2018 is almost here! It’ll be a New Year. There’s no better time to tell you about the features we have in my Social Security. They not only save you time, but also put you in control of your retirement future.
There are a growing number of states (and the District of Columbia) where, if you’re a resident, you can request a replacement Social Security card online. Our new online version of the Application for a Replacement Social Security Card can make getting a replacement easy and stress free. It allows people to apply for a replacement card through my Social Security without traveling to a field office or card center, as long as you’re not requesting a name change or any other change to your card. We are working to add this capability to every state.
Your personal my Social Security account is secure and gives you ready access to your earnings records, Social Security benefit estimates, and printable Social Security Statement. Those who already receive benefits can view their payment history, current status, and manage their benefits.
Social Security has also made replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement (known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S) shows the amount of benefits you received the previous year and is needed for filing taxes. Now you have the ability to download it using our online services. There’s no need to visit a field office. A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is available after February 1 for the previous tax year.
If you don’t have a my Social Security account, creating a secure account is very easy to do and usually takes less than 15 minutes.
Putting you in control of your future is a key part of securing today and tomorrow. With my Social Security, we give you the power to steer your future in the direction you deserve.

Your Medicare payment went up.
I get less than last year ? Thanks
My comment concerns your use of ‘cost-of-living’ increases in benefits. We don’t see this increase as you paper shuffle any increase to where it doesn’t come though. In checking my monthly check, I find no increase in the last four years even though there has been cost of living increases. These increases do nothing for my ability to cope with my increasing responsibilities for food, clothing and shelter. When can we expect a responsible handling of Social Security?
Depends of what you mean by “responsible.” Do you mean as they’ve been doing for over 60+ years, efficiently & inexpensively (only 1% of all SS $ goes toward administration as opposed to private corporations who spend up to 40% on “administrative costs,” or do you mean eliminate the program, as Trump & Congress have in the works? (Read the proposed bill yourself at congress.gov) How sad…what will you all criticize when Social Security & Medicare are gone for good next year?
If you took your SS before full retirement age your NOT ENTILDED TO THE COST OF LIVING INCREASE
Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) increases apply to all Social Security and SSI beneficiaries. You can find more details about the new COLA at http://www.socialsecurity.gov/cola. Thanks!

I would like to look at my Medicare account & see if and when I owe money again. I do not want to be in arrears or be cancelled as a penalty. I have no clue what my financial status is and I cannot seem to find it online. Very very complicated so far and my occupation was business manager so I am not lacking financial knowledge. The government is never user friendly.
Please let me have access to your website. I am an American living overseas. You do not allow foreign addresses. Thanks.
We are sorry for the inconvenience, Patricia. Although you need a U.S. address to register for a my Social Security account, you do not need a U.S. address to access our website or file online for benefits.
The “my Social Security” authentication system requires address verification as one of the essential criteria for issuing an account. People with APO/FPO/DPO addresses can create an account overseas, but our system does not support registration and account creation for users with a foreign address yet.

