customer-service

Social Security has been in the customer service business for more than 81 years, and with Customer Service Week, October 3-7, at hand, it is an exciting time to share the importance of this long-standing tradition.

“My experience with SSA has always been positive.”–Edward M.

This week focuses on commitment to excellence in service. Many of you rely on us for our programs and services. While much of the assistance we give is during the most critical times in your life, it is our belief that with every interaction with us you deserve professional, courteous, and compassionate service.

Times have progressed from 81 years ago, when most customer-to-employee interactions were in person. Today, part of your changing needs is the convenience of quick and secure online service options to conduct your Social Security business. Whether you are home or on the go, you can visit www.socialsecurity.gov to use our many online services.  And we are committed to customer choice, so you can always come see us in the office or call us on our 800 number.

I am trustee for my friend and I would like to report the death of Bettye W Little on Jan 10 2019. How can I get this done.

    • V.V.

Duncan, we are very sorry for your loss. Typically, the funeral director notifies us of an individual’s passing by contacting the local Social Security office. To verify this information was reported, you can call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. or you can contact your local Social Security office directly. Thanks.

I am trying to change the address on my mom’s Medicare card. When I call 800-772-1213, they say that it will be an hour wait, so I decided to try to change it on line, but there doesn’t seems to have a function to make that change. If you could contact me at 206-660-8817 or email at deuels27@msn.com, I would appreciate it! Thank you! Stacy Deuel on behalf of my mom, Sonia Naus.

    • V.V.

Hi Stacy. If your mother gets Social Security benefits (retirement, survivors, or disability) or is enrolled in Medicare, she can create a my Social Security account to change her address online.

If she gets SSI, does not have a U.S. mailing address, or is unable to change her address online, she can:
      •Call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; or
•Contact her local Social Security office.

Because of privacy and security concerns, you will not be able to conduct Social Security business on behalf of your mother unless you are her representative payee. Having a power of attorney, being an authorized representative, or having a joint bank account with your mother does not authorize you to access information on her Social Security record. If your mother does not have a representative payee and she is not capable of managing and directing her Social Security benefits, someone should consider applying to be her payee. To learn more about becoming a representative payee, you can read our publication, “A Guide for Representative Payees” or visit our Representative Payee web page. You can also call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) to request an appointment.

  6. Steven F.

How can I find out how many Social Security credits I have towards retirement benefits? I know I need 40 and my last statement was in 2005. I had 36 at that time. I also know that by drawing a pension my benefits will be affected. Please advise.
    Thank you so much.

    • V.V.

Hi Steven: Your Social Security Statement will tell you how many credits you have if you’re not insured. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for details on how to obtain your Statement.

what does it mean when the word “VOID” is marked on some SS cards? can someone still get a job? join the military? just need some clarification thanks!

  9. Michael K.

    Dear Social Security,
On March 10, 1016, I paid $487.20 and on June 8, 2016, I paid $365.40 both via my US Bank Visa Card for Parts A & B of my Medicare. However, when payment was auto-deposited to my checking account, those same amounts were deducted from their respectable deposit. Consequently, I paid the Medicare premiums twice. I have brought this error to the attention of my local office a few times and each time they assure me the correction will be paid. I also endeavored several times to locate and connect with the correct link on your web site to notify of this discrepancy; and, yours appears to be the most relevant. I did not feel safe displaying my SSN, but my contact information is:
    Michael K. Skelton
    Ohio 43016-8009
    2625
e-mail: mks8866@gmail.com (best way to contact me)
If further information is required, please let me know and I look forward to your response.
    Thank you,
    Michael Skelton
