blowing palm trees at the beach Hurricane season is here. Time to stock up on candles, flashlights, and bottled water, for the possibility of inclement weather. It’s good to be prepared for possible misfortune, and to know that you’re covered in case misfortune or disability occurs. Life can be unpredictable and tragedy can strike at any moment.

Social Security has your entire family in mind when it comes to coverage and benefits. We’re here to help secure today and tomorrow — during every stage of life.

Most people think of retirement benefits when they think about Social Security, and that certainly is a big part of what we do. In fact, most of the benefits we pay go to retirees and their families — about 41 million people.

If you work and pay Social Security taxes during your lifetime, you can look forward to a strong foundation of income from Social Security during your retirement. You can build upon that foundation with pensions, savings, and other income.

However, Social Security is more than retirement.

If you become disabled before you retire, and you can’t work to support your family, Social Security has you covered with disability benefits. If you have a disability that prevents you from working and is expected to last a year or longer, or result in death, you should apply for disability benefits.

Your work and taxes earn benefits for not only you, but your entire family, too. Family benefits can include retirement, disability and, in the event of your death, survivors benefits. This coverage includes everyone in your family who depends on you for support. This includes your minor children who are under age 18, or age 19 if still in secondary school, as well as your spouse. It also can include older children who have severe disabilities that began before age 22. Statistics show that 1-in-4 of year-olds becomes disabled before reaching retirement age. Social Security disability benefits provide a much-needed financial support to people when they need it most.

Whether through survivors, disability, or retirement benefits, Social Security is here to help you and your entire family when the need arises. We’re with you through life’s journey.

Be ready. Learn about the Social Security disability benefits to which you may be entitled by reading our online publication, Understanding the Benefits.

Will Social security checks come early because of hurricane Irma

No matter where you live in FL, you learn to store up on cannes goods and bottled water a little at a time. It also pays to keep your car filled when it goes down to 3/4 of a tank. If a hurricane isn’t coming our way now, eventually it will be! I haven’t done it, but we should have important papers and medication in waterproof bags. Some of the previous posters are right, though; it is difficult enough to make ends meet, much less have enough stock up. With Irma on her way, I am doing that and packing a little bag of clothes. Thank you for this forum. I always learn something when I read it.

So, the real question is……Why do so many middle class Americans all need financial assistance when a Hurricane presents itself in your area?

The middle class struggles with our economy, and this is an extra expense and the funds are not there.

    Why is this?????

Maybe because they don’t buy flood insurance, they’d rather have the government bail them out.

Not entirely true: TRS penalizes retirees (in my case 1/2 of my earned SS benefits) are penalized for work performed for non-SS paying companies even though they were qualified for SS benefits previous to that work. This “WINDFALL” needs changed so retirement would be easier for those affected. Thanks for looking into this law.

People have been bitching about the WEP for decades. Your combined pension and SS is still higher than those who only get SS. Here’s a clue, no one is looking into this law nor are they ever planning to. Anyone who says they are, are scamming you to send them money.

THANK YOU JEFFREY for your working with the homeless vets needing extra care for PTSD of having gone to war.

I’m glad there are folks like you out there trying to ease their burdens to help giving them back quality of life again.

There are many orgs in FLORIDA giving 100% of donations to the victims.

I think it’s Tuesday night when a tv telephone fundraiser will be happening organized by OPRAH, BLAKE SHELTON, BEYONCE, & i’ve forgotten 4th name advertised.
