man and woman on laptop It’s that time of year again. Preparing for tax season can seem overwhelming. Some forms and paperwork might be difficult to track down. If you misplaced your Benefits Statement or haven’t received it by the end of January, we’ve made it easy to go online to get a replacement with a personal my Social Security account.

An SSA-1099, also called a Benefit Statement, is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to the more than 60 million people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits received from Social Security in the previous year so people know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on their tax return.

For noncitizens who live outside of the United States and received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we’ll send form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

If you currently live in the United States and need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, we have a way for you to get a replacement quickly and easily. Go online and get a replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.

Every worker in the United States should create a personal my Social Security account. The secure and personalized features of my Social Security are valuable tools to help Americans plan for retirement.

    My mother passed away last Memorial Day and I can’t find her 2017 Social Security statement for tax purposes. She had filed for an extension. I wanted to try and get a copy online but according to the rules I can’t create and account for another person. How can I have a copy sent to me?
    Thank you

    • R.F.

      We’re sorry to hear about the loss of your mother, Todd. In certain cases, we may disclose SSA-1099 information from the record of a deceased person, only to a survivor of the deceased and only if we are able to establish the relationship of the survivor to the deceased based on SSA records.
      You will need to go into the local Social Security office with proper identification and supporting documents to make a request for a replacement SSA-1099.
      We hope this information helps.

    We need a replacement 1099 for my wife’s father who cannot go online. This is so we may file his 2017 IRS taxes. What to do?

    • V.V.

      If unable to request a replacement SSA-1099 online, he will need to either call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. or contact his local Social Security office.

      Because of privacy and security concerns, you will not be able to conduct Social Security business on behalf of someone else unless you are their representative payee. Having a power of attorney, being an authorized representative, or having a joint bank account does not authorize you to access information on their Social Security record. If your wife’s father does not have a representative payee and he is not capable of managing and directing his Social Security benefits, someone should consider applying to be his payee. To learn more about becoming a representative payee, you can read our publication, “A Guide for Representative Payees” or visit our Representative Payee webpage. You can also call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) to request an appointment.

    • V.V.

      Hi Marguerite, thank you for your question. First, realize you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important. However, if you must get a replacement card, you may be able to apply online. If you do not qualify to apply online, then you can apply by mail or visit your local office with required documentation. All documents must be either originals or certified copies. To learn more on how to get a replacement card and see if you can apply online, please visit our “Social Security Number and Card” web page.

      Click here to see how you can get a replacement Medicare card. If you can’t or prefer not to use the online service, call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. or contact your local Social Security office.

  10. Helen

    My Dad lost his Soc Security Card and needs a replacement. His license has expired can he still use it for identification

    • V.V.

      Hi Helen, we prefer a current (not expired) government issued document with a picture, as proof of identity for a replacement Social Security card. If your father does not have one or cannot get one within a reasonable amount of time, we may be able to use other documents such as:

      •Employee identification card;
      •School identification card;
      •Health insurance card; or
      •U.S. military identification card.

      All submitted documents must be original or certified copy, cannot be expired and must show the person’s name along with other identifying information (date of birth or age).

      Also, realize that your father may not need a replacement card. Individuals rarely need to show it. Knowing the Social Security number is what is important.

      To see if your father is eligible to apply for a replacement Social Security card online or to learn more on the process and what documents are needed to get a card, please visit our “Social Security Number and Card” web page.
