laws but not his– what do we do?

    • A.C.

Hi, Jacki. We’re sorry to hear about your loss. The benefit statement is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If it was not received at that address, the executor will need to go into the local Social Security office with proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. If you need more information, call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask a representative for assistance. We hope this helps.

Why isn’t 2018 tax form 1099 available on line? when is it coming? where does it appear? why isn’t this information in a banner at top of homepage during the tax season?

  6. Martin A.

I called 800-772-1213 BEFORE close of business on Monday, February 4, 2019 at 5:24PM California time yet the phone system prompt said your offices were CLOSED as it was “after working hours.” How can 5:24PM (or 8:24PM Eastern Time) be “after hours” when your website states a representative is available until 12 Midnight, Monday-Friday (or 9:00PM California Time)?

  7. Edward P.

As of this date, I have not received my Benefits statement/Form 1099 for 2018, while my wife has. I would like contact info to see about receiving a mailed hard copy. I DO NOT wish to set up an electronic account since that would preclude receiving paper copies by mail in the future.

    • A.C.

Hi, Edward. For your security, we do not have access to your private information in this venue. Since you do not wish to set up a personal my Social Security account, you can contact us at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. for assistance. You can also contact your local office. We hope this helps.

We need to get a copy of Aunt Bea’s 1099SSA statement. She is currently in assisted living and think she threw it away. Years back we helped her set up an account on line but her password information doesn’t work. I help her do her tax return. How can we get a copy? There was a 45 minute wait on the phone so I thought I would try this.