We pay taxes into social security an then we pay taxes once we receive security????
That’s our government for you. They get you coming and going. So unfair. While the illegals get all these benefits and don’t pay into the system. Not fair at all.
Not true at all, either. “Illegals” do NOT collect Social Security or other government social services. Sheeple…
I do have a question, which came up in discussion, my wife died 12 years ago…Darlene C. Platt…*** – ** – *** and something was said about getting money from working …. Is this a fact ?
It’s called Survivors Benefits. If you were married for more than 10 years. If she worked and paid Social Security taxes while working, you might qualify to receive benefits from her earnings benefits. It also depends on how many years she worked to build up enough credits.
The same applies if you were divorced, as long as you were married more than 10 years.
SocialSecurity.Gov has more information about this.
This is in response to a comment about survivor’s benefits being paid to a former spouse. In other words because I worked for 46 years, and I die, my ex-husband whom I was married to for 11 years can claim my survivor’s benefits? I want to live forever!
That was my first husband I was referring to. I remarried and am now collecting his survivor’s benefits but next year I will collect mine because I was told mine will have past his and will be more money.
Maybe your first husband won’t find out about survivors benefits. A lot of people don’t know. You have to apply for it. It’s not automatic when you file for Social Security.
Survivors or Living ex-spouses.
Surviving spouses and ex-spouses can receive benefits as early as 60 years old.
Reduced benefits at age 60. You cannot marry again until after age 60, either.
“Survivors Planner: If You Are The Worker’s Widow Or Widower“
If you are the widow or widower of a person who worked long enough under Social Security, you can receive reduced benefits as early as age 60 (age 50 if disabled).
Happy New year good luck and peace with GOD.2018 is a lucky number 1820.
My wife and I are living in a Rent Complex for seniors with low income, in general people that came to United States of America through the Refugee Program of the U.S. State Department, and others American people with this category. The couple will receive $11.00 per capita. The Rent Complex increase in $6.00 Monthly, accord the Housing Urbanization Development (H.U.D), and the State of Arizona take off $4.00 of the Food Stamp Program.
Which it is the real increase in order to the be accord with the actually standard of life?
I believe that when the Social Security Administration increase the income of people with very low income, the H.U.D. must be change the old rules about it. In the other side the Security Economic Department of the States, can’t reduce the Supplemental Nutrition Administration Program ( SNAP ) in order to the quality of life in this great American nation.
Thanks.
Happy New Year!
God bless America!
It will be interesting to see how much Congress guts Social Security and Medicare. I wonder why Congress has never but a dime back into Social Secirity, from all of the money they took out and never paid back, going back decades. Yet Congressmen Ryan thinks entitlements should be cut. Since when is it an entitlement, when Americans have put money into this accoiunt while working, as well as employers. When I was working I had increases in my taxes to cover increases to Social Security, taken right out of my pay check. So now Congress wants to destroy it, and take more money out of it. Why haven’t they ever put money back into it that they stoled from it. Amounting to Trillion of dollars. Now we have to pay Taxes on it and our Pensions. When is Congress going to learn to stay within their means? I guess Never, would be the answer. DNC or GOP no difference their both a bunch of crooks!
I’M CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF USING MY SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER ONLINE.
I have an account but I have not been able to get in it for over 7 months. it stopped taking my password.

If I’m not mistaken, You have to create a new password after a certain period of time. I believe it’s for security reasons. Try to set up a new password. See if that works.

my wife and i were divorced approx 22 years ago she is getting a small monthly ss check. she has not remarried
and is 80 plus. can she collect on my ss.
If you were married for more than 10 years. It depends on how much you paid in Social Security taxes and credits earned. She probably can’t collect both, from her SS and your SS. Most likely which ever is more money. It’s best to talk to a Social Security representative to be sure.
Thank you for your question, Alex. Generally, when individuals apply for Social Security benefits -during the initial interview- we explore for other possible eligibility that can pay them a higher benefit amount. Meaning, that we would’ve checked to see if your ex-wife was eligible for a higher benefit as a divorced spouse.
To make sure, and to see if she is eligible for a higher benefit than what she is getting now, she should call us at 1-800-772-1213. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Thanks.
Thank sir,for report, my benefits retirement may start on January 2018, and life insurance too! For $25.00 mounthly!
A friend said that she can apply for her ex-husband’s social security even though she has been divorced. How can that be possible?
I believe she had to be married for more than ten years, and the divorced spouse had to work and pay enough Social Security taxes to earn enough credits. She will be able to receive benefits as early as age 62, but benefits will be reduced.
SocialSecurity.Gov has more information on this.
The same applies to deceased spouses and ex-spouses. It’s called Survivors Benefits. Although the surviving spouse can receive reduced benefits at age 60.
The surviving spouse can not marry again until after age 60.
FYI, I don’t work for the Social Security Administration. But have been doing my own research on SocialSecurity.Gov.
My ex-husband passed away almost 23 years ago. We were married for almost 12 years. I have not remarried. I’m not yet eligible for his benefits, but wanted to know what was required. As a Divorced Surviving Widow, I can apply for his benefits about 3 months before I turn 60 years old. Then later on I can switch to my own if the benefit is more money.
Hi Angela! If you are divorced, but your marriage lasted 10 years or longer, you can receive benefits on your ex-spouse’s record (even if they have remarried) if:
•You are unmarried;
•You are age 62 or older;
•Your ex-spouse is entitled to Social Security retirement or disability benefits; and
•The benefit you are entitled to receive based on your own work is less than the benefit you would receive based on your ex-spouse’s work.
See our Retirement Planner: If You Are Divorced for more.
Thanks for the info! It helped me a lot! http://webesser.com
When retirees overseas will be allow to have MY SOCIAL SECURITY account? If pension can be deposited to overseas accounts then what is the reason not to allow accounts for overseas residents. This matters appears to be contradictory and discriminatory.

