man and woman on laptop It’s that time of year again. Preparing for tax season can seem overwhelming. Some forms and paperwork might be difficult to track down. If you misplaced your Benefits Statement or haven’t received it by the end of January, we’ve made it easy to go online to get a replacement with a personal my Social Security account.

An SSA-1099, also called a Benefit Statement, is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to the more than 60 million people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits received from Social Security in the previous year so people know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on their tax return.

For noncitizens who live outside of the United States and received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we’ll send form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

If you currently live in the United States and need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, we have a way for you to get a replacement quickly and easily. Go online and get a replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.

Every worker in the United States should create a personal my Social Security account. The secure and personalized features of my Social Security are valuable tools to help Americans plan for retirement.

  1. Annelle B.

My Name is Annelle Barrow and I am acting on behalf of my mother Eileen Hartshorn. She lives in an elderly appt complex and has to re apply every year to live there. One of the forms she has to show is her social security benefit statement. She is 90 years old and has misplaced her 2018 SSA 1099 form. She does not have an email and I hesitate to sign her up o with a “my social security” account. I have attempted to contact the nearest SS office but am unable to get a response and she will need this form soon. How can I get a replacement SSA 1099 for 2018?

    • R.F.

Hello Annelle. Please keep in mind that you can only create a my Social Security account using your own personal information and for your own exclusive use. You cannot create or use an account on behalf of another person, even if you have that person’s written permission.
The other two ways that your mother can request a replacement form SSA-1099 is by:
      •Calling us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; or
•Contacting the local Social Security office.
Based on the information you’re providing, you should consider applying for a Representative Payee status for your mother. Please note that having a power of attorney, or having a joint bank account with the beneficiary, is not the same as being a payee. These arrangements do not give you legal authority to negotiate and manage payments for someone receiving Social Security or SSI payments.
You must apply for and be appointed as a representative payee by SSA. A face-to-face interview is required for you to apply. If approved to serve as your mother’s representative payee, it will make it easier for you in the future, to access her record and update her information.
To make an appointment, call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213 Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and speak with one of our agents. Generally, you will have a shorter wait time if you call later during the day or later in the week.
      We hope this information helps!

is my SSA 1099 the same as my W2?
I need to file my 2017 taxes and have just received my 1099 online, but I spoke with someone through
mysocialsecurity and she said I should get my W2. I see no options to secure that on line.

    • R.F.

Hello Amy. Generally, you get a W-2 form from your employer’s human resource or personnel office.
The Form SSA-1099 shows the amount of Social Security benefits paid during last year and the amount of any voluntary Federal tax withheld.
For further income tax questions, you will need to contact the IRS. Their toll-free number is 1-800-829-1040.
      We hope this helps!

  8. Maryann D.

What form is required to obtain a 2016 SSA 1099 for a deceased person when I am the Executor?

    • R.F.

Hello Maryann, you will need to go into the local field office with proof of death and proof of executorship, to request a replacement Form SSA-1099. In certain cases, we may disclose SSA-1099 information from the record of a deceased person, only to a survivor of the deceased and only if we are able to establish the relationship of the survivor to the deceased based on SSA records.
      We hope this information helps.
