woman on laptopIn December, Social Security will launch a new service for my Social Security account holders where the public can check on the status of an application for benefits or an appeal filed with us.

The service will provide detailed information about retirement, disability, survivors, Medicare, and Supplemental Security Income claims and appeals filed either online on our website or with a Social Security employee.

The ability to check your application status will be available online to everyone who has or opens a secure personal my Social Security account. You can open an account on our website.

The service will provide important information about your claim or appeal, including, as appropriate:

  • Date of filing.
  • Current claim location.
  • Scheduled hearing date and time.
  • Incomplete applications.
  • Servicing office location.
  • Claim or appeal decision.

If you are unable to open a personal my Social Security account, you can still call 1-800-772-1213 to check your claim status by using our automated system using the confirmation number you received when you filed your claim.

Providing our customers with more claim status information helps us meet our goal of delivering innovative, quality services to you and helping secure today and tomorrow.

I applied for my social security on October 9, 2018, with the help of my sister, Penney Simms. Have not be able to get any information despite alot of phone calls and visit to the office in Fredericksburg, VA., to turn in a paper that was required. I am not working and am staying with my elderly mother as her caretaker. Please let me know my status, since I cannot get an answer from anyone on the phone. I was told today(1/7/19) day that I need a password number which I don’t have. I am experiencing some health issues so I would really appreciate any help you can give me. My sister has been trying to help but I realize that you can’t give her my information, but I do give permission for her if you can let her know what needs to be done. I am giving you her email address as mine doesn’t seem to be working because when I try to signin to my account it is not being accepted. I really need to get this situation fixed as I need to have my money to help my mother and myself. Thank you

  10. Gerhardt B.

I applied for a Social Security Number and Card on November 19, 2018. I would like to know how long it takes to receive it.

    • Vonda V.

Gerhardt, we apologize for the inconvenience. For security reasons, we do not have access to information about your Social Security card application in this venue. Typically, after we receive the application and verify the documents, you can expect to receive the card in the mail within 10 – 14 business days. Unfortunately, if you have not received the card by then, you need to go back into the office where you filed your application. When you go, take the documents you originally presented as evidence.