Hello,
I am interest in an announcement on radio today that you can get your SS in a debit card.
Please advise. Thank you.
Mary Philadelphia, PA
Hi Mary, the Direct Express card is a debit card you can use to access your benefits. Call 1-800-333-1795 for more information. Also, see “How Do I Sign Up to Receive an Electronic Payment?“. We hope this helps!
How can I create an account and manage my account.
Great! Please go to: Services for people currently receiving benefits and create your personal my Social Security account. Thanks!
Impossible. I’ve been unable to create an account since 2013. When you announced this “convenient feature.” It’s ridiculous. My Google-Fu has revealed people on disability or people already receiving benefits have had an 85% FAILURE RATE for creating an account. This needs to change. Equifax is KNOWN to have incorrect info on people. You, the Social Security Administration, have MORE THAN ENOUGH INFORMATION on the people who are already receiving benefits and more accurate than what Equifax will ever have.
I need , I would like to replace my ss card numbers , since i think a prostitud may have those numbers illegally
Hi Amaury. If you think someone is using your Social Security number, there are several actions you can take. Visit our Frequently Asked Questions web page for information on this topic. We hope this information helps!
That is certainly great news but why don’t you also change how you handle passwords? I live 100 miles from any Social Security office and when I made a mistake trying to log in with the incorrect password I now have to go to the office in Greeley, CO to request it to be unlocked? NOT one Credit Card that I use online requests this from a person. If your security is so wonderful then why can this not be handled on line also???
I have been blocked from accessing my social security account.
Hello Michael. Please call 1-800-772-1213 for assistance. After you hear “Briefly tell me why you are calling,” say “Help Desk” for help with a my Social Security account. Sometimes, it might be best to visit your local Social Security office for further assistance. Thanks!
Received a 2% cost of living and took that 2% raise to pay Medicare Payment ended getting zero raise. That wasn’t fair when you are on a fix income.
I am 87 yrs old. I started drawing Social Security at 62 yrs old. I have gotten Social Security for 25 years now. I work a full-time 40-hour-week as a cashier. There is still a deduction from my paycheck for Social Security. If I had that amount of money that has been deducted for 25 years which has gone to Social Security, it could help me pay the hospital/doctor bills for my wife’s brain injury from a head concussion and the heart attack (12/13/2017) which could help me tremendously. So my question is this: Why do these deductions continue after I have passed the age of 65, out of my paycheck for Social Security? … If those deductions out of my paycheck since 1992, when I was 62, deducted for 25 years mean anything (what are “credits” for?), I would like to think that increases in my monthly SS would be nice for me (87) and my completely DISABLED wife who will be 85 this January 2018, IF SHE MAKES IT..
I’m pretty upset, over-worked and tired. I take care of my wife and it is very difficult to look forward to just SS for income and paying bills to keep my wife alive. … I went to the local SS office in Keene, NH and talked to a young girl, behind bullet-proof glass, and when I asked “What can SS do for me?” she said “Nothing.”
I am so sorry you and your wife still struggle at this age. I had to deplete my retirement savings to try to take care of my mother and started trying to save over again at 55. Had to sell my home and won’t own anything until 67. We don’t live that long in my family and my generation appears to be the first in US history to live shorter lives that our parents. Widowed at 29 with two small kids and born in 1960. I fear that I won’t have any retirement years and that will be if I am lucky enough to remain employed. I truly hope we can get things better in time for things to be better for you and your wife. There is no way they should still be taking SSI/SSDI deductions from your checks at your age and still capping contributions at $118,500.00 annual income. That has to be changed. Imagine that. Making millions or billions and still only paying on up to $118,500.00 annually, if paying anything at all. The tax evading super wealthy and corporations need to step up here.

