  1. If I receive SSI and SSD disability, Am I eligible to file taxes? I’m curious if I can claim taxes? Please, let me know? I appreciate it. Thank you, Karla Linnell

    • Hi Karla, some people have to pay federal income taxes on their Social Security benefits. This usually happens only if you have other substantial income (such as wages, self-employment, interest, dividends and other taxable income that must be reported on your tax return) in addition to your benefits.
For additional tax questions, you will need to contact the IRS. Their toll-free number is 1-800-829-1040. We hope this helps.

    • If you have stated your income/resources correctly and are eligible for SSI you do not need to file taxes unless you can claim a refund/child credit etc. Contact the IRS for more details.

But I have forgotten my OLD EMAIL ADDRESS. Without it, I cannot reinstate and use my Social Security.

And, that concerns me because someone tried to hack one of my credit card accounts this past week. If you received a visit to my account today (02/01/2018) I would appreciate a contact verifying the activity.

  11. As mentioned before, mail is EXTREMELY slow going to Sihanoukville. Typically I receive the questionnaire in late February, so kindly cut me some slack since it WILL be rather late by the time you receive it.

Is it possible to fill out the form online? If a signature is required can you send me the form online or by email and I’ll see if I can print it out and perhaps fax it to you.

Cambodia can be rather primitive in terms of technology.

  45. My mother has Alzheimer’s and can’t sign her name. She needs a replacement 1099 because somehow one hasn’t shown up yet in her mail box. My father wants to get his taxes done and is wondering what has happened to it. He is not allowed to set up an account in her name so how do we get a replacement 1099 for her? He’s been on the phone for hours with no response. Please advise. Thanks

    • Hi Randi. We’re sorry to hear that your father had difficulty reaching someone by phone. We may have been experiencing higher than normal call volume.
Generally, when calling our toll free number (1-800-772-1213), you will have a shorter wait time if you call later during the day or later in the week. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Based on the information you provided, it sounds like your mother needs help managing her Social Security benefits. You or your father may want to consider applying to become your mother’s Representative Payee.
As a representative payee, you will be able to talk with us and have access to your mother’s records. In the future, it will make it easier for you to update her account information. A face-to-face interview is required when applying to become someone’s representative payee. You will be asked to provide supporting documentation about your mother’s condition and you will need to contact your local office.
We understand how inconvenient this may be, but we hope that you understand our role in protecting everyone’s personal information. Thanks!

  46. I just feel that it should be more computer friendly and I see that the Social Security Department is trying its best to accomodate. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for your response. Please send me an email, which would be appreciated.

  48. – Please make your information shorter and give access for feedback make an index of important articles.
    – I would like to know why do we pay tax on money that we already paid taxes.
    – Why people who works part time after retirement pays social security and medicare but does not get anything back.

    • Thank you for your comment, Bernardo. Current law requires everyone working in covered employment or self-employment, regardless of age or eligibility for benefits, to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes.
Generally, if you continue to work while receiving retirement benefits, your monthly benefit amount may increase. Each year, we review the records for all working Social Security recipients to see if additional earnings may increase monthly benefits.
For further income tax questions, you will need to contact the IRS. Their toll-free number is 1-800-829-1040.

  50. Hello. I receive SSI disability, and my minor daughter receives monthly benefits from this as well. I received my SSA-1099, last month. Should I receive a separate one for the benefits paid out on my daughters behalf??

Secondly, can I create an online account for my minor daughter, for the purposes of viewing monthly benefits, if I wanted to change the account, to her own savings account, etc.?? Or is there a way of accessing her information, from my SSA online account, since she is a minor dependent beneficiary of my disability benefits??

    Thank you!!

    • Hello Nicole, you can only create a my Social Security account using your own personal information and for your own exclusive use. Also, one of the requirements to create an account is that the individual creating an account has to be at least 18 years of age.
SSA’s role is to provide a benefit statement each year to each beneficiary who may be subject to Federal income taxes on his or her Social Security benefits. Please call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213 and ask one of our agents to assist you in regards to your daughter’s benefits and Form SSA-1099. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Or contact your local Social Security office. Thanks!