Happy New Year!
Do I need a specific (or special) reason to request a new Social Security card? I still have mine, but it looks a bit old. Are the new cards laminated?
Hello. The new cards are not laminated. Lamination prevents detection of many security features. However, you may cover the card with plastic or other removable material if it does not damage the card. Also, please realize you may not need a new card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important. However, if you must get a replacement card, you can complete this process online with your my Social Security account. Thanks!
I can’t set up an account since my credit is frozen and has been for about 20 years. I won’t unfreeze just for this, need another way to get set up. I plan to apply for benefits this summer.
Why is it taking you idiots 6 months to process ODAR decision letters? Are you hiring illiterate people or something who don’t understand the English language?
Hi James. The length of time it takes to begin receiving payments after receiving a favorable decision in a hearing varies. Approved claims are randomly selected for a quality assurance review of the decision. We care about our customers and are working as fast as we can. For security reasons, we do not have access to information about your account in this venue.
Please continue working with your local office, and if necessary, ask to speak with the manager to see how we can help to expedite the process of your claim. Thanks.
Thanks!
Dear Jim
It was very nice to find a place to write you and hopefully you or someone responsible will read it
I am retired 71 years old that just went through separation and now I am alone with $742.00 monthly Social security income and $753.00 monthly rent. Plus, utilities and living expenses, I hear all about the cuts and the benefits provided for many different sectors but I don’t see anyone talking about people in retirement that suffering or homeless and we are still taxing people in retirement. My $18.00 per month phone has more than $10.00 government services and tax fees.
When a person retire means that has no other income and at that point he shall not be subject to any tax at all and must have income base to the poverty level in his area and need to be slightly above that.
I have never claim any federal state or city benefits until now, I am healthy and take no medication or charge anything to my Medicare and I still pay $125 per month for a service I don’t use but I cannot pay my rent, utilities and living expenses.
Now I am asking you what are you going to do for all this needy people that has paid for SS all their life and now they have to become beggers in order to survive because for me all those benefits including food stamps will not be needed if I was slightly above the poverty level of my area and I was going to be a proud surviving individual and no one was going to abuse any services
I will be looking forward in receiving your answer and also see legislators in Federal and State level taking fast actions to correct this ongoing harassment to the people of their kind.
I thank you in advance, I remain
Sincerely yours,

14 billion dollars is spent every year for SSA personnel. All while people are dying in the streets waiting to find out if they are approved for the disability insurance they paid into for years and years.
Once you finally see a judge which takes years you have to wait another 6 months to find out if you were approved or not.
Where is this 14 billion dollars being spent??? Are you hiring people who aren’t proficient. As a taxpayer I demand answers.
There need to be time limits set up for the adjucation process!

Hello, I have been trying to get into My Social Security account and it tells me to receive a security code. In order to receive the code I need to leave your site and retrieve it from my email. When I go back and sign in again and go through the same process it does not get me to the ID # page, it seems I have to hit email code again and then it gets me to next page and when I put in the code your gave me it does not accept because I had to hit the button for an email code, which cancelled out the one you gave me. What am I doing wrong?
Hello Blanche. If you are having difficulties with your personal my Social Security account, please call 1-800-772-1213 for assistance. After you hear “Briefly tell me why you are calling,” say “Help Desk” for help with a my Social Security account. Thanks!

Thank you. My house is gone up and I need a Pay raise
Not easy. I was locked out after 3 tries to establish a My Social Security account. But no particular reason or error information to correct was indicated. Might it be that the phone number you have on file which has been disconnected for 3 years is the cause? Perhaps if that criteria was indicated as a reason my attempt to create an account could have been easily corrected. I inputed the 8 digit numbers of 2 of my credit cards; both master cards and neither of them were accepted. However I have multiple Visa & master Cards credit cards. How am I supposed to know which one of many would be accepted? This is very frustrating. Very!
Hi Catherine, you are only required to provide the last eight digits of your credit card number when you select the extra security option. This information is used for further verification.
Please call 1-800-772-1213 for assistance. After you hear “Briefly tell me why you are calling,” say “Help Desk” for help with a my Social Security account. Also, you can visit your local Social Security office directly and explain your situation. Thanks!

See “Schedule of Social Security Payments“.
there is no link that actually allows you to order a replacement card online
Today I received my first SSA-1099 in the mail. I am curious to know why the SSA doesn’t offer me the option of choosing to receive this document online, especially since you make them available online at the end of January. Please take a cue from the credit card companies, which offer their customers the option to receive statements online rather than by mail. Paper documents by mail aren’t great for security reasons (our social security numbers are printed on the 1099s), and I’m sure a lot of money could be saved by the SSA if it doesn’t have to print and mail millions of these forms. Those who opt out of receiving paper could be sent an email notifying them when their 1099s are available online. Thank you.
Thanks for your comment! We value your thoughts and will use your suggestions to explore how we can further improve the services we offer.
Your feedback is greatly appreciated!

Good Morning~
My name is Bonnie Weston. I have an existing Social Security Account and tried to sign in this morning. Having forgotten my username and password, I went through the steps to receive a new one in the mail.
Is there anyway that I could reset the password online? I’m away from home at the moment, and I’m eager to view my statement.
Thank you,
Bonnie

My check supposed to be deposited today and I have not received it I don’t know if it’s cuz of the holiday I get SSI and I I I want to know when will it be deposit onto my card
Hello Temeka, SSI payments are due on the 1st of the month. If your regularly scheduled payment date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal public holiday, benefits will be paid the business day before your due date. See Schedule of Social Security Payments for more information. Thanks!
How do I know when my Social Security check will be “sent” to the bank?
Hi, Barbara. SSA delivers benefit-payments on four days throughout the month: on the 3rd of the month and on the second, third and fourth Wednesdays of the month.
Beneficiaries entitled to benefits prior to May 1997 continue to receive their payments on the 3rd of the month. Beneficiaries who filed claims on or after May 1, 1997, are assigned one of the three new payment dates (second, third or fourth Wednesdays of the month) based on their day of birth. Please view the Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments for 2018 for more information. Thanks!
My husband is retired we have had a 15 yr old granddaughter live with us for 10yrs can we now collect SSI on her?
Hello Katherine. An adopted or dependent grandchild may qualify for Social Security benefits if certain conditions are met. Generally, when a grandparent gets Social Security retirement benefits or disability benefits, his or her adopted or dependent grandchild also may get benefits. See “Benefits For Grandchildren” for more information. We hope this helps.
My wife expired 5th of October. Can I have survivor benefit from her social security? I do get social security, can I have both?
Sam, we are very sorry for your loss. If you already receive benefits as a spouse, under her record, your benefit will automatically convert to widower’s benefits after we receive the report of death. Typically, the funeral director notifies us of an individual’s passing by contacting the local Social Security office.
If you are receiving retirement benefits on your own record, you can only apply for benefits as a widower if your retirement benefit amount is less than the benefits you would receive as a survivor.
You cannot report a death or apply for survivors benefits online. If you need to report a death or apply for benefits, call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). You can speak to a Social Security representative between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. You can also visit your local Social Security office. An appointment is not required, but if you call ahead and schedule one, it may reduce the time you spend waiting to speak to someone. Thanks.

When my check on the 3 of January will come?
how do I request to have tax taken out from my monthly retirement check?
Thank you for your question, John. You’ll need to complete Form W-4V from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). You can download the form or call the IRS toll-free at 1-800-829-3676 and ask for Form W-4V. When you complete the form, you can choose to have 7, 10, 12, or 22 percent of your monthly benefit withheld for taxes. How can I have fed withholding taken out of my Social Security amount
Thanks for your question, Ken. To start withholding, you’ll need a Form W-4V from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). You can download the form or call the IRS toll-free at 1-800-829-3676 and ask for Form W-4V. Sign the form and return it to your local Social Security office by mail or in person.
Is it true that my wife, who receives less social security than I do, can apply to receive the same amount as I do?
Thanks for your question, Pete. Your wife may be eligible for a spouse’s benefit on your record but it’s equal to one-half on your full retirement amount and she would only be eligible for half if she waited until her full retirement age to file. If she began receiving a spouse’s benefit at age 62, or at any point prior to her full retirement age, her benefits are reduced.
See our Retirement Planner: Benefits For Your Spouse for more information. Also, to compute the effect on your benefit amount if you file for early retirement as well as to compute the effect on your spouse’s benefits if you file for early retirement, check out our Early or Late Retirement Calculator and our Benefits for Spouses Calculator.
I have not received my SSI check for the months of January and February 2019.
I would like to know the reason.
Hi, Allen. For your security, we do not have access to private information in this venue. If you do not receive your payment on the scheduled pay date, please contact your bank or financial institution first. They may be able to determine why your direct deposit failed. If you still need to report a late, missing, or stolen Social Security payment, visit our Frequently Asked Questions. We hope this is resolved soon.
I need to take 20% out of my SS for Federal Taxes but can’t find anything that addresses this adequately. Help
Hi, Charlene. In order to have taxes withheld from your Social Security benefit, you must start by printing, completing and submitting an IRS Voluntary Withholding Request Form (Form W-4V). On this form, you can choose to have 7, 10, 12, or 22 percent of your monthly benefit withheld. The Form W-4V (to withhold federal taxes from your Social Security benefits) can be returned to your local Social Security office by mail or in person. See our Benefits Planner: Withholding Income Tax From Your Social Security Benefits web page for more information. We hope this helps.