  53. My father died in 2017. Prior thereto, he received SS benefits. As his executor, I need to file his taxes but haven’t received a statement of the benefits paid to him. What should I do?

    • We’re sorry to hear about the loss of your father, Linda. In certain cases, we may disclose SSA-1099 information from the record of a deceased person, only to a survivor of the deceased and only if we are able to establish the relationship of the survivor to the deceased based on SSA records. You will need to go into the local Social Security office with proper identification and supporting documents to make a request for a replacement SSA-1099. We hope this information helps.

  54. Looked all over your site to find how to request replacement 2018 tax form – by MAIL. NOT online. Where is that info???

  56. I constantly run into problems using this site, and others related to it. Cannot do this or that…”system is not available at this time…” etc.

I’ve been paying into, and subsequently collecting SS benefits for years and today your system says it does not recognize me, my wife, and neither of us can get any further than SSA “does not recognize you…”.

Guess I’ll just call a local office and spend all day waiting for someone to answer the phone.

  57. I turned 66 in 2017 and began drawing my Social Security also. The letter from Social Security states that the income limit for me was 44,800.00. I worked full time part of 2017. If I am allowed to work and make up to $44,800. and I only make $29,869.00 and received $12056.00 in SS, Why am I being made to pay tax on half of my SS? It was my understanding from talking to the SS office, that as long as I did not go over the limit, I would not have to pay taxes on my SS. Thanks for your help.

    • Hello Mr. Edwards. Our “work provisions” allowed you to work and make $44,880 the year you attained your full retirement age without affecting your Social Security benefits. In the other hand, current law requires some people to pay federal income taxes on their Social Security benefits. This usually happens if you have other substantial income (such as wages, self-employment, interest, dividends and other taxable income that must be reported on your tax return) in addition to your Social Security benefits.
See our Benefits Planner: Income Taxes And Your Social Security Benefits for more information.
For further income tax questions, you will need to contact the IRS. Their toll-free number is 1-800-829-1040. Thanks!

  83. My mom completed a form to get a replacement SSA 1099 since February 2018 and now it is April 10, 2018 and still not received a replacement. I also had her complete it with a new address, and the form says it doesn’t update change of address. There is no change of address form and her password doesn’t work anymore and my mom doesn’t know how to use a computer.
It is a nightmare to get anything done through SSA.
All we need is a replacement 1099 for 2017 and it hasn’t been sent to her. I was told to go down to the local office and have her address updated. I went down there and was told that she would have to physically come in. My mom is over 90 years old and physically can’t walk as she is now disabled and living in assisted living. I’ve spent at least an hour and half on the phone on hold while nothing can be done as said I should go down to the local office. I did that but the supervisor there said I should wait to receive it by mail, I tried to explain that she moved and obviously the old address won’t accept any of her mail as she is no longer there. I can’t believe now stupid that agency is and of course the IRS isn’t going to wait even with an extension filed by me on her behalf. I am so upset that a change of address couldn’t be done. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told that one would call back. I called at 12 noon and got off the phone at 1:10 pm and haven’t received any call back or a new password to reset so I can retrieve her 1099 on line.
I am going to file the extension with the IRS, and pay the estimated taxes for my mom. I had a bad feeling that this department is that bad and can’t get anything done properly for a senior. I just want to make sure we get this 1099 as required by the IRS, in order to file her income tax for 2017. It doesn’t look like it can be done on time. Eight weeks of waiting since February 2018 is a very long time to wait and I’m sure they sent it to the old address, although there was a updated address on the form which is probably the wrong form. It was the one that was on their website, to request it.
I left messages before and never received an obvious solution. I am so disappointed and upset with them, SSA is such an non responsible government agency. They are messing with seniors tax information and don’t care either. No return call either today.

  84. I have spent an hour wading thru this disaster w/ NO RESULTS!!!!!!

  88. You make the statement “The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).”, but you don’t explain why, and where that means there is another form that applies, or is SSI payments are exempt from taxes? Not helpful to make statements that are not explanied!

    • Hello David. Supplemental security income (SSI) payments are NOT taxable, and thus do not need to be reported on your tax return. For further income tax questions, you will need to contact the IRS. Their toll-free number is 1-800-829-1040. Thanks!
